  • no finer music ever...this is just soul reaching and it it shines on me...

  • Fantastic! Love the "outer space pharmacist" outfits. :) Seriously, Todd & co. are geniuses. To think this was on a daytime talk show, good on ya, Mike!

  • I LOVE the motorcycle drum kit!!

  • @DebnDeb That is an anti gravity pod !! Look at the instruments and the "Star Trek" trousers !! It is all space /sci-fi !!

  • Mike Douglas was cool. I remembered of all people, Dinah Shore was on this show, and her saying what a beautiful song it was Todd and the guys did. Dinah Shore complimenting Todd and Utopia...it was surreal, but cool!

  • Great video. Thanks

  • love is the answer,jejeje

  • Is Mike still alive, anyone know?!!!

  • @phambo101 Mike Douglas died on his 81st birthday.

  • rundgren is just a special performer and his band is great! Kaz- willie and rog-

  • cool clip....awesome...and yeah. Mike Douglas was a hip cat...wonderful dude...

  • Todd was so "techy" before it was cool! Timeless...this music will be Timeless.... BRILLIANT! always loved him...always will.... thanks for posting

  • That...is...an AWESOME DRUM KIT.

  • @jasongogal It looked like a cross between a barber chair and an ironing board....

  • @tomkat1983 and a Harley, lol

  • My late father was the make-up artist for the Mike Douglas Show when it started. In Cleveland. He met the Stones.

  • Love this song, hated England Dan's version. This should have been Todd's hit anyway.

  • I would have loved to have seen this band...this was one of my favorites!

  • What is with the drum set?

  • @jgindhart1: It was in the style of a motorcycle. On the Utopia tour, it would revolve, the headlamps would light up ... pretty awesome. There are some clips here, somewhere, that you can see Willie's Motorcycle "lighting up."

  • KTLA put their logo on screen because they KNEW one day this clip would be on YouTube™ and they wanted their props!! Ha ha...!

  • The Mike Douglas Show was great. He may not of understood, or even liked popular music, but he really did appreciate it and gave a lot of artists amazing visibility.

  • there was a song that I liked waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy back when...........MORE ROCK AND ROLL.........help/

  • Douglas started with Kay Kyser's Orchestra ...who had a hit with "Praise The Lord And Pass The Ammunition"...no fear of controversy with that group.

  • True--Mike Douglas had some great musicians drop by (Frank Zappa I recall too). Dinah Shore was a guest on this show and complimented Utopia with having written a "beautiful song"....what a trip that was. ;)

  • I like England Dan and John Ford Coley's version, But Todd is equally as awesome!

  • is he on drugs?

  • great to hear him sing this live. in concert it usually comes as an encore when his voice is rough. this sounds like he does on the record.

  • I came home from junior high one day in 1980, turned on the TV and saw this -

been a Utopia / Todd Rundgren fanatic ever since

thank you so much for uploading this!!

  • I love Todd Rundgren's version so much more than England Dan and J.F.C. It's a shame that this version never even reached the charts.

  • Willie's crazy spinning drum set sounds...terrible! Looks cool, though.

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE! This might possibly be my favorite song ever. Thank you Todd, I love you! I listen to this song so much that my four year old goes around singing it and I have to say, it is very cute!

  • What a song what a band. This music the way it is ment to be played and sung. Todd is a master song wirter. 100 out of 100.

  • Love Todd Rundgren! He has one of the purest voices. Not that it matters, but in 1980, that was a pretty high-tech mike he was using...

  • I think they're probably right.

  • WOW!! early todd!! i love the outfits on the group...great song by a great talent...I LUV TODD...thanx a lot for the video...

  • Never sell Mike Douglas short, he had John Lennon co-hosting his show when he was having his deportment problems with Uncle Sam over some Pot - can you imagine that today? Mike knew talented artists when he saw them, and was never afraid to give them a platform. As much as Todd was ahead of his time - so was Mike.

  • @tb35pa

Bravo!!! I agree, completely. Mike D. was an icon to me when I was growing up!

  • didnt realize how many times the band was on mike douglas show...thanks mike.. love is truly the answer....

  • Those of us from the SE PA area can remember what a staple Mike Douglas was. He was old guard, coming from the big band entertainment days, a little out of touch with the evolving pop cultural scene, but he was a sweetheart of a guy. And you can bet you socks that he was happy to promote hometown boy Todd on his Philly-based show, because that's just the kind of guy he was.

  • The Mike Douglas Show...with Utopia...how utterly cool.

  • Thanks a lot for posting.

  • I like this stripped-down New Wave version.

  • 5***** Bravo, man. Awesome upload. Thank you!
