In our department, one man stays below as a spotter for this very thing (well, and other things). We have a 105' Pierce Aerial that has dual controls up top and down below. I would also question the placement of the bucket so close to the fire because there was no way anyone was coming or going in that window. @JohnConnor333: We are volunteers as well, trained the same way as paid fire fighters, use the same gear and should have the same SOPs.
@H2R25 You and 11 others sould read the context. The flames reached over the basket they were in. In this hot situation, the emergency stop in the basket was put in the "on"-position by accident....
Omg the guy controlling the ladder is probably down there like "Yep, he's fightin' a fire....oh dang...oh that must be hot. Wow, that sucks. OH CRAP!"
that was frustrating to watch...we had an sop that said that one man stays in the bucket at all times to avoid this problem...i understand about the 2 in 2 out rule,,, thats why we take 3 men in the bucket unless we are just putting out a trash fire ie, a fallen or fully involved building...as far as a water curtain goes, ours only worked when there was water flowing...
Boy, am I glad we don't have an emergency stop button in our ladder basket... the operator below can always take control! (Unless the "bumping sensor" is activated, but that is reset from below)
=[ The only reoson i watched this is because there was a fire down my road last night and wanted to know other fires if it was worse and this one was worse
the platform op didn't leave his truck. The Both firefighter did leave the basket and were in the building while the flashover. The operator couldnt see the basket and had to wait until both FF are back in the basket, to get them out of the fire.
If the cage controls including the emergency stop button over rides the base operators controls, then in my opinion this is a flaw in the design. The base operator is there as a "mechanism" to ensure the safety of, should anything happen to the person in the cage.
the firefighter operating the basket accidently pushed the emergency stop because the fire blew in his face and he did not see it. It took some time to figur out what the problem was before the guy operating the basket from the truck below could lower the basket...
OK - I give you that it was a comment wasn't thought out. I was thinking they should break out mashmellows since their so close and camping out over the fire and not the other meaning.
Not all departments and all situations wait for orders. Ladder guys are trained to put up ladders where needed without waiting for orders. The truck position was probably by direct order.
Fire scenes can be cluster f*cks when events happen like this.
Experience ladder men will not wait to move a ladder in this situation where a brother is in jepardy nor will IC expect that.
As far as rescue without an attack line. Modern buckets have a line at all times; Water?, that's depends.
when the building exploded, the firefighter moved away from the flames but his arm accidently hit the emergency stop button, it took some time to realise what the problem was and he had to restart the engine...
Does anyone know what caused that malfunction i cant believe that they intended to be in that position. if someone could translate the audio maybe we would know more.

@H2R25 Read the description! Emergency stop was pushed by one of the firefighters in the basket by accident!

Where the HELL is the driver operator...!!
The cage operator should never be left alone without the safety of an operator on the base controls...!
shyboy999 3 years ago
Read the description. The emergency stop was accidently pressed when they jumped into the bucket. This locked out the D/O's controls...

This is why the platform operator never leaves the truck and never takes his/her eyes off of the bucket...
