Hey, in the Health Food part I simply can't hear the timing of the bass part. I thought it was in 3/4 but I'm pretty sure it's 4/4 over 6/8 drums? Can you help me out at all? I just can't keep it going under the drums they really are a distraction :/ Cheers
@wardrobesaviour It is rather syncopated 11/16. Basically a 6/8 measure with a sixteenth note chopped off the end of it. Man, those guys could really groove in some odd meters...
Crimson and Zappa are my core - those two bands had some of the best musicians of all time!
I sat first row with Shawn Lane at a 1979 UK concert watching Alan Holdsworth, John Wetton, Eddie Jobson and Bill Bruford tear it up. I played with Shawn for about a year.
Watching you play Crinson reminds me so much of my bass player (Billy Cooper) playing this stuff.
It's a MIM P Bass, made in 2005. I yanked out the stock cheapie pick ups and installed a set of Seymour-Duncan 1/4 pounders (basslines). The other mod was a BadAss bridge. Thanks for the comment, -Bill
You never stop to amaze me! Thats a killer combination (the modified p-bass, and the Rickenbacker). P-bass for King Crimson, Rickenbacker for Rush :) -Reni
@BillyMegaWatt Yeah man. I could be your claim to fame. I would introduce you to Trey Gunn if I knew him. How is it you do not have a heart attack playing that Satanic music? i write 666-777 page essays on bass players like you, Wetton, and Sara Lee.
One of my favorites from the omnipotent, mighty King Crimson!!! Fuck yeah! "Starless & Bible Black" is one of their best albums, along with "Red", which is my personal favorite. "Larks Tongue in Aspic" is quite stunning as well. 73-74 Crimson is TOPS!!!!
Great cover! Nailed it, Wetton is such a great bass player dude!
Is there any chance i might see you cover the following track on the Starless and Bible Black album, "Lament"? I totally love the bass part in the middle, during what i like to call "the proggy part" :P
This is one of the greatest bands to ever pick up instruments...well done on your taste in music Billy...everything you cover is certainly worth revisiting/covering! And you do a killer job on everything
@BillyMegaWatt Wow! I didn't realize he played this song with a pick. How do you know that? Is there a video of it out there somewhere? Did you see him do it live?
@fionnruadh you seem so cool. an awesome observation. i build home-made devil's triangles in the woods. They get An 8-ball of pharmy Ritalin on a mirror at the apgogee (30 ft up) and a C-battery in a cypress tree at the vortex. The sex organs of these triangles are suspicious confidential informants like yourself.
was this video taken down before? i remmeber i favorited it awhile ago but then ago but then it was unavaliable for awhile , also what p bass is that?
Thanks Daniel! Coming from you that's quite a compliment. Oh, BTW, I had been thinking about getting an Electrix Repeater. After visiting your channel, now I know I'm getting one. Excellent work indeed, If I get stuck finding my way around on it I'll look you up for sure. -Bill
Thanks very much. I'm a card carrying member of S.I.T.S. (Stuck In The Seventies). I really think you're going to gain a lot of notoriety and a major list of subscribers, just wait, you'll see.
Wow... that means a LOT coming from you! I'm not so sure if too many will care about my stuff, but it is fun and I enjoy this new hobby. Rock on my friend! You are "the man" on bass.
great stuff. I love the way KC did their change ups. I'd love to hear "Electrik" but the instrumentation on that song is so out there that you might need an 8 or 12 string bass just to do it.

Saw Crimson several times with the Wetton, Cross, Fripp, and Bruford line-up. Wetton does not play this selection with a pick.

I was always amazed that Wetton could play this bass line and sing at the same time. That's why he's a musician and I'm a listener.

I don't know it just looks like that...

No, but John Wetton did all this with a pick and I had a tough time keeping up. No smoke and mirrors. Thanks.

i thought tony levin was the bassits...oh well i stand corrected then
mydog2134 2 years ago
After John Wetton he was. Or was that Trey? Damnit I can't remember.
ugmogog 2 years ago
@ugmogog John Wetton was bassist from 71 until the band split in 74.
75-80: Hiatus.
80: rebirth with Tony Levin.
94: Trey Gunn was added (not replacing Levin) to the "double trio".
Levin backed out in 2000.
Gunn was replaced by Levin in late 03.
