The hat thing is funny, I did get 99 lives, and didn't realize the connection with the missing hat. I thought perhaps an enemy stole it from me and I just didn't realize it, as can happen in Mario 64.

@joshgut yup, I also thought of Mario 64. I also have 99 lives and wondered why Mario waved to the player and tried to get off his hat after beating a boss... :)
