It did give rise to the best science fiction comedy ever made, though, Caprica--so I guess there's that. I've never laughed so hard while watching Syfy channel--but even that got old after a while. Both shows are in Hell now, where they belong.
New BSG is a pompous, poorly written pile of goat shit. The only defense its fans have are the awards it got for being the _only_ space show on TV at the time. I love Ron Moore for his Star Trek work, but this series is just the Emperor's New Clothes of space shows. There's no defending it when it comes down to the nitty gritty. It's Days of Our Lives in Space--you watch how bad the characters(I use that term LIGHTLY) can fuck up their own lives to feel better about your own.
TV crap will come and go, humanoids, but the marvel that is Harlan Ellison will be with the human species till its extinction. So he likes TV pabulum. So what. Get lives, toads.
I was there. Even though Ellison said Anthony Lawrence's story "The Man Who Was Never Born" wasn't the basis for the Terminator's plot, I think that story deserves some credit.
Anyway, this bit of Harlan's stand up was the most engaging, entertaining thing for the whole convention. I saw the William Goldman talk and the Oliver Stone talk--this segment was the best.
Battlestar Galactica is not "a revamped TV show". It is, just as Harlan said, one of the best TV shows ever, unlike the old BSG. It took the name, some basic plot premises and character names from the old show, but the 2 shoes are very, very different.
Actually, the last 3 eps of season 2 (Downloaded and the 2nd season finale) and the first 4 or 5 episodes of season 3 (the New Caprica storyline) were the best stretch of episodes in the show, and among the best TV drama ever.
The season 2 finale reaffirmed why I love the show, hour long dramas, TV, Sci-fi, etc. On BSG I can't predict what will happen next. The show is new and fresh each season. Too many shows stick to formula. I'm not watching TV to kill and hour. I want to feel like I experienced something more. BSG accomplishes that. It has never been stale. There have been misfires but those have been top drawer compared to a majority of other shows. Its OK if its not your cup of tea. I'm not attacking.
Harlan made a good point -- the NEW BSG is not the OS at all. I'm sad it's coming to an end, but I look forward to whatever Ronald D. Moore does next.
thanks for clearing that up for me. look I respect Ellison's biased feelings like the old BSG, but I disagree with him saying the New One is perfect. Nothing is perfect. Another thing, BSG is a revamp, no matter how you look at it. The irony is that retooling this show is no diffrent from Alan Moore retooling comics such as Swamp Thing, Supreme, etc and they were better.
Though I disagree with his views on Star Trek, I have always loved Harlan Ellison as a writer and just completely hilarious as a showman. As for the new BSG, I cannot get enough of it thanks to my gf! :)
If only you had any idea how common I've found the "thanks to my GF" tagline to be among male nerds. : ) The resultant opinion has a habit of changing once the GF caterpillar metamorphoses into the "EX" butterfly. : )
Well said Mr. Moore...you have truly earned it. I wished you've called your masterpiece something else other than Galactica (cause TOS will always be TOS) and I wish it were broadcast on the IFC, but it's definitely a superb show you've made for people to like me to think and cultivate.

Boy, does Mr. Ellison look old.

I'm ... I'm sorry. Harlan would never have wanted one of his fans to behave so belligerently towards others.

Moore acts like he smells a fart around Ellison. BG is just a revamped TV show; Harlan is a true modern literary legend.

Used to be. Until the season finale of season 2, when it went to shit.
Before that, it was the best SF TV show EVER.

Apparently the literary legend thinks that BSG is one of the best television series ever made. Said so him self. So what world are you living in?

I'm not good with interpreting acronyms but what do you mean when you said, "the new BSG isn't OS"?
Rodimus78 4 years ago
Rodimus78: OS or TOS = the old series. Ellison stresses how different - and how much better - the new BSG is than the 70s series with the name name.

Does anyone have the interview or know where I could see it? It seems like it would be very fun.
