I wonder if by 'culture' he means 'western culture.' I think the culture of Cherokee tribes which embrace freedom in its truest nourish the spirit rather than suppressing its expression.
@isteemaen I very much think the same thing. I believe he was referring to culture which has come about and spread largely because of worldwide media, which were non-existent in early times. That culture which is transmitted and sold to people is the brand of culture he was most likely speaking of.
@isteemaen Being a massive Terence fan, i would bet a good amount of money that he specifically means Western culture. Terence learned REAL CULTURE when he discovered Amazonian shamans and such. I believe.
@isteemaen Indians used to kill each other off over limited territory, so they had similar problems. As well, I think aspects of modern, western culture have their advantages, like technology and free speech. I think if you could mix the world of shamanism with modern physics and computing, a lot could be accomplished.
Terence does use 'culture' in an un-usual way. I think he means social models of reality.
There are cultures which have more or less managed to integrate psychedelic/archaic experiences into the fabric of their culture (Cherokee). but the culture itself is mostly a barrier to such experiences. the experiences themselves are always trans-cultural. the culture, like you pointed out, can definitely become healthier and more wholesome however, by integrating/nourishing these visions
"better" without music I think... music has a subjective emotion to it, or we tend to attach this subjective emotion to it...whereas the Meaning w/out music presents the information more directly.
@alliant I would agree with you normally, but I actual;ly think this music goes perfectly with what he is saying. It conjures up an eeriness and melancholia which is reflective of the content of what McKenna is saying.
I think honesty makes people smart, even those who persist in folly, change is the only constant.
