Lego probably had your setup but realized that the technic gears are not tight enough to transfer power effectively through perpendicular gear transfers. Clicking gears are a sure sign of this problem and you might want to put spacers to achieve less gear slips.
I agreey with 5:14 about the Lego bricks shod not be thows smoth ones.
