  • You could become a sailor when your at the age of 12? Wow

  • I know that large scale models were used to make the Hornblower series and the Grand Turk was built. BUT what ship did they use for such scenes as Horatio climbing up the Starboard Gangway in the start. and also in later scenes on board H.M.S Renown??? it cant be H.M.S Rose (aka: H.M.S Surprise) or H.M.S Victory so what ship did they use for on board filming? o.o

  • this has to be the best produced TV series ever!! I wish they would do more of them!!..instead of cranking out those stupid sitcoms and reality shows!

  • @murphjy To find an interest in this kind of series, one must be at least keen at history, if not a historian in his own right. Sitcoms don't require any kind of study...

  • This particular scene of Hornblower's lack of "sea legs" links the character with Horatio Nelson Britain's greatest Sea Commander, who surprisingly suffered sea sickness all his sea faring life!

  • There is a story going around that during filming Iaon got an ear infection when he did a scene in the sea and he is now partially deaf in one ear.

  • The start is so epic...

  • Ioan Gruffud is so young here...I am watching him on Ringer now too, he is still a handsome piece of man.

  • You know what the best sound is in the entire series? Footsteps on the wooden decks.

  • @jozsefkacsa Then you are a British subject.

  • Hornblower is so awesome, does anyone where it's possible to watch it online?

  • why didnt sharpe and hornblower ever meet and fight in one episode it would have been great

  • @50TNCSA

That would have been great to watch! Much as I love Horatio and Archie, though, I'm pretty sure Sharpe and Harper would kick their asses in a punch-up!

  • Jamie Bamber's been great in tons of shows, such as Band of Brothers, Battlestar Galactica and Law and Order:UK, but he'll always be dear old Archie to me!

    Damn I love this show!

  • I'm not British(Canadian)but I love Brit TV shows!!!Here in North America ppl don't watch Brtit shows they mostly love Shows with non stop shooting, blood guts flowing it's fiucking stupid!!! My Favs are Cracker,Sharp.Looking after Jojo,Onedin Line, but Hornblower is the best.I really hope that the'll make more episodes.peace

  • no reason 4???????????????????????????? =(

  • Is the ship really called the Faggotry? lol.

  • @catalystleader He said welcome to Purgatory. The ship is called the HMS Justinian

  • dnt no if anone else noticed tht the crew were playing heart of oak when archie and horatio were going down the stairs lol

  • Very funny stuff! Alas, the English are the last people to say "You can't kill a king" -Charles I, anyone?

  • if you hear the guys fiddle whils he is on his way to the midshipmens birth hes playing heart of the oak

  • anyone been to see victory in portsmouth i been on tht ship its still gt damage from where the baucontsantce broadsided her at trafalgar shame that aint in hornblower i love hornblower and sharpe my fav chars are harper and hagman in sharpe and archie and cpt sowyer lol get the lubber of the quarterdeck

  • @dcnolan1995 Interesting! Is there a lot to see in Portsmouth in the way of nautical museums, etc? Maybe I'll put it on my trip next time. I wonder if they have a youth hostle? I'd really like to go out on one of the tall ships for a couple of nights if there's such a thing. :) Songs

  • At the beginning near the 1 minute mark, there is a two decker ship of the line, that looks real and not like a model, but as far as I know, such a replica ship does not exist today...Can someone help me with more info about this?

  • @ReiAyanami4ever Hornblower's ship, the Indefatigable, is represented by the Grand Turk, a modern replica of the sixth-rate frigate HMS Blandford, built in 1741.

  • @TheNikzaw Indefatigable was the ship of the first movies. This ship at the 1 minute mark is a two decker ship of the line, which I found out later to be most probably the replica ship Götheborg, with a painted lower gundeck . It is the largest wooden replica ship that fits the description of a 74 gun ship of a line, also a far more accurate replica than the Grand Turk, which has unfortunately serious anachronistic mistakes and was really the weak point and an eyesore in the first movies...

  • @ReiAyanami4ever I'm very much interested in the ships used in this series. So far I can't find a site/documentary about them. Do you know if any of them were old or copper bottomed? Was that done yet? I don't think so but I'm not sure. There was an episode in, "Garrow's Law" where a man testified about copper bottoms. Had no idea they did that to ships. Can't imagine a ship rotting out from under you. Was there insurance for that? Thanks for any information. :) Songs

  • @Songsmirth Documentaries about tall ships are rare, as opposed to history documentaries that include some info, although you can search for various battles, like Trafalgar and the Spanish Armada. As far as copper plating the hull of ships, this practice started in the 18th century to improve speed, maintenance reasons and also against sea worms, when in the tropics.

  • I really want more, such a same they don't make moer episodes.

I would like to tarde pirates of the caribean 4 for more of this.

  • @VivaLaTiva

He was 30 odd when he became captain - the episodes are sometimes 10 years apart but yes he looks the same in everyone lol.

  • Fantastic film.

  • @Framuga111

Its not a film - its a tv series!

  • I love this!

  • @VivaLaTiva you know its not a true story right?

  • @wellbredmongrel actually the character he is based on is infact a real character, the rear admiral hornblower who came some years after nelson, his first name wasnt horatio that was nelsons first name

  • @OW41N The story is utter fiction though. Thats the point im making, also the Indefatigable and Captain Pellew were renowned for victiories against the French.

  • @wellbredmongrel what you say there is true, i was not challenging your point i was merely stating that there was a man called hornblower who this character is based on

  • @wellbredmongrel yes completely right. Also should be mentioned that the Indefatigable was actually a much larger ship than it is protrayed in Hornblower

  • Wow, this is great!

  • There weren't supposed to be women on board HMS's

  • @baroquemusician1 They are in port and the Captain was proberly moe concerned with the fact he was dying rather then the women on board. Pellew didnt think too much of him either, so one assumes that Keene had a questionable Captaincy

  • I love the Hornblower and Sharpe series. We need more films of the both of them pronto. Before Sean and Ioan become to old to still be believable.

  • @DrMabuse2006 Best English actor and best Welsh actor respectively. And two of the best English language TV series ever, if not, in any language. Cadfael comes in at a close 3rd though. :)

  • i love the song at the beggining but cant find it anywhere, can anyone help or know its name?

  • I love Archie! He's adorable. I wish he didn't meet the end he does! He wasn't really even in the books, and he wasn't epileptic or anything

  • yeah, i know- but even if some of the (Hornblower) booklovers don't agree with Archie's new inclusion, i think he's a fantastic addition to the story, and i mean come on! he's cute! Jamie Bamber- we love you!

  • @PhantomUmbie123

My best friend is so into the Hornblower books and she agrees with me that the inclusion of Jamie Bamber as Archie is nothing but a good thing!! I way prefer him to Horatio!

  • Interesting comments here. For me, I had read the entire Hornblower series of book probably a dozen times before the TV movies ever were made. Gregory Peck was the only thing I ever needed to see to visualize the action in those books. I dont begrudge any effort to make historical fiction on film but I wish people would READ with the same interest and passion that we blog and email and IPOD. Cornwell, Forester, Pope, Kent - These guys are giants of this genre if you love history.

  • thanx dutch girl for uploading this series, have enjoyed them alot.

  • About those overcoats they're wearing, they aren't water-repellent, are they? I think rubber was not known then. So they should be completely soaked.

  • The first rubberized coat manufactured by Mackintosh was sold in 1830. Before then ,one could obtain waterproof fabric by impregnating canvas with linseed oil or tar, but it wouldn't have been suitable for clothing.

British women, who had already taken over many of the traditional jobs of men already during WW I were given the vote in 1918 provided they were over 30 and married or held a university degree.

  • Thanks a lot for the information.

  • unless they're made of wool...

  • @williamgadelha

They are oil-coats. Overcoats themselves are not water-resistant. However rain coats are. The ones officers wear are treated with oil and the oil keeps the water from soaking through.

  • Thank you very much. I was really curious about it.

  • Do not forget that wool in its natural state has a very good water-repellent ability. Second way can be for example linnen with a thin layer of wax rubbed into it.

  • Why are two women rowing to take Horatio to the ship? Shouldn't this be done by men?

  • I wonder the same. I first thought they're family but they're never seen again...

  • You know, the only reason I can imagine is that most young and healthy men were already employed in the warships. Therefore, some services had to be performed by women. Something like this happened during Worl War II.

  • He's quite old for a midshipman, dont you think?

  • I think when Hoaratio joined he was to be about 16 or 17. Read that somwhere ... wikipedia or so ... Correct me if I am wrong. Still I think it`s just Ioan who looks older ...

  • Well he actually says he is seventeen in this part ... Only the actor looks older. OR do you think 17 is quite old ?

  • Hornblower tells Maria in the 7th series, "I have no living relative", or something like that. and now, he has his father? look at 6:30.

  • if i remember later in the books his father dies

  • well thats like 10 years after this movie in their world, so he could have died

  • My favourite TV series of all time

  • I'm confused isn't this the duel?

  • thats the American title, in everywhere else uses it's British title

  • yaeh

  • Ioan Gruffud is a great actor, buthe needs a good plot-like this(have a look at him as "Mr.Fantastic" in "Fantastic four"-schrecklich!!!)Thanks for this on YT-Ienyoed the books and love this series!Too bad they never showed it on german TV-Hartelijk bedankt

  • Hornblower was not from noble birth but he had a very good education which was vital for a naval officer at the time, so he would easily learn the mathematics surrounding navigation and the practical skills of sailing a square-rigged ship. Money has no grounding in the Navy at the time, regardless of what background a man joining the Navy came from they all started out as midshipem as they had not passed their lieutenants exams and were not profficent in taking a watch unsupervised.

  • i c ..thank you for the info.

  • I know in the Army at this time, money was the way to a higher commission but what of the Royal Marines? Did they follow the Navys standards or the Armys?

  • I fell in love with these series...

btw, so in the case of Horatio he was a noble right? because his dad was a Doctor and it seems he was sent to the navy to learn how to be an officer... or not?

  • both hornblower & sharpe are the best series to ever watch

  • No, Hornblower is so much better than sharpe. in Sharpe, the French are portrayed as idiots for no reason. (and makes us wonder whether the whole thing is comedy.) They never wore white shakos, (it's historically inaccurate) Also, battle scenes are poorly done. I always get bored when watching sharpe, it's pathetic. Hornblower is SO much better.

  • that's a poor excuse lad. infact if u get bored watching sharpe then why did u bother?.....and give us thee an example of a poor battle scene from the show since you're whinging about it?

  • matt2house- I used to watch Sharpe's, now I'm so sick of it. The battle of waterloo in Sharpe, is an example of what I call pathetic. There are records of hundreds of volleys of musketfire from both the Allies and the French. in Sharpe, the French fires none, and once the Allies fire "some", they retreat. Is this "parody" or something? That's just pathetic. Cannonshots are so unrealistic. Compare "Napoleon (2002)" with Sharpe, you'll know what I'm saying.

  • That's hardly an arguement because for 1 it's a tv show, 2 it wasnt meant to be accurate to the actual battle and 3 it's all about entertainment. Think back to lotr the two towers, now then there wasnt any elves mentioned in the book at helms deep but peter jackson decided to whack em in because for one reason....ENTERTAINMENT!!!

  • it's called low budget, the sharpe series was made with hardly any money, and the books are very historically acurate.

  • they're right. the waterloo in sharpe is terrible. The whole thing is on capturing la hai-sante, and about a stupid dutch commander which didnt even exist in real life. i agree with chopinandliszt the napoleon movie battle scene is excellent.

Also, shapre got shot and cut and at least 30 times...how is he still managing to live?? they hung in in shapres enemy too!

  • Um the dutch commander that you're referring to is the prince of orange which he did infact exist in real life. And 2ndly about how sharpe manages to stay alive... again it's about entertainment and if you read the books(which all you buggers should do) you'd learn that sharpe is the main character of the entire series.

  • your rite i meant the dutch commander wasnt so stupid in real life

  • Um, actually the white shakoes are the helmet covers worn by dragoons so that thier helmets dont glint in the sun and give them away.

But Sharpe's enemies are rarely ever french, he is constantly dealing with other englishmen as the main antagonists.

Still, Hornblower is bloody good too.

  • who's Sharpe?

  • Oh, another historical fiction hero. Different series but Hornblower is one of the acknowledged influences on the author.

  • Sharpe is like Hornblower, but in the British army not the Royal Navy.

  • @Unwardil: He DOES fight the French a lot. But as he says in 'Sharpe's Rifles', "I have never liked that toast Major, I am a solider, not an assasain".

  • Is Archie dad a noble man ????

  • if his dad was noble he would be in the armie, not in the navy, and certainly not in such a low starting point. most officers in the navy were merchant's sons, while nobility joined the landforces.

  • Is that ship a 40 gunner??

  • probully much bigger, like a 64, or 74

  • Definitely a 74. Even in 1793, a 64-gun ship-of-the-line was a rarity.

  • i know, its unbelievable. it really doesn't feel that old when you watch it. seems like only yesterday it came on itv for the first time

  • Great!! I love both Hornblower and Archie!!! But Simpson is a real prat :) Archie is sooo cute :)

  • omg its Lee adama

  • This series passed me by last year, but it looks cool and i'm a big fan of the period. I might have to fork out on the box set :)

  • Isn't that captain the British agent in Sharpe?

  • yes, Michael Byrne played Major Nairn in Sharpe's Company, Enemy and Honour

  • haha no way is he 17

  • omg who is the captain? he was in sharpe as well.

  • How many episodes in the complete series??

  • Thanks deary GOLD STAR for you :) ;) thanks soo much

  • Thank you very much indeed funnyflyingdutchgirl

  • never seen this "serie", but i cant stop see it :D

  • I've seen all the Hornblower episodes so many times and I never get tired of them. Brilliant.

  • beautiful ship

  • is this the first ever episode of hornblower

  • yes

  • @TheCurtainCall there was only 8 episodes made

  • thx a lot for the upload been waiting to see this series for a LONG time.

  • I can't thank you enough for posting these! :D

  • jees...it's been 7 years since the last time i watched this!

    thanks for posting!!!

  • The first thing you can see about Archie is a big smile... Nice character!!!

  • what is a grecian?as he said "i was a grecian at school"

  • studied classics?( ancient greek and latin)

  • yeah that is right

  • It is a people that studied greek or latin

  • Thanks for uploading these! I've been wanting to see this series forever and never got around to it!

  • did he buy himself up to the rank of midshipman?

  • I don't remember if it mentions it in the books, but being the son of a doctor, I would presume so. Most members of the middle class and gentry would buy themselves a commission. However, examinations for lieutenant were rigorous and many men stayed midshipmen. Consider it to be the modern equiv. of Chief Petty Officer.

  • thanks

  • One of the best shows ever .

  • Thank you for uploading these!

  • wow, this is great. I just finished reading the first book and i was suprised when i found out they made a movie out of it. 5/5

  • Archie is my total favorite, but bush and Pellow r cool 2. GOD, archie is sooooo hot! Thansk for putin this up! I appreciate ANYTHING that has my beloved Archie in it!!!

  • haha i love archie 2 :)!

  • hey... I love Hornblower ^_____^ thanks!

  • I agree! Hornblower and Bush are two of my favorite characters in fiction.

  • no hornblower, bush and archie :P!!

  • Hey babe, really thanks, was looking for complete hornblower really hard and didn't have luck. Btw which part of serie is that? first movie of first quadrology?

Btw Hornblower and captain Pellew are best ;)

  • ENJOY!!=]]
