hey, High Falootin' Woman, in my opinion, happens to be just 1 of their claims to fame. They burst onto the scene and never left. You could hear them 3 miles away, and they always sounded fantastic. No skimping on the necessities. If anything, maybe a bit tooo much, if that's possible. Always ready. Always steady. They came to play, and you always got your moneys' worth; and more. They were both, a great opening act as well as the Main Show. I have no idea what they could have done 2 be better.
i didn't know that the critics disliked GRAND FUNK. They have always played everything to perfection, or as close as can be. You never get 2nds from Grand Funk...It's always straight-up, in your face, pure Rock N Roll. 3 guys, living a dream, and doing quite well at it. I've seen them several times and yet have only great things to say about them. I wish I could play as well as Mark does. As a younger rocker, these guys were my favorites, they have withstood the test of time. I'm a FUNKER. . .
most groups go thru an evolution when their early work is raw, powerful and novice sounding. Once they get popular the record companies spend $ on the recordings and productions and the songs get more radio play translating ithe group nto a cash cow. Sell out maybe but it is better to get paid well for what you do well than to not get paid for what u do well. Unfortunately the accountants/agents end up making more than the band.
Fiint Michigan and God saved Grand Funk! Love em. Mark,Don and Mel God Bless you and get a Limosine! Dave from Detroit, Dixon W-ABX,bless him for album Rock.
I am 31 years old, but the last ten years of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21th century just has made poor music, yes there are some exception, but the 50, 60, 70 and 80, those years were the best in the music industry, WHY, Because God sended the best in music, like GRAND FUNK, RARE EARTH, DOORS, BALCK SABBATH, LED ZEPPELIN and so on.
hope my earlier post was canceled. Had nothing to do with the video, sorry. Had the privilege to see the original group 3 times. To pound out such great hard rock for a 3 piece group can be beat. The addition of Graig Frost , who i believe was with them for a while in the late 60's did add to an already wonderful sound. They never indulged in hard drugs , just pot and according to Janis Joplin a little booze. Mark is a christian now and had christian believes back then. Hall of fame maybe .
Checking me out im of the age when we had the Albums for 4.99c I wish i still had them. Just the memorys staring at the cover while hearing the songs. Shaker doing the job of rytem an base. Then he goes Ape shit an expands. All those huge speakers back then. A few partys later there all splitting from the base. YEah i would say they were always a good time GFR. An the best of times.
they had to start making pop music because their manager ripped them off and they had no money left. I felt the same way until I heard the true story.
"Uncle Jam Wants You" I was eight when this albumn came out and my cousin gave me a sticker with uncle sam pointing with that written on it I stuck it on a binder and I suddenly got the nod from the older kids - especially when they found out that I actually listened to the band and knew lyrics and titles In those days you were held in regard for something like that - not slammed and pushed back into "your place" like now Could use a few hippies and soul-bros like that now
i sure did love that little blues trill that Farner did on this. i loved the sound of that weird Guild Messenger he played. actually great guitar work on this.
Hear this music, and this album, then American Band and Locomotion and junk like that. Sorry but I don't find that stuff as appealing as this stuff. To me it seems like they went from hard rock to glam rock. Just my opinion. But if you guys like that stuff, then thats cool too. Just not a fan.
I never saw the change as a sell out, but merely the evolution that every band goes thru over time. Especially when you add a full time keyboard player. These guys were just kids when they started, you gotta figure something is going to change as they mature as musicians. Can't remember too many bands that didn't do that. in fact it usually kills the band off. All too common tale.
Not sure they were "trying" to be popular as they went on. I think they just ran their course. Every artist has a vital period. Even McCartney ran out of stuff. And in the case of GFR, the youthful energy was so much a part of their sound. That can't last forever. But it's great that we have it on record.
no, it wasn't quite like that. the industry changed too much at that time, and many of the hard rockers changed with it, had to tone down for a small club sound... because that's what music people were buying. try to imagine no Cinderella, Racer X or Metallica; you can't, because that was where the trend went, and i can't see GFR going that way.
"Arena Rock" as we knew it was phasing out, and guess what? we've been slowly coming back to it.
@TheCenter54 They were millions of dollars in debt, when they did Loco-motion and Some kind of wonderful, etc...the music is not as good as the early stuff, I think it's still good, and it's great they managed to bounce back, and not end up in prison!
@GrandFunker Yes as far back as the Red Album album the band was covering other artist's songs and then on Survival they covered two other songs that were not their own so it does not seem like a stretch of the imagination that they yet again covered Loco-motion along with Some Kinda Wonderful which were big hits for them. It takes a confident band to take on a million selling song and do your own version in my opinion.
The reason for recording songs like American Band, Locomotion was that they got a raw deal from Terry knight and recieved literally no royalties. After they fired him, they got a different contract with the record company and finally got true rock star wages they deserved. Some may say its a sell-out but one does need to make money.
@TheCenter54 Yeah man.. I dont know nothing about them. But when first contact downloading at Kazzaa I got some bad musics IMO.. This things here are the TOP!
@TheCenter54 Well, they changed after GF Phoenix with the new member on the keyboard (I don't remember his name) with We are an American band... But at that time, they left an unforgettable trace in the rock!!
@mphandel "sell-outs" are folks who basically sell themselves or their ideals in order to make money...they stopped being "artists" in favor of creating popular songs to make money, which GFR did do
@TheCenter54 I see your point on why you think that they're sell-outs. But, if you're as big a fan of Grand Funk Railroad as I am, you accept their later stuff with Frost. But, I do prefer to listen to On Time-Phoenix better than We're An American Band-Good Singin' Good Playin'.
@TheCenter54 Sellout? Why? Because they became successful and popular... So what... They had one big hit. That = sellout? That's a bunch of BS and that term should not be applied to GFRxR... They sold out so much that they can't get into the RnR HOF... Looked at profile, oh, now I can see who I'm talking to...LOL IMO
@txeire Not that i'm saying she should be in the rock n roll hall of fame, but the stereotypical discription for this life style is sex, drugs, and rock and roll, has a masters degree in 2 of the 3 categories.
@davidrussia The Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame is run by douchebags who apreciate Madonna and Abba more than real rock bands like Grand Funk Railroad, Kiss, Yes, and many more
I have no clue what that means Darth, but if you mean GFR kicks ass, you have no arguement here. I love this rockin song!! I'm same age as Mel, so how come I don't have the gift to make great music like this....lol

@TheCenter54 oh, and the R&R Hall of Fame has inducted Abba this year.
LOL!!
I'm still trying to think of any song Abba made that classified as rock n roll.
Grand Funk contributed more to rock n roll with one album than Abba did with any and all of their music.
The R&R hall of fame has no idea what rock n roll is anymore and should change their name. It''s embarassing

The same thing applied with Three Dog Night and Chicago, in my humble opinion.
