hey nice info. very solid performance all the way around. question: 24mph seems kind of slow, what does the gps say your slow flight forward speed is?

nice video. Which Avid type it is? I wanted to know the wing area of this bird. I have heard the HKS has got vibrations. How is urs when at modest speeds?
My plane is a C Model. The only time there is any issue with vibration is if I let the RPM get below 2000 RPM. As for all flight RPMs its like a sewing machine and as quiet as a ceiling fan :-) Well almost!
Looks like it performs at least as well as it would with a 582. What is your empty weight? Speedwing or STOL? On a side note where did you mount the transducer for your fuel flow gauge? I've got one sitting on my bench ready to go in my B model but having a hard time finding a place to get the trans vertical like they recommend.
I am using the same 71 by 37 prop that I used with the 582. The 582 turned it 5900-6100 rpm and the HKS turns it 5700-5900. Except for climb, all performance parameters are the same with the exception of fuel burn, reliability, and required maintenance. I was on a cross country this weekend with a 582 powered Kitfox and both planes fly the same speed at the same rpm.
My Avid is a Heavy Hauler and it weighs 560 pds empty.
My MGL fuel transducer is behind the panel at a slight angle.
Some engines yes, this engine no. 5800 RPM is max continuos without a time limit. The 1000hr TBO was established based on this. 6200 RPM is limited to 5 minutes. Most of my time is spent between 4800-5200 RPM.
Hi, I have a Rans S6 with the good old Rotax 503. Considering fitting the HKS, for reliability and much better range. What sort of climb rate and cruise speeds are you getting with the HKS? It will give me an idea as your aircraft is very similar to my Rans. Cheers
That day it was stable at 800-1000 fpm. It was a cold, between 30 and 40 degrees and that helped the performance. My Avid weighs 560 pds, me and my gear 160 pds, and 10 gallons of fuel brought the total weight that day to around 790 pds.
I have the 2.58 ratio gearbox and am using a 71 by 37 two blade wood prop.
Looks like a nice plane you have there! I've experienced the HKS engine (my instructor's plane, a FlightStar IISC) has one, and I find it quiet and smooth. My flight experience is very limited, 9.4 hrs dual instruction only, but I'm convinced I'd want an HKS in my own plane (should that occur!) Thanks for posting that!
Thanks, I really like the HKS, simple reliable and very efficient. If the engine had existed when Dean Wilson designed the plane, Im sure it would have been his engine of choice.
Hi
You know I didnt thing to look, Next time I fly it I will check it out. I will say the ground doesnt look like its moving!

5800 rpm: That's a lot of RPM for a motor, wont that hurt reliability?

Hello again
Forgot the second part of your question.
The 90 mph in the video is 5800 rpm and 4.0 GPH
The 70 mph is 5000 rpm and 2.0 GPH
The 24 mph is 4200 rpm and 1.3 GPH
Inexpensive flying!

Very very nice video and very good music, my favorite, please fly and play more again.
Your avid flyer plane is very nice.
GOOD fly and best regards from France.

Looks like a vastly superior powerplant compared to the garbage I had in my Avid, a Mosler 82X.
What kind of carb? Posa?

Hi
It has two of the Bings that are used on the Rotax 912 engines.
I am not sure the model number but they are the constant velocity altitude compensating type, not the type that are on the 2 strokes.
Yes this engine is a really good match for the drag profile of this airframe. 2 gallons per hour puts the airplane on step at about 70 mph.
Reliable, very inexpensive, and an absolute blast to fly:-)
Thanks

Hi
I wish it was. One day I hope to have a house with a driveway long enough to takeoff and land from.
Fly safe :)
