One of the finest pieces of film making I have ever seen, this scene always brings me to tears. Such a sweet sentiment and something many of us can relate to. This scene reminds us how much we really need each other, and the ups and downs of living with a free heart.
I can not even begin to explain how much this movie this scene makes us feel!
Pappa Steve, Damn its like Hank Sr. said can you make people feel what they feel inside?? Every single one of your movies you do exactly that! This movie Sir well this was breath taking!! chill bumps, tears, strong emotions, and damn SIR I salute you!
I did not like this movie at all....until this scene at the very end. And like that, the whole rest of it was magically erased and rewritten in my head in a really good way.
This is beautiful. At this moment his wife falls back in love with him, his crew remember why they loved him, the reporter realizes his true personality, his producer realizes he should never have doubted him and his nemesis begins to respect him for the first time. Such a moving and yet subtle scene.
I have always loved Wes Anderson's films and felt a strong emotional and even spiritual connection when watching them but when I first saw The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou I did not feel the same as I did with such films as Darjeeling limited or The Royal Tenenbaums but after re-watching and re-watching I started to see the classic Anderson Archetyoes that took place here and I think that this is his most beautiful and powerful portrayal of human flaw and instabilty finding love or happiness.
Best scene of Bill Murray's best role in one of the best movies ever. Poetry at its best. The delivery, execution, and lasting impression are wondrous. Words cannot explain each active emotion felt every second of this scene.
its Wes Andersons greatest masterpiece to date and is quickly becoming the movie closest to my heart, it is truly wonderous in every aspect I could gush about this film forever. At 1:55 when Murray begins to well up, gets me every time. The soundtrack, casting, dialogue and visuals are perfect and Murray is amazing
Could someone explain the 'in 12 years' line? Great movie but I have to agree with the critics in that it seemed like a non-sequitur. In fact there were several moments like that, like when Jeff Goldblum hits the dog with the paper...hmm...
@whatonearthakitt Oh yeah, I got that much. I was just wondering what relevance it has, just seems to be an odd thing to say! (Not the oddest from Mr Anderson of course)
@whatonearthakitt What? How is that Ned's baby? She was 8 months pregnant when they met. She even said that she was impregnated by the editor of her publication (this editor happens to be married--but not to her).
The part that seems to be up for discussion is: What is the significance of the statement in that context? And, simply, why 12 years?
I love that motley crew of characters, Jeff GOldblum, harry potter wizard, the green goblin, angelica huston, etc, loyal vikram filming it all. What a move when they all lay hands on Bill Murray in a show of familial belief, and solidarity in him. Everyone finally saw what people feared was only an illusion, the leopard shark, almost like our lady of fatima.
One reason But Cort is so 'right' for this composition is the girls's statement about her growing baby will be 12 in 11 and half yrs and Bill Murray said that 12 was his favorite age. Of course, all of us movie fans remember the young Bud Cort from the 1970s, Wes Anderson's favorite decade, in Harold and Maude. Harold was sorta 12 ish, and that movie was about attempting to catch and keep the innocence of youth as you grow older - as this movie is also treating.
A total renaissance of the innocence that most of us unfortunately lose as we grow older... "in twelve years he'll be 11 and a half" "that was my favorite age" it's as if he regains in that moment the child like sense of wonder and thirst for discovery that lead him to his profession in the first place before he was corrupted by the limelight. i loved when the violins come in and we see vickrim looking out the window in utter awe. beautifully choreographed. what an amazing scene.
was this song really in this movie? if so amzing more movies need them for a sound track like romace or happy moives or my life >:/ what did i just say any way
I have loved sigur ros for sometime now, so I already knew this song before I watched the movie. But I have to say this song complements this scene quite perfectly. I'm in love.
I was just meandering through these comments and saw this.
The baby wasn't his. Ned also wasn't really his son. However, Ned seemed like he would have been ready to accept Jane's child as his own because he loved Jane. Parallel to this, Steve was coming to accept Ned as his son even though he doubted a biological link. So the baby is like his pseudo grandchild if you will. The child will represent the time he never had with Ned at that age.
I wont lie lol I cried a little bit, musics just to great for that scene ya know :D. Since like third grade i've been insanely interested in sharks and marinebiology, so you can see why i saw this movie and and was like "must watch"
Thanks Bill Murray for playing that role so well. Movie is just way to epic. I can only wish my career will be as exciting :D
I love this scene because it made a very comical character seem very human and sympathetic. They do a great job of giving you that sense of mystery and discovery while also making you feel for zezzou as he morns the lost of a character you never even met. A wonderful comedy with a touching ending. I love every quark and fictional fish.
The critics panned this movie, yet it's my favorite. This is legitimately one of the only videos on YouTube with comments that don't look like they were written by illiterate douchebags. It just goes to show that The Life Aquatic is a movie that only intelligent people appreciate. This movie is pure genius.
@HyperWake777 Intelligence has nothing to do with someone's taste in this movie.
At the risk of sounding egotistical, I am very intelligent, but I absolutely hated this movie. Wes Anderson's style just isn't for me. That's how it is for every audience member when it comes to films. Some speak to them, some don't.
If you were as intelligent as you claim to be, you would understand that. Taste varies, no matter what a person's I.Q. is.
@FilmmakerRyan Well, you could think of it this way: Would a dumb person be interested more in An Inconvenient Truth or Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector? I'm putting my money on Larry. P.S. If you didn't like The Royal Tenenbaums, you can just go ahead and kill yourself. Not to mention, Fantastic Mr. Fox was absolutely genius.
@HyperWake777 I actually have some friends who aren't that bright you do like to watch documentaries and HATE Larry the Cable Guy. Bad call there, buddy.
For someone who acts so superiorly intelligent, you don't seem that bright at all.
@FilmmakerRyan And whose choice is it to say who's "bright" or "not that bright?" Honestly, it seems to me that I'm much more intelligent than you because I don't start senseless arguments on YouTube just for the sake of arguing and I actually give valid information, as opposed to "my friends like this" or "my friends like that." And with that, I will be the mature one and end this conversation right now.
@HyperWake777 "And whose choice is it to say who's 'bright' or 'not that bright?'"

"seems to me that I'm much more intelligent than you because I don't start senseless arguments on YouTube"
I didn't start a senseless argument. I saw an ignorant statement and corrected it. By the way, if it's so senseless, then why are you taking part in it?
"I actually give valid information"
"like what I like, or you're stupid" is not valid information. It's trolling.
@FilmmakerRyan Never said "like what I like," bromigo. All I said was that most intelligent people enjoyed this movie. Sir, you are taking this way out of line. I'm going to need to ask you to calm down, please, sir.
"as opposed to "my friends like this" or "my friends like that."
Examples used to disprove your earlier statement, "Would a dumb person be interested more in An Inconvenient Truth or Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector? I'm putting my money on Larry."
@HyperWake777 I can't say this is my favorite Wes Anderson flick, but you are so totally right on how generally underrated this movie is. I feel like critics seem to dismiss all his movies as typical yuppie indie films, but they're far, far better than that.
@crazyhippo4893 Agreed. Typically, I'm not into Indie films because to me, it feels like they're trying to send off that hipster "no one understands me" vibe, but this movie is completely different.
@HyperWake777 I know exactly what you mean, I am amazed especially how they manage to make such a strange and abrasive Zissou all the way through and yet make him so vulnerable in that line about the shark remembering him. This will always be one of my favourite films.
Fuck all the people who bashed this movie. I feel that this is one of Wes Anderson's best movies, perhaps even better than The Royal Tenenbaums. The critics who railed against this film by saying that Wes had run out of whatever creative juices that had allowed him to create all of his masterpieces up until this point apparently watch Jersey Shores and call that art.
I can't explain why, but this scene always makes me tear up. Maybe it's just Bill Murray being so fragile and the mixture of music. But you can feel it, as if you've been in those shoes before.
Some of these comments are retarded. The 'MEANING' of the film and the 'DEEP COMPLEXITY' of it all. It is a hilarious, entertaining and a fantastic movie and it is my favorite movie of all time. You hipsters need to relax and quit trying to break it down. Just enjoy it, that's what it's for.
@FunkMasterWilson Too true, although I did like the explanation someone gave when they said "this movie is for the people that never lost thier sense of imagination and adventure" - because everyone I know who hates this movie have no imagination.
The coolest part of the scene is at about 00:30, when the music comes in, the "doodoodeedoo" part" that part gets me everytime. this is probably in my top ten favorite movies
one of wes' best scenes all time, god i love this movie and love this band, saw them live at granada in dallas, women were weeping, it was amazing!!!!
It touches some very deep chords of our soul. The shark is the summation of all of his boyhood hopes, but many people whom he wished to share it with are gone. The shark is not his enemy but his friend. It kills me to watch it. How can you not cry?
In addition to what others have gotten out of this scene I thought it was about how you can work so hard for a goal and when you finally achieve it you have changed to where you don't even know why you were after it in the first place.
This was one of the most moving scenes I've seen in a while. When I die, if there's a God, I'd like to personally thank him for allowing me to share this world with one of the funniest human beings in human history. Bill Murray is a fantastic actor and comedian. :)
This movie is so important to me. Its so simple and not particularly brilliant (except thats why it is). I wish this movie got the acclaim and fame it deserved; of the three movies with this flavor, Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic and that new one... with the guy with the big nose... on the train... you know... Ahem; of the three, this is by far the best I think.
@saraguy1921 I don't think the point is that he's not washed up any more. I think for the first time he's seen that fame or public acceptance aren't important, and that he's finally been able to make a connection with the ocean again. Also, he manages to forgive the shark for killing his friend and son.
One of the finest pieces of film making I have ever seen, this scene always brings me to tears. Such a sweet sentiment and something many of us can relate to. This scene reminds us how much we really need each other, and the ups and downs of living with a free heart.

crazyhippo4893 11 months ago
@crazyhippo4893 Agreed. Typically, I'm not into Indie films because to me, it feels like they're trying to send off that hipster "no one understands me" vibe, but this movie is completely different.

@HyperWake777 Team Zissou for life !!!!!!
TheHappydead 9 months ago 2

Masterchickens 1 year ago 2
I can't explain why, but this scene always makes me tear up. Maybe it's just Bill Murray being so fragile and the mixture of music. But you can feel it, as if you've been in those shoes before.

Some of these comments are retarded. The 'MEANING' of the film and the 'DEEP COMPLEXITY' of it all. It is a hilarious, entertaining and a fantastic movie and it is my favorite movie of all time. You hipsters need to relax and quit trying to break it down. Just enjoy it, that's what it's for.

@FunkMasterWilson Too true, although I did like the explanation someone gave when they said "this movie is for the people that never lost thier sense of imagination and adventure" - because everyone I know who hates this movie have no imagination.

whyyyyy isn't this on the Soundtrack for the movie? jesus.

The coolest part of the scene is at about 00:30, when the music comes in, the "doodoodeedoo" part" that part gets me everytime. this is probably in my top ten favorite movies

It touches some very deep chords of our soul. The shark is the summation of all of his boyhood hopes, but many people whom he wished to share it with are gone. The shark is not his enemy but his friend. It kills me to watch it. How can you not cry?
frmaximos 1 year ago 5
In addition to what others have gotten out of this scene I thought it was about how you can work so hard for a goal and when you finally achieve it you have changed to where you don't even know why you were after it in the first place.

This was one of the most moving scenes I've seen in a while. When I die, if there's a God, I'd like to personally thank him for allowing me to share this world with one of the funniest human beings in human history. Bill Murray is a fantastic actor and comedian. :)
roonalwazlib 1 year ago 2
This movie is so important to me. Its so simple and not particularly brilliant (except thats why it is). I wish this movie got the acclaim and fame it deserved; of the three movies with this flavor, Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic and that new one... with the guy with the big nose... on the train... you know... Ahem; of the three, this is by far the best I think.

I totally bawled at this part.
I truly connect with all Wes Anderson films.
He just... understands people.
moviefreakjj 1 year ago 2
We saw this in my FILM CLASS and when it got to Bill Murray saying "I Wonder if it still remembers me," I had to cover my eyes I was crying so hard.
All the crap he had to go through and now he finally proved himself that he is not completely washed up as people believe him to be.
saraguy1921 1 year ago 33
@saraguy1921 fortunately, all his friends and enemies are there with him to behold that :)
Baldrich 1 year ago
@saraguy1921 I don't think the point is that he's not washed up any more. I think for the first time he's seen that fame or public acceptance aren't important, and that he's finally been able to make a connection with the ocean again. Also, he manages to forgive the shark for killing his friend and son.
