  • Fail

  • You're all wrong. Life is Beautiful should have won.

  • For a moment there, when he opened the envelope, I thought he said 'shakespeare in love' lol

  • even the thin red line is better then shakeseare in love

  • I thought it was a good movie, and I've seen far worse winners than Shakespeare In Love...

  • The Thin Red Line was WAY ahead of its competition. Just saying.

  • haterz can hate, but Shakespeare in love deserved to win... and SPR is overrated

  • You have to ask yourself a question...Which movie made a bigger impact on your life, and which movie do you remember the most? I bet hardly anyone really remembers, talks about, or thinks of "shakespeare in love" when they think of great movies. Saving private ryan on the other hand will always rest in my heart as one of the most emotionaly enthralling movies of al time, and im sure most people would agree.

  • @LacosTacosPacos I do agree with you on that.

  • Love Shakespeare in Love!!!

But I thought SPR deserved the win

  • Havery - Fucking loser - Weinten thats why

  • not only that every other movie in the catagory was ten times better then Shakespeare in Love, this movie shouldant have been nominated. its way to overated

  • Saving Private Ryan, produced by Indiana Jones director Steven Spielberg.

  • NOOOO. saving private ryan is the real winner!!

  • I love their choice for Shakespeare in Love...its refreshing to see a comedy winning Best Picture, instead of another tragic film-although all the nominee's were beautiful films, Shakespeare In Love was the best picture that year and deserved to win!

  • Harrison Ford looked disgusted.

  • @CaptainAmerica322 He totally did!

  • Exhibit 1A that Harvey Weinstein is the best Oscar campaigner ever.

  • 1:28 even Gwyneth "can't believe it"

  • She said "There is no Director..." oh wait Steven Spielberg is a better Director and So was the movie itself!!!!

  • I don't understand why people despised Shakespeare in Love so much! It looks like my kind of movie because I love Shakespeare and I'm a sucker for love films. I've seen Saving Private Ryan, it was a brilliant film, but there was just SO much depression in it reliving the horrifying events of WWII that I sobbed through half the film. Shakespeare in Love made me laugh through most of the film and I found more enjoyable in my opinion. I know you all will wanna kill me for this but I'm glad it won!

  • Saving Private Ryan is the best all the time!

  • Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line and Life is Beautiful were all better movies

  • i think that movie beat pvt ryan by 1 vote

  • I detect heavy regret in Harrison Ford's voice.

  • WTF IS Shakespeare in Love AND HOW DID IT BEAT SAVING PRIVATE RYAN WTF THE OSCARS ARE A JOKE TO ME NOW

  • NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You would expect Harrison Ford to lie and say Saving Private Ryan won and throw that stupid piece of paper away! Well, obviously the Academy would know, but everyone knows the members of the Academy who voted for "Shakespeare in Love" were on drugs.

  • NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Complete bullshit! How does some Shakespeare in Love win over Saving Private Ryan? The first 20 minutes alone warranted an Oscar win. The Academy needs to formally apologize for this. It was like back when Crash won over Brokeback Mountain and Good Night, Good Luck.

  • Comment removed

  • Bullshit...

  • @coldstaind91 But then Harvey Weinstein can do anything, right? They won because of him...

  • that dumb bimbo forgot to thank a few other people...the ones portrayed in Saving Private Ryan.

  • guys chill, everyone knows the academy r dumb fucks and the best movie of the year usually doesnt win best picture

  • life is beautiful was the better movie this year.... I don't like shakespeare in love!

  • Anyone else think they should've thanked Shakespeare...just a bit...

They couldn't have won it without HIM! ;)

(And yeah, Saving Private Ryan probably should've won a Best Picture statue, tough call, and they always take the artsier films...as a Shakespeare fan, I'm not complaining--BOTH were FAR better films than that pile of trash "Anonymous" that's out there now--and as both Shakespeare in Love and Saving Private Ryan go down as great films...

All's Well That Ends Well!) :D

  • They're amazed they won

  • Loo at Ford's face when he looked at the card. He knew it shouldn't of won. Saving Private Ryan was a powerful movie. Shakespeare in love was overrated as fuck.

  • This sucked

  • Great winner. The script is genius. If you read a lot of Shakespeare, you would probably love this movie.

  • Members of the Academy who voted... you are freaking bastards.

  • Harrison Ford got that frozen in carbonate look when he saw the card.

  • Off topic, but if you noticed, 3/5 nominees take place in World War II (Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, and Life is Beautiful), and the other 2/5 take place in the 16th Century Elizabethan Era when Elizabeth I was queen (Elizabeth and Shakespeare in Love). Just something I found interesting.

  • What a fuckin joke

  • Based purely on the Weinstein's Lobbying and marketing for this film, possibly the most average film to have won, yeah Ok, but not best picture worthy

  • Saving Private Ryan should've won. It's a fantastic, dramatic film. This film is mostly boring and it's TOO much love (especially love scenes).

  • Shakespeare In LOL !!!!!!

  • This was truly the battle between the theatre people and the film people, and in this case, the theatre people won. I happen to be a fan of both, so I would have been happy with either Shakespeare in Love or Saving Private Ryan.

  • and this is why the oscars don't matter. because shit like "shakespeare in love" and "dances with wolves" win over far superior movies.

  • marjan-siklic-1.blogspot.com/

  • This one over Saving Private Ryan and Life is beautiful? What?

  • Life is Beautiful should have won. All are great films, saving private ryan is to based around action to win. Biggest steals were Forrest Gump beating Shawshank, and Goodfellas losing to Dances with wolfs, those are fucking bullshit.

  • The Truman Show should've been nominated instead of Shakespeare in love

  • Shakespeare in Love isn't bad. It's just a cliché movie. Saving Private Ryan is very emotional, The Thin Red Line is even more emotional, Elisabeth is not bad and Life is Beautiful is well directed.

  • Alright, lissen up--"Shakespeare In Love" was a stolen script, it was stolen from at least three other scripts. It's stolen merchandise. And "Saving Private Ryan" was just a rip-off of "The Longest Day" and "The Five Sullivans". Why are we giving awards to common thieves? Quit arguing about which movie was better--they're "stolen cars" so to speak and should be stripped of any awards they garnered, except Best Screenplay should be given to the original writers. 'Nuff said?

  • Life is Beautiful shoulda won.

  • if i was in the audience that night i would have thrown tomatoes at harvey weinstein

  • Comment removed

  • The right movie won. SPL is a masterpiece.

  • @raysaudia what a fucking joke nobody talks about this trife anymore, saving private ryan is a masterpiece and it was robbed!

  • I didn't believe so much bullshit could be cramped into a video of length 4:27, but I stand corrected.............. crappy SIL, what a disgrace in all I call cinema

  • okay. i am a young woman who loves a lot of things from the victorian or elizabethan era and i liked this movie. however, i think it's CUTE. i went on youtube looking for some scenes and i found this. this is hilarious and sad at the same time. i haven't even watched the other films and i know they are better! what a joke.

  • There is no such thing as a bad movie winning this award BESIDES The Greatest Show On Earth. Some movies might deserve it more than others and it can be upsetting, but it in NO WAY makes these movies bad. I agree, Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line were the best choices but it in no way means this movie is bad! Its still a great film. Just to be nominated means something!

  • One of these days I hope the Academy comes out and formally apologizes for Shakespeare in Love winning Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan. Still to this day the biggest joke in the history of the Oscars. I'm watching SPR as I'm typing this, and every five minutes or so the same question goes through my head: "How the FUCK did this not win Best Picture???".

  • @SilverAxe13 In my opinon, the biggest joke in Oscar history is fucking Dances with Wolves beating Goodfellas for best picture

  • @thecarreyman2323 how green was my valley over CITIZEN KANE

  • @SilverAxe13 Shakespeare in Love is awesome you FUCK!

  • @SilverAxe13 Your probably just saying that because your not a fan of the type of movie. I actually like both movies, but Shakespeare In Love is better in my opinion

  • @SilverAxe13 Yep, biggest joke indeed, second biggest joke is Transformers losing out to The Golden Compass for best SFX.

  • @SilverAxe13 totally effin' agreed. spr affected me so hard i don't think i'll ever forget it. and sil wins... sigh.

  • Witness

    Goodfellas

    Pulp Fiction

    The Shawshank Redemption

    Saving Private Ryan

  • I put in Saving Private Ryan wins Best Picture and got this. Is this a joke or something?

  • @moneyplays17 apparently nobody told you that spr did not win

  • Saving Private Ryan should have won, but at least Harvey Weinstein and Edward Zwick got oscars that year

  • I know there are a few people out there who agree with this win, but I did a poll on Rotten Tomatoes and this was ranked as the worst Best Picture mistake of all time. I personally agree. This is an insult to everything the academy stands for (or that I thought they stood for) It was just Harvey Weinstein's smear campaign that gave this film its highly incorrect win. he called it 'historically inaccurate' Baloney. Spielberg doesn't make war films inaccurate (look at Schindler's List).

  • I don't care about what people say, I absolutely love this movie and I always will. No, I'm not a "romantic freak" and yes, I'm also a big fan of SPR. But the inspiration that this movie transmits is unquestionable, being a love movie or not. I think it has to be really ignorant to just say that Shakespeare sucked without having any notion about the conceptual of the movie. Just try to understand how annoying is to see people always saying the same things here: "ROBBERY!".

  • Just goes to show, everything in hollywood is fake - especially this shit

  • the tourettes guy disliked this video

  • Best Oscar Moment.

I just love Shakespeare in Love. It is in my iphone. I watch it always and never gets tired out of watching it. Just like what harvey Weinstein says "it is an ensemble film"

  • guys...guys ...it is not about being patriotic. The Weinsteins helped made the best movies in the last two decades. Shakespeare's screenplay is amazing. A masterpiece, the acting, the Art Direction and the Music which both won over Saving Private Ryan, all contributed to make it the best picture, for me, ever. Again the screenplay is amazing.

  • @minghellaever the weinsteins are the biggest criminals in oscar history, the only films that win best picture are ones with terrible quality and are motivated by politics, this is why i refuse to watch these ceremonies

  • Screw the haters, Shakespeare in Love winning is one of the coolest things the Academy has ever done. This was a little romantic comedy about freaking Shakespeare that happened to be beautifully acted and written. Spielberg deserved his Oscar for Saving Private Ryan--the D-Day sequence is absolutely brilliant. But Shakespeare in Love is a great film, and truly deserved this.

Whatever, The Thin Red Line was the best nominee anyway, haha.

  • harvey weinstein's bribing campaign is why this bullshit happened

  • "The Thin Red Line" should have won imo.

  • I can't understand why everyone is so upset about Shakespeare in Love's win.

This movie is one of the most intellectual, funniest, happiest, saddest and most beautiful movies of all time. You have to watch the movie more than ten times because there are so many details you can't recognize after the first watch.

The other nominees are also good movies, but nothing compared to such an inspiration like Shakespeare in Love. This movie gives me so much joy, happiness and tears. I simply love it!

  • @haruhiism00 You've said it all. The first time I've watched this, I didn't like, after the third or fourth time I watched, I became a fan. Personally, I think that so many war movies have already won BP - not saying anything about SPR, a wonderful film - but it was time to something with a different kind of inspiration take this award, and this movie has so much beauty, so much poetry, from the beginning to the end. Simply wonderful, totally deserved.

  • @haruhiism00 Well in my opinion Shakespeare in Love did not deserve the win Saving Private Ryan had every detail about the war the direction was incredible ( Steven Spielberg of course ) the cinematography was amazing aswell and the screenplay incredible, but best of all was the Powerful performances from Hanks and the rest of the cast.

So yeah thats why I think Saving Private Ryan should have won Best Picture.

  • One of the worst years for Oscars besides last year. King's Speech my ass.

  • @moviemaniac14,

Not all of it was bad. Natty Portman finally won an Oscar, The Social Network won Best Editing & Music (This is actually debatable), Wally Pfister won Best Cinematography & Christian bale finally won an Oscar. But yeah, Hailee Steinfeld should have won BSA, and either Black Swan, Scoial Network or Inception should have won BP.

Oh yeah, and Shakespeare in Love sucked.

  • @moviemaniac14 I'm right with you. The Social Network deserved Best Picture a hell of a lot more than The King's Speech. Destined to be another major Oscar f*** up like this one (though not nearly as criminal).

  • @moviemaniac14,

The Social Network and Inception were way better IMHO.

  • The biggest oscar upset since Citizen Kane.

  • @511TBone And Star Wars.

  • the academy becomes stupid since the 60s.

  • "Saving Private Ryan" is GREAT for the first 20 minutes, then just GOOD after that. "Shakespeare in Love" was fine, but as far as I'm concerned, the best and most creative film of 1998 was "The Truman Show," which was foolishly not even nominated.

  • @soaphunks There are some things in life that deserve recognition just because of what they are. Saving Private Ryan is one of those things. It was the first time an audience saw in full horrific detail what the men of WWII went through. Before that it was nothing but John Wayne tongue and cheek propaganda bullshit.

The landing scene alone should have won it best picture; Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg should be given a medal for their projects, never letting us forget that generation.

  • why does the academy always snub war films? apocalypse now and saving private ryan are the top 2 war films ever and they got robbed!

  • sorry, but to say that saving private ryan has a great screenplay and great acting is a lie. it's writing is its biggest problem and the acting is decent, but not really great. yes, shakespeare didn't deserve to win. but spr didn't either. the thin red line was a great film! deserving of this oscar!

  • This is one of the biggest robberies at the Oscars since Tommy Lee Jones won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor fpr "The Fugitive."

Congratulations Oscars, you fucked up once again. Fucking idiots.

  • Comment removed

  • Harrison looks like a robot o.o

  • I wonder if there's ever been a more awkward moment in Academy Awards history.

    ...probably not.

  • The thin red line is very underrated

  • FAIL!!!!!!!!

  • who the hell votes in the academy i'm seriously saving private ryan destroys this movie in every cinematic aspect

  • Comment removed

  • Saving Private Ryan should've won!

  • biggest robbery in oscar history

  • @vadimzdonutube No, Crash over Brokeback Mountain was bigger.

  • i'm going to decide to live in my fantasy world and believe that all of the people hating on one of my favorite films of all time, shakespeare in love, are the loud minority; anti-intellectuals, all of whom will one day be gone from the world due to natural selection.

  • @83bkrebs Hey i believe the same thing only instead its those who believe S.I.L deserved this oscar instead of saving private ryan

  • Harrison Ford is probably thinking "are you SHITTING ME??" when he opens up the envelope.

  • @SilverAxe13 Totally agree....lol

  • I think people should stop going on about what should have won, and appreciate what has won.

  • Shakespeare in love, intellent movie!

  • Life is Beautiful and Saving Private Ryan deserved it, not Shakespear.

  • What the fuck these people cheering for?! I'd stop myself mid-clap.

  • The thin red line is a much better movie than overrated Saving...

  • No wonder Terence Malick doesn't make more movies, his masterpieces get dissed for this garbage. Not that he probably cares about awards anyway.

  • Saving Pvt Ryan was great but not nearly as original as Shakespeare was, so many war movies had laid the ground work for Pvt, it was a natural progression .....there was never a script like Shakespeare before, it should of opened the eyes of what could be done in movies and spawned other great stories, we're still waiting i think...........

  • The hate for Shakespeare in Love is hilarious, yet really unwarranted. SiL will always be a better movie than SPR.

Besides, the best nominee was The Thin Red Line, so whatever.

  • Comment removed

  • one of my favorite movies of all time!

  • Saving Private Ryan is (in my opinion) one of the best films ever made. I mean to diss Spielberg like THAT! Probably the biggest mistake that the Academy ever made.

  • I LOVED shakespeare in love!

  • Harvey Weinstein is a fucking machine! The English Patient, Shakespeare in Love, Chicago, The Lord of the Rings, The King's Speech all won Best Picture. Pulp Fiction, Il Postino, Good Will Hunting, The Cider House Rules, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, Finding Neverland, The Reader, Inglourious Basterds all nominated for best picture. What can you say?

  • BULLSHIT

  • This film goes on the list that includes The Greatest Show on Earth, Crash, Slumdog Millionaire, and The Lord of the Rings of worst films chosen for Best Picture.

  • @TheChicagoguy never seen greatest show on earth so i cant say.... i agree crash wasnt anything amazing, slumdog millionaire was great as was lord of the rings... i would say it adds onto more like a list of the hurt locker and the departed

  • @TheChicagoguy r u dumb lotr deserved it all the way against the other nominees that year

  • It is always hard to judge the best in a year of bests. There was not a unworthy film nominated in 1998. That is not true every year. Be grateful for 1998 and all of our favorites [nominated] for that year.

  • Shakespeare in Love destroyed the Oscars.

  • it was a good movie....but truman show and saving private ryan was far better....truman show didnt even get nominated...

  • Dude,no one remembers this damn boring movie,if the academy really did't want to give the oscar to spielberg they could give it at least to "elizabeth which had an amazing performance by cate blanchett.

  • Saving Private Ryanx10>Shakespeare in Love

  • Saving Private Ryan

  • For me, it was between THE THIN RED LINE and LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL.

THE THIN RED LINE deserved to win.

  • @RaoulDuKe313 i agree... i've only seen 3 from that year (shakespeare in love i hated, saving private ryan was good it wasnt what i expected with all the hype though and the thin red line which was incredible)

  • shakespeare in love is one of my favorite movies, but i'm very surprised that it won so many oscars.

  • The look on Harrison Ford's face looked like he wanted to say "And the Oscar goes to ... Shakesp ... what the fuck ... Shakespeare in Love."

  • Saving Private Ryan stands alongside Citizen Kane, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Apocalypse Now as one of the greatest films ever not to win Best Picture. It is laughable that Shakespeare in Love won!

  • the Academy can never please everyone on their decisions. But this is different! S.P.R. is an instant classic! S.I.L. good movie but not an Oscar worthy! Its like a fine-curved pebble just won over jades, diamonds, & golds

  • hell, any of the rocky movies were better than shakespeare in love

  • I remember even movie critiques on tv said 'Shakespeare in Love' will win more oscars but the best picture will be 'Saving Private Ryan' surely, the film Saving Private Ryan was robbed for best picture.. or i would've been happier to see if Life is beautiful won the best picture instead..

  • This movie Shakespeare in love is never put in my mind, its so forgettable

  • One the worst academy award winning movies.... Not a bad movie but Elizabeth, Life Is Beautiful, Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line were far better!!!! Huge mistake

  • Who the hell remembers Shakespeare in Love? That movie has just gone deep into the dusty shelves of forgotten hollywood movies... Saving Private Ryan got robbed

  • And I turn this shit off after the lady starts talking because honesty? who cares

  • Total bullcrap that SPR didn't win. But oh well, in 50 years who's going to honestly remember Shakespeare in Love anyway?

  • @sxerunner

In 50 years? Its been barely a dozen and there's hardly ever a mention of Shakespear while Saving Private Ryan is still remembered today and will always be remembered as a landmark film that was one of the best in depicting the horrors of war.

  • I will never understand how this could've happened. Anything but Shakespeare in Love, preferably Saving Private Ryan, but any other film was better than the winner.

  • Shakespeare in Love will still be revered when Ryan recedes to just another John Wayne WWII wannabe, like dozens and dozens of others. America normally lauds illiteracy. This was a fluke, but a good one, so fluke all you war lovers.

  • @slownoman

I haven't ever heard of anyone talk about Shakespeare in Love since its Oscar win. BUT I still hear plenty of people talk about Saving Private Ryan even today.

  • 1:08. That says it all.

  • I loved Saving Private Ryan, but Shakespeare in Love was incredible. Granted its not a drama and emotional, but still a great fantastic film, is a great fantastic film.

  • Shakespeare in Love simply should NOT have won. No question.

  • I'm just gonna come out and say that The Thin Red Line deserved this.

  • wow that year had so many good movies...i also believe that private ryan is a little overrated but great movie and better than shakespeare in love...but i think the best movie that year was life is beatiful...seriously i loved that movie...ooh and i am not italian

  • Harrison is like WTF?

  • I liked "Shakespeare" but it was not, in my opinion, even close to being the Best Picture. "Private Ryan" was worthy of BP. "Thin Red Line" was worthy. "Shakespeare" deserved a nomination but not the win.

  • Comment removed

  • @drxwnedxwxrld First of all he didn't insult you and I cant believe you actually thought Shakespeare in Love's screenplay and performances were better than the ones of Saving Private Ryan's brilliant screenplay and Powerful, Heartbreaking performances. Im not gonna call you a film idiot cause I am a mature person

  • Comment removed

  • @drxwnedxwxrld you gotta be kidding me? saving private has some of the best scenes in movie history, the actors are great (specially Tom Hanks and Jeremy Davies), the screenplay is very realistic and the soundtrack is amazing. i respect your opinion. and the academy really sucks.

PS: why an amazing movie like The Thin Red Line is empty of academy awards? at least for best screenplay

  • @MuggleSnuggles at least they gave spielberg best director

  • @MuggleSnuggles I agree with you. Actually, in my opinion, "Life is Beautiful" should have won. Some of you may not like it as much as "Saving Private Ryan" or "The thin red line", but I think "Life is Beautiful was wonderful and charming! I cried and I laughed. Maybe the best foreign language film!

  • Shakespeare in love was a great movie

  • @missionbears not even half as good as SPR

  • I thought this was a bull shit call on the academy, saving private ryan owned that year.

  • I facepalmed when Saving Private Ryan didn't win

  • That is just stupid

  • was this the beginning of the Weinsteins buying Oscars?

  • @cbhitman1 it was,they continued with chicago...

  • @cbhitman1 yeah, it was, and this year is back with 'The King's Speech' !!!

Saving Private Ryan :3 fuck you, Weinstein >=(

  • if a war movie should have won that was The Thin red line, not the overrated SPR

  • Fucking Harvey Weinstein. It has been said that this movie won Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan and Gwyneth won over Cate Blanchett because he mounted the most aggressive and at the time at least I think, expensive Oscar-vote campaign ever seen in Hollywood. It clearly worked. He also didn't let Edward Zwick do any of the talking, and it's quite clear that he only did it to get "Oscar-winning producer" on his resume. I have a hard time not believing that given his behavior here.

  • I put in Saving Private Ryan winning Best Picture and I get THIS?!
