In my opinion the Hawker Hurricane did most of the dirty work in the allied victory in europe in WW2. The spitfire got most of the glory, but still was an important part of history.
@RainbowManification Well it was a team effect in the Battle of Britain. The Spitfire took on the fighters so the Hurricane could take care of the bombers
This very spitfire is a Photo-recon varient - A Mark XI.
In the video, this very aeroplane is registered G-MKXI and kept at North Weald aerodrome, owned by Peter Teichman. When this shot was taken in the late 1990's, however the aircraft was being flown by the late Mark Hanna and was maintained by the Old Flying Machine Company and based here at Duxford.
It's a later mark, pointy vert. stab and Griffon engine cowling. STILL beutiful though... The MkI through IX Spits are the most beutiful flying machines EVER built. Period.
I read an interview of an old Battle of Britain veteran. He was 85 at the time. He said that if he could go for one more airplane ride, pick anything he wanted it would be a Mk. IX Spit because the flew so sweet. Then he said, "But,if you told me there would be Messerschmitts waiting for me up there... I'd take a P-51!'
Actually that wasn't a griffin, it was a Merlin 70. By the looks of it, its a PR. XI. Look at the bulged chin right under the prop. They had to fit a larger oil tank and thats why it has the bulged appearance. It also has a retractable tale wheel.
if i remember correctly you can indentify a MkV from a MkIX by looking at the exhaust outlets protruding from the engine, the V has three either side whereas the IX has eight i think
You can't really use that ID method more because they interchange engines theese days. To me it looks more like a PR XI, the slight bulge right under the propeller seems to indicate that and it looks to me to be paninte blue or grey overall
Most likely on the late Vc's and LF Vb's im assuming but either way look at the chin on this one....it has a bulged chin which was for the larger oil tank on the X and XI.
You'd should've seen the Lancaster when it was outside of town. Static Display all morn, and afternoon. Then, a fire-up-taxi, and take off. 4 Merlins at full throttle. It was amazing. The pilot then buzzed the field. Stunning. My Wifes Uncle helped re-wire the one flying in Canada.
That's the most beautiful sound in the world, and what it stands for is suitably encompassed in all that is the spitfire. When i see it perform the roll at the end of the pass, with the sun glinting off it's wings and fuselage, I swell with pride for the fact that i am british.
That only happens to engines who don't have fuel-injection. When they go into zero G or negative G, like in a roll, the flow of the fuel is disrupted and the engine cuts for a brief time until the engine goes back to positive G's.
The most unatural thing in the world is a straight line, even the horizon is curved, look at that beuty not a straight line on it, well done R J Mitchell
i know any war is horrible but the sound of the merlin wether it be spitfire lacaster or whichever plane they were fitted to if you are a true brit just makes your heart skip a beat no sound like it or ever will be the sound of freedom a thing forgotten in modern day brittain with all the modern monitoring cctv identity cards we are the nazis we faught against !!!
The evocative chorus of the old Merlin - there's nothing better than the sound of each piston firing ... HAVE ALWAYS & WILL ALWAYS HAVE GOOSE BUMPS WHEN I HEAR THAT SOUND!!!!!!!
i would be scared to hell to be germans in world war II,merlins are a beautiful noise but for the germans,,haha well that was a sign of,,,,watch out,or else ur gonna be creameddd
great speech of Yours...creameddd german peoples...yeah.....hahahaha...you are funny.
Go and love the sounds of death....I like the enginesounds of the Mustang, of the Spitfire, of the Messerschmitt, of the FockeWulf...but not the damm Ratatatatatatata....
It is not dumb people who get conned on the internet. It is people who have trust. It does make you clever to be mugger or a slimy con artist. It makes you evil. I allways blame the abuser.
Supermarine were already owned by Vickers-Armstrong by the start of the war and all aircraft were named as Vickers Supermarine, so you're both right, sort of.

Beautiful aircraft, the Brits got it right with the Spitfire. Too bad a war had to inspire aircraft like the Spit, the Mustang, Corsair, etc...

MK IX has 12 exhaust collector, 6 per side. MK V's had 3 per side.

It's the only flying Pr.XI Spitfire, PL965. A true combat veteran with some 40 trips over Germany to her credit.
There's only 4 Pr.XIs in existence, two in museums, one under restoration to fly, and this one.
