I also noticed that in the scene where Akeem and Semi "dress as New Yorkers", they come out in football jackets, with Semi wearing what looks like a Jets coat, and Murphy what looks like a Giants coat (I'm not positive but it has orange sleeves and say NY on it, I am not sure if that was their logo back then maybe someone could confirm that).There are probably more little "coincidences" in this movie to bolster my theory but I don't have the desire to look for them.See My other comments below.
