I became aware of this show when I was a kid. It was on a VHS of "Destroy all Monsters!" as one of the anime trailers; the other being "Battle Angel."
I even saw part of the first (I think) episode when it premiered on Toonami.
@Harashawful Too bad there isn't a trailer for NGE that can prepare the viewer for the mindfuck shift with the last two episodes. I saw the series in its entirety over 8 years ago and I am still at a loss for words.
@KineticRuler Evangelion as it's an absolute cult classic then watch FMA, both of these animes I would strongly recommend (be warned though, a lot of people were very angry with the ending to Evangelion. Personally I loved it but you have been warned.)
@KineticRuler I've watched both just recently and ... it's Evangelion the series + End of Evangelion. It stands far above anything I ever saw. Full Metal Alchemist is good but Evangelion is exeptional, one of it's kind. I cannot describe it any better. You just have to see it and try to understand it, really :) World would be a better place if everybody could see it just once i think :)
when i was little,i ordered a godzille movie from hollywood video and had a trailer for this and i was like *-*..now that i found out what the trailer was for im now a fan of evangelion
@crackbone117666 Funny, that's EXACTLY how I found out about NGE too. I was reaal young, rented Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters and saw this trailer along with Battle Angel Alita. Crazy what you remember huh?
Alright. This series isn't perfect, or a masterpiece, or anything like that. It's also not awful. I enjoyed it, but I don't see why everyone either loves or hates it with every fiber of their being. I guess the ending (both TV and Movie) was pretty weird, but I thought the writing was good and the animation was nice, and it made me feel for the characters and everything else that a standard anime should do, but it wasn't an artistic masterpiece, or the Citizen Kane of anime. It also wasn't an a
@TheRealBurninator Considering it has the most interpretive symbolism and hence stimulates the most thought I have ever seen in an anime, as well as utilizing a few of the highest forms of musical art at a few points in the series, as well as having animation that is not an eyesore...I cannot imagine what you would call the "Citizen Kane" of anime if not this, allowing that 95% of the bulk of anime is complete trash. Something else in the 5%, I hope.
I fav a western DVD trailer for EVA...2 weeks max and its gone. japanese could be a bit nationalistic, stiff, insecure, but aside from other good traits, they're not so greedy as FUCk to pull this down to coz' it's "theirs"
@xxxCRAZYLOVExxx 's not a movie, its a series. There is a series of 4 movies (Rebuild Of Evangelion) which is up to the second one but this trailers is for the original TV series. Just throw 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' into wiki and alll will be...well ok, most will be explained
@xxxCRAZYLOVExxx All those explosions are the sounds of people's minds being blown after being exposed to the brilliance that is EVA. This series is easily my fav anime series of all time, closely followed by Dogs, so yes, FUCK YES, it's worth watching. Just skip the last two episodes in favor of watching End of Evangelion, because they ran out of money when making the series so it's basically rehashed footage and a scrambled effort to not leave the series hanging.
@xxxCRAZYLOVExxx Ah, but see, the magic of television is that not everybody has to, or does, like it. So if you found it boring, no problem! :) Each to one's own.
I saw this a long time ago on a VHS of some movie I don't remember, and was instantly enthralled by it, and it stuck in my mind over the years. Many years later I got into anime, eventually discovered EVA, and even then it took me three viewings of the series to make the connection with this trailer, and seeing it again makes me happy because I realise that even when I was ten years old I had good taste in anime.
@GWiifanboy Well, objectively speaking it's got some problems, some of them more obvious than others. But, yes. Holy shit yes! It's my favorite anime of all time, and probably my favorite television program of all time. It's an engaging and sometimes soul crushing character study of its young Byronic heroes, framed by a deconstruction of the giant robot genre, critiquing by metaphor Japanese society and exploring the philosophy of human relations. Plus some meaningless Christian symbolism.
@NemoMentisson You, I often find this random and twisted Judeo-Christian symbolism in anime, interesting for some reason. And this is coming from an atheist.
@Achenar12 Sorry, I meant it was meaningless as religious symbolism (we have Anno and Sadamoto's word that they used Judeo-Christian symbols because they were mysterious and cool), but I didn't mean to imply that it was uninteresting, or that there aren't aspects of it that can be analyzed on a more meta level.
this anime can be loved, hated or whatever, but none can deny it's the most important serial anime in 90's, the one that ended an era in animation and opened another... denying this it's wrong, not cause "I say so", it's a fact...
@UglyGodLoki I propose that this is untrue, and that Evangelion is only the SECOND most important serial anime of the 1990s, the first being Pokemon. Which is much more widely disliked among adult audiences, but probable more influential, especially in regard to the international market.
its nothing but action scenes, it completely ignores the beuty of evangelion, when you see this you expect the show to have a lot of action when it isn't about mecha fights, its about learning to comunicate, the trailer isn't bad, it just isn't right for evangelion, the same can be said for Funimations trailer for 1.0
Actually it was about moody kids and moody people in general. If you watched Eva and all you got were "giant robots vs. aliens OMG SWEET!" then you missed the point pretty hardcore.
I think at some point people got so obsessed with the bad theology and the imagined depth of the series that they started failing to notice the forest for the trees.
Oddly enough that's both true and false. People have over-analyzed this series to death but that's not to say there isn't a lot of depth and philosophy to it.
Interestingly enough, the people who are the furthest off are the ones making all the religious comparisons. Evangelion is to Christianity what Stargate is to Egyptian mythology.
This IS a different Ode to Joy. Its tempo is much quicker than usually played. It would be nice to find this version rather than any other, though its difficult to find the full song (if one even exists). (I prefer this version over any other being played.
There is a version I have by the Beecham Choral Society and the tempo is about the same as this one. The CD is called Favorites from the classics volume 5: Beethoven.
Well you're correct about the homage. I edited this trailer when I worked at ADV long time ago. the inspiration for the edit revolved around the music, and luckily we had sound effects track as well that made it alot better. i forget where the titles originated from or if they were taken from something. But definitely one the best if not THE best trailers i ever edited. i kinda wanted the wtf is this show about aspect, its raw in your face eva energy and thats what makes it great
I first saw this trailer probably 10 or 12 years ago attached to an old Godzilla: Destroy all Monster VHS. I thought it looked so cool I went to the mall a week later and bought the first volume of the series on VHS. I've been a devout EVA fan ever since. Really amazing work.
It's been hard to find this out, but I've done my research and as best as I can tell, this is from a performance conducted by Alexander Rahbari, which is quite significant, I think.
I can't find the trailer with audio (Do you love me? Do you really love me?) anywhere. I love that trailer and yet I don't want to have to pop in Samurai X just to see it :P Anyone have a link to it?
Man, I thought I was the only person that had Destroy All Monsters! Watching this trailer made me watch Evangelion, one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life.
Same here, I remeber buying Destroy All Monsters back when I was like 10 and I saw this trailer and thats what got me into Evangelion. Thank you Godzilla for getting me into my favorite mech-anime!
