I always thought KDE was kind of dumb. ex: why have a "desktop folder"? on the desktop. the desktop itself should be the desktop folder (like it is in gnome or windows or any other window manager where things make sense)

@worldofkris I find a use for it when I need to view folders on a remote server - I set it up and whenever I boot to the system it logs to the server and I can see all the files I need. But if you don't need it, don't use it, I have nothing agains Windows - to each their own :)

That's not always true. For example, imagine you work as a web developer, who loves the linux environment and writing applications using that os, but has to create some widgets in Flash. Adobe doesn't support Flash development on Linux so you have to use windows from time to time. Virtualbox + fullscreen works great on such occasions.

@nitai86 You have a valid point although i wasnt talking about people who have a legitimate use for running windows in Virtualbox. I was referring to people who install Linux yet are too lazy to learn it so they install windows in a VM and run that inside Linux. i have seen this done many times. People like to say they run Linux , but they havent a clue how to operate it, and have no desire to learn.

I like Gnome (2.30) because it responds like I want to do what I want.

KDE 4 is too cluttered by stupid stuff that serves no purpose like rotating desktop widgets. Its GUI is like a minefield, click a few pixels off and boom! something weird happens.

Talk about a learning curve! Found a new menu? Guess which one of these items is not a shiny useless transformation effect. Did you forget what do the dozen buttons in that widget do? Hint: they probably spawn more widgets.

Without no doubt is the best desktop. Powerfully, visually nice, stable. Gnome is obsoleted now. Try to import some pictures with fspot in gnome, and after that try the same with digikam in kde.

I really disliked KDE but now i switched to it since there isn't a single Desktop more configurable. its better than Win7 and Gnome (which is digging their own grave with "Shell" btw) together and like 99% of all bugs r ironed out.Great Job folks.

KDE 4 is still not stable on Linux! In fact, after the excellent KDE 3 series, it has proven a great disappointment to the Linux community. Even Linux inventor Linus Torvalds has abandoned it.

Trouble is the KDE devs have wasted too much effort on stupid widgets and insufficient time making it stable. Porting it to Windows when the Linux version is still not ready for a production environment seems utterly daft - unless the KDE team think that Windows users won't mind if it's a bit flaky? LOL.

Graphics heavy memory use, bloated ms office, shadowcopy service, pnp and unnecessary services. I forgot about vulnerabilities to remote code execution and aero which sucks.

Oh linux, with your sleek use of memory, tons of free software including DVD and CD Authoring with option for Nero, and sexy user interface. Did I mention, anti-virus really isn't necessary. Oh and don't forget Nvidia graphics card with proprietary support.

Linux seems to be the way to go, and works w/ Iphone.

Why use this? Well.. sometimes, you, as linux fan, are forced to use Windows. Either because of your job, because of an app that doesn't work with linux, or games. Of course, you DONT wanna use the Windows shell. So, Make life a little bit easier and get KDE so you can pretend ur using Linux with a crappy cpu and the pain is bearable.

KDE 4.2 aplications compiled for windows. KDE's desktop is also running like a separate aplication, so it's easy to compile it and run.

It's still Luna/Aero, KDE programs don't replace them

i dont want to say anything against kde and i respect the work, those guys did, but i believe one big problem of kde is, that they do some things just because they are possible to do ... but thats not a specific problem of kde but a problem that are driven by people thinking like programmers.

especially desktop environments should set the focus on creating applications out of the user-perspective..

but kde 4 is done und gave us some great new frameworks, from which we will profit in the future

Just the drawing backend is in the kernel. KDE uses the QT framework for drawing and QT is the point here, cause it can talk to X11 on linux and the windows drawing subsystem without the kde application worrying about it. So that kinda rocks and is the point of this demo. Maybe in the bright future we could ditch the architecturally flawed X11 server on linux and join the 90s too :\ Im pretty sure kde works better on windows.
