For the drive LEDs, something to taper the lighting and extinguishing would be nice, so it isn't so abrupt.
I love the load indicator. Did you just hook the 8 LEDs to the data lines? (I've pondered a number of novel uses for the parallel port as an annunciator array.)
Rigging a little whistle to be triggered by the system beep call would be amusing.

That's actually correct, a steam locomotive uses the exhaust steam that goes through the stack from the cylinders to create a draft, drawing more air through the fire. The harder the engine works the stronger the draft and the hotter the fire.
can you tell me what you used for LEDs? I'm steampunking my uilleann pipes (and adding electrical mods)
