i first rode in these babies in 1989 when i was a Marine at Camp Pendleton and i loved riding in them even though they were 30 y/o and served in "Nam. 9 years after i was out and was living in sacramento, i was out for a walk and i heard a chopper. from the sound, i knew it was a 46 and i was right!. when i was at Pendleton, these things were flying over all of the time and that sound is something i will never forget. to me it was having a flashback in time and i love that sound they make!!!!
@Atombomb1337 Better hurry - the 46 is gone from the Navy and the Marines will be retiring theirs soon. The Seahawks and variants will be around for a couple more decades I suspect.
@kawasakikx250ff You obviously dont have any respect for aircraft that aren't made with missle capability. Its a support helicopter, it can perform many roles needed for the USMC. Its powerfull, fast and when you mount a mk17 on it...
If you are looking to be a door gunner your choices are pretty much rotary wing and the V22. They are putting a gun on the ramp of the V22. I don't think any USMC C130's mount any guns so those are your choices. If you have good grades and test well, why not fly in the Army. You could be an Apache pilot. They do at least as cool of flying in helicopters as the Marines and you don't need college to be a pilot.
@zachbdude If you enlist you pick a job and that is what you do. If you become an officer you pick a designator and then the military finds you something withing that field.
with the incredible RPM speed on those blades they are indeed timed perfectly to never hit each other no matter what the pilot does to the controls. same way as any V engine is timed .
Actually they don't turn all that fast and they also are stacked at different heights and geared together so they cannot strike each other. If you want to see a real contraption, look up the Kaman H43 or KMAX.
Actually they spin at approximately 264 rpms. They are not stacked at different heights. In fact, the tighter the rotor tip path plain the better when it comes to balanced flight. The heads are synchronized by a series of drives shafts that connect the forward and aft transmissions.
i stand corrected on the age of the 46 in my previous post! they were about 25 y/o at the time and were fun to ride in despite their age!

you always get to choose what you fly but in order to fly it you have to pass the courses to fly it.

i want to be a door gunner on a ch-46 seaknight but im not sure if i have the option to do it.
zachbdude 2 years ago
idk but i know a guy that is a door gunner on one and he said its just about the funnest thing hes ever done lol
shadowrules4 2 years ago
It's going to be a little to late to do that. The USMC is going to retire the Sea Knight around 2015.
DasEiserneKreuz1992 2 years ago
You don't choose typically, possibly if you are tops in your class you may get to choose.

man i seem thats hard you have ti like control both of the rotars one mistake BOOM
Darkwolf6612 3 years ago
the controls are exactly the same as single rotor helicopters, and they are geared together so they never hit each other.
