What a great guy! I remember when I was 15, trying to play like him....back in 1956 and I wrote him a letter and he sent me a signed copy of "Wildwood Flower"!
One of the acknowledged masters of the instrument. Artists like Chet Atkins came around only once or twice in a generation. We are fortunate to live in a time where technology can preserve his genius for posterity. Thanks for the memories Chet! You'll be missed.
I wish I could afford a instrument like that. What a sound. Mostly, Chet didn't use Maybelle's scratch technique, and this definitely isn't it. Mostly he used the alternating base technique of the old blues men.
Even the youngsters loved Chet. Got a kick out of the young girl grinning and snapping her fingers. One guitar is all that was needed - when it was in Chet's hands.
What grace and class....Chet was the best guitarist this planet has ever known and I personally don't think we'll ever see his kind again--guess that's just how it it...love to you Chet....Jack Baker NYC
@AlwaysFairandSquare He didn't create his own technique. He used the "Carter Scratch" Technique which was created by Maybelle Carter from the Carter Family. He also wrote the song "Maybelle" in dedication to Maybelle Carter.
@AlwaysFairandSquare OH okay. I saw it in a documentary of himself. It was about country music and its roots and stuff and he popped up and said something about the carter scratch technique and then he blew my mind and I didn't see him in the movie again. But thanks for the correction (no sarcasm, just in case it came across that way).
Amazed to see how quite the stars were in awe just listenning to the master. Love how Chet at 2:12 is amazed by himself, and how Waylon laughs at 2:43 and how chet responds with a smile whilst concentrating.
I watched this video live when it was live on Tv years ago, they were honoring Roger Miller, to his wife, the funny part of it was, Chet first told Willie that he was the "greatest song writer to every be in Nashville", & Willie said "why thank you Chet, coming from you that means a lot", & then shortly later, he told Willie, "you know Willie, you never got famous until you "got ugly", ha ha .. that was our "Chet" !!! thought I heard a little "Mark Musik" in there at the beginning and end. As always, Chet is outstanding. Even had the little girl keeping time.

Agreed. He uses some of his licks from Mark music and from the song Pu Huana.
