My Husband and I saw this movie for the first time Mon. night (MLK JR birthday). We were just so surprised and outdone at how we as a people act. That was 30 yrs. ago, but this type of thing continues to occur. The mother was extremely mean and unfair as well as the wicked sisters.
Norma Faye: And them men don't wanna be looking at no ballet dancing no- how. They wanna see some strip tee, baby.
LOL
Billie Jean: But I get tips, mama.
Moma Rosie: Tips?! I don't care how many tips you get, Billie Jean. You better dip your ass over there some time today and get what that man owes you!
TOO FUNNY! LMAO!
And why does Billie Jean sound like the dude Earl that was JJ's art student?
I'm watching this as I type... I live in NYC and there is a place on 125th street that sales every black movie you could think of...They don't make movies like this any more.. Bravo Mr. Davis. This movie is simple but DEEP!
Louise Stubbs can sure act like a mother. Gloria Edwards, the daughter, was married to Dick Anthony Williams(Diamond's father in The Players Club). She is now deceased and is the mother of the Carl Anthony Williams, the voice of Uncle Ruckus on The Boondocks.
love love this movie...does anyone know where i can find it.....i saw it on tv one when i was in the seventh grade i'm in the 11th grade now... and still haven't found it......help anyone..
It looked like it was a good movie, but I only saw bits and pieces. Mama wasn't playin' LOL!!! Did the one with kids have a husband or where the kids out of wedlock? By coming in on the movie late, I didn't know exactly what was going on.
They dont have this particular movie on DVD or VHS because the director never signed a consent form for republication. Good movie though. My girlfriend and I love it very much but only saw it partially and never saw it again. Shame on the director and TV One.
i too, have been lookin, and lookin for this movie on dvd, but i dont think it was ever on dvd, just on vhs, a friend of mine tried to tape it on cable for me but it just wasnt the same, i saw this at the show , when it first came out in the 70s, and from this day im still searching for a copy of it, i hope to find one soon!
I caught this on cable last year. At first I thought it was going to just be another bad blaxploitation flick. Turned out to be a great surprise. Good movie
I got this movie (VHS) on e-bay's auction site and was so happy when I was the winning bidder, you should google a search for this (Black Girl 1972 Leslie Uggams) and see what options they give you as far as purchasing it
I have this movie on VHS. A classic that they don't make anymore. The directing by Ozzie Davis is superb along with the music score "Black Girl" by Betty (forget her last name but she was a blues singer from the south. This was a stageplay adaptation written by JE Franklin. Also like the part & music in the beginning when Billie Jean is dancing at the Groovy Bar & Grill
It was pretty good...a little overacting sometimes but i like how the story flowed. Her sisters were evil though. I wonder what happened to these actors??
I have been trying to get this movie on dvd for the longest time, but i dont think its available, i know that ozzie davis directed it, and ive searched and searched, but cant find it anywhere, i sure hope that it will be on dvd soon.

The local tv broadcasts channels dont put good movies like this on anymore because they are too busy trying to put on their own original programming.
