  • I think this adaptation is the best. The acting is brilliant.

  • I quite like Jodhi May as Anne. She isn't as brunette as I imagine A.B., but she suggests a woman with emotional depth, someone who would keep Henry guessing. (At times she seems a little surprised by her own emotions, as though she's winging it with Henry.) She reminds me of the Anne in Norah Lofts's novel "The Concubine."

  • Jodhi May is so beautiful!

  • I really liked Jodhi's performance. I thought she played a very different Anne to the one most actresses portray. She looks more like the portraits of Anne than either of the Natalies, or Helena Bonham-Carter, too. This was a low-budget but compelling

adaptation of a fascinating book. Who knows what really happened? This is just another reimagining of one of the most famous stories in English history

  • Anne:"please tell his majesty..." Mary: "I'm not an owl!"

  • serious miscasting here !!! She would have been better portraying Jane Seymour perhaps? Henry would have died of boredom before he married her !!! hahah

  • Once again, Jared Harris, ladies and gents. He is a brilliant actor! As much as I don't care for this representation of the book as a whole, his performance of Henry VIII is by far my favorite!

  • I don't really like this adaptation but neither did I like the film with Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson. It's not the best book as Philippa Gregory is not a historian and lacks the real historical essence. However I love reading the works of Alison Weir (in particular her fiction piece Elizabeth very factually based and perfectly voiced), she is a historian of course and it was a stimulating read. I recommend it to anyone who has found works such as this a little lacking.

  • this is very awkwardly directed and uncomfortable to watch.

  • "The other Boleyn girl" ?!

I think this is wrong o.o

In "The other Boleyn girl" Natalie Portman plays Anne Boleyn

  • @TokyoBlue1993 "The other boleyn girl" is a book. This clip is from the first film, based on the book. It's from 2003. The movie where Natalie Portman plays anne boleyn is made in 2008.

    :)

  • I think this version, stuck to how Henry, Anne, mostly Henry and Mary, on how they looked back in the day, I think this is the best Other Boleyn Girl" then the one with Scarlette Johanson in it!! that one was a joke!! this version is amazing, and I think they got Anne Right one, she was no Nataile Dorm and Henry did not look like Johnathan Mayers!! they were plain looking and this version is amazing.

  • @Hattaru I sort of agree they chose the right anne especially when she has her hair down at her coronation but I also thought that natalie portman and natalie dormer's portrayal of anne was fantastic and had very fine, gorgeous clothes/costumes for the period that they are set in and considering their budget for the whole film or tv series!

  • Jodhi May should have been Mary Boleyn instead. I don't like the 2008 version but I like Natalie Portman as Anne much better.

  • the garb (costumes) in this movie were atrocious! i almost felt insulted that they used such shabby work in a bbc production.

  • Wait a sec there is already a movie called "The Other Boleyn Girl" which I'm pretty sure was made in 2008 so, I'm not to sure wha this is. Which Anne is played by Natalie Portman. But, this is possibly the worst drama set in the tudor era. Also Natalie Portman is not all great either.

  • OMG! look at jodhi may at 7:31 then look at littlemisssunnydale's profile picture. Dont they look alike jodhi and anne boleyn?

  • @stardusth2o Yes they do! I totally agree with you there but the other actresses who have played anne look like her too in my opinion!

  • Jodhi May is pretty enough in her way, but isn't she totally miscast as Anne Boleyn? She is shy, awkward, walks like a camel and is totally dominated by her sister Mary. True, the movie is about the "other" Boleyn girl, but still Mary, beautiful though she may have been, couldn't hold a candle to Anne. You are prefectly right, littlemisssunnydale - this production was pure sh** and a disgrace to the BBC.

  • @lilythepink123 I agree. Its almost like the roles should be reversed.

  • @lilythepink123 Maybe but I sure as hell wouldn't kick her outta bed for eating crackers. Woman is damn fine in her own way....

  • Comment removed

  • The guy is a dead ringer for Henry in his prime. I wish he would've been casted in the remake.

  • I like this version more than the other one but I think the only thing I don't like is the shaky cam, but the whole story and acting great

  • @stargirlsusan i know me too. I think i read something about this film about it being filmed through a hand-held camera so maybe that's why the filming is rather tacky. But other than that i agree with you the acting is phenomenal.

  • yes it makes me not notice the cam as much. :)

  • This is horribly filmed.

  • jodhi may is gorgeous! She is so adorable. But i think natalie portman performance out-does all the others. her performance was so amazing and so real!

  • @stardusth2o aGREED AND THE BOOK IS SUPERB!

  • Jodhi May is the most beautiful woman in the world.

  • When she has her hair down then she's very pretty....

  • Very beautiful

  • This video only lacks one comment, and that is "BOOBS!" :p

  • they give you the thumbs down but damn that is what i thought as well!!!!!!

  • lol i see what you mean about the wors dama. i remember watching his on tv in 2003 and i didnt like it much - and prefer the natalie portman version (although it is completly different from the book). the book - i like, its just theyve got a lot of major historical facts wrong - mainly mary boleyn was the older sister not the youngest. Jobhi may is a good actress, and she could have made a good anne if the script wasnt so bad XD

  • I was surprised at how different this version was compared to the Natalie Portman one. This version is my favorite-the music and jodhi as Anne

  • Fiestyyyy shirt scene..

  • cette actrice est d' une beauté simple et naturelle rare !!!

  • I think the best performance of Anne was in the bbc series The Tudors, she's quite captivating. Watched The Other Boleyn Girl with Scarlet and Natalie last night and thought it was good, I was pleasently surprised with Scarlet's performance.

  • I think the best Anne Boleyn portrayal was in "Anne of a Thousand Days."

Natalie Portman was average, I think, compared to the brilliant performance of Genevieve Bujold or Helena Bonham Carter's very poor one.

  • I agree with Miyuuko. One of the things Anne was known for was her love of fashion and all things glamorous...no way would she be caught dead in those plain outfits

  • she seems to shy to be the anne boleyn everyone knows...only watched the begining btw

  • could you upload the execution. i judge good anne actress' by how they do the execution. so far, helena bonha carter is my avorite, but Dorothy Tutin is the best.

  • In this production, there was no execution scene. They just had the person who played Mary Boleyn say that her sister died on this day and while she is showing this they show modern day people visiting tower green. I think that they could have done so much better with this production but it probably had a low budget and a not a great script. I have to say that I was laughing a lot at the beginning when watching this production in full.

  • i think you delight in the cruelty. Then shouts OVER SHIRTS.lol. i found that funny.

  • both bad performances but anne had NO Drive or ambition or great enthusiasm. But then again both movies were based on a fictional depiction of the book by Phillippa greggory, she was writing historical FICTION.

Starkeys depictions are the best as is Eric ives anne boleyn book. But i love littlemisssunnydale for posting the good actresess who played anne and the other consorts in such movies as the bbc 1972 production with charlotte ramping and offcourse anne of a thousand days.

  • no anne was not nicknamed the "google eyes whore" have you read actual historian biographies. also the way anne was portrayed in this movie is awful, she is not a quiet lowsy mare of a woman, she is ambitous, strong willed and passionate, even Pgreggorys book showed her with more passion than this dolt of a woman who plays her

  • What's with the over acted heaving bossom? Wasn't Anne supposed to have small breasts?

  • remember that the other boleyn girl is historical ficiton and some of the events in this movie and the other american one are fiction. For an accurate portrayal read starkeys books, ives and weir even, do not expect to find a great version of anne or henry in a phillippar greggory novel turned movie because its a fictional depiction. Yes i love the books she writes but i know theyre fiction. Mary boleyn was not a heroine, she slept with king francis before henry and was not at annes execution

  • I've read Starkey, Ives, Fraser, Erickson, Denny and I know it's a work of fiction I've read the novel (or atleast as much as I could without getting annoyed by the innacuracies). I'd love to see a historical drama that didn't focus on massive clevage or atleast showed seduction and lust that isn't so physically obvious! Challenge me as a viewer to think!

  • Haha. Yeah. She did...Now it's just bugging me..

  • Same with Anne Boleyn. In paintings she seems very plain with a long face and always wondered why everyone goes on about her beautiful eyes, because i couldn't see them. Then i found the sketch by Hans Holbein, and now i can see her beautiful eyes even though they aren't the focus of the sketch. She also looks prettier, though not as pretty as others. I prefer the sketches to the paintings, so i won't call Jane 'plain' or say that Anne had nothing going for her but 'charm'

  • Whilst i never thought Jane to be the prettiest of the wives (Catherine Parr and Young Catherine of Aragon seem to be the most beautiful) I don't think Jane was that plain. I think her painting is very unflattering and in the sketch by Holbein, she looks a lot prettier. Her nose seems straighter and her eyes are bigger. Her chin doesnt seem so prominant either. I prefer to think sketches look more realistic than paintings, and so I imagine she looked more like the sketch.

  • out of all holbeins pictures, anne of cleves appears to be very attractive, as does Katherine parr and a young catherine of aragon. We will never know what they truly looked like as holbein was only a painter at best and was known to over emphasise beauty in anne of cleves, which displeased henry when anne of cleves came to england in person, she was supposed to be much different from the portrait, henry was furious at holbwein

my fave is Katherine howard, the prettiest portrait IMO by far:)

  • I quite like Jodhi as Anne. I don't know what it is about her. If the script would have been better as well as the production i could see her as a popular Anne actress.

I thought neither Anne or Jane were considered beautiful, except that Jane had the fashionable fair colouring and pale skin. Anne wasnt a stunner but she used what little she had to great effect and was charming. That's how its always come across to me. I don't find either of them that stunning from their portraits really.

  • the costumes and headpieces for Anne are WAYY to plain

  • I completely agree with your analysis of this film. Jodhi May is quite good as Anne, and it's too bad she was stuck with such a horrible adaptation of Anne's life (the same goes for Natalie Portman, who was also very good and had a perfect look).

  • I agree that she was dreadful (and I love her..so it's not like i HATE her) in The Other Boleyn Girl. She seemed - as you say - stiff, and she's AMERICAN. I don't think one of the most renowned Queen's of England should be played by anyone other than a british person....but that last part was..a little uncalled for. I think she can act. Just not in The Other Boleyn Girl..

..plus it's a horrid version of the actual story...so that's not in her favor either.

  • Whoever cast her as Anne obviously did not read Philippa's book.

  • Then that individual was incredibly fortunate :)

  • Yes, the burden of reading such an exquisite novel can be tough for a feeble brain, like that of the casting director for this film. You are utterly correct.

  • 'Exquisite' is far far too kind. Poorly written, under researched and a grossly unfair portrayal of Anne Boleyn. Worst still Gregory perceives a lot of it to be historical valid...

To be fair Gregory was involved in both this dull TV adaption and the poor film version, so the alteration of her story was done under partly her supervision.

  • @littlemisssunnydale

well, i mean, as a fiction its a good read. but very under researched I agree, but it doesnt all have to be exactly historic. :)

but i really hated the protrayal of anne boleyn..

  • exquisite!?! Not quite! It was a fun smutty bodice ripper but none of Gregory's books are exactly brain food

I hate the dialog more than the cast according to IMDB The cast spent four weeks in workshops improvising the script together with director Philippa Lowthorpe.

  • This anne boleyn would get on my nerves. the play of this girl is really poor and overacted, but still lame.

  • This women is very ugly to play Anne Boleyn.

  • Ugly ? You're a little too harsh ,don't you think ?

  • It's just Anne Boleyn in the books and other movies she was very beautiful. And I was so surprise to see this version where AB is pale and not attractive. Just my opinion. =)~

  • i so agree (in real life she was actually attractive and phillipa gregory also depicted anne as a dark beauty whereas jodhi may is the complete opposite)

  • Anne Boleyn was never considered beautiful by her contemporaries. Alluring, bewitching, captivating, yes, but not beautiful. I think Jodhi May is great as Anne.

  • Of the two sisters, Anne was considered to be plainer. That is why Mary was chosen by the family to be Henry's mistress. With her huge blonde curls and nd blue eyes. She represented Englands, blushing milk maid version of beauty, all doe eyed and empty headed. She was the complete visual opposite of Henrey's ife. Anne was bewitching in the French way. Henrey enjoyed her for her mind and captivating wit.

  • darkpoet, I thought Henry's preference for fair and submissive women ( like Jane Seymour) was because his mother, Elizabeth of York, was like that. Anne was considered plain because darkness wasn't fashionable, but her ability to enchant was remarked by many, hence was called a witch...

  • I heard that as well. Henrey was a coplicated man prone to moods and reinventions. the Tudors got it kinda of right when they showed that Henry went through fazes. Each wife represents a different stage in his life.

  • Yes, that could well be the case.Anne Boleyn seems to have been his peak sexuality partner. Cathrine Howeard made him a doting old protector, and Catherine Parr was just a nurse in his dotage, poor woman. She was shabbily treated by Seymour, too. Very unlucky lady.

  • i think u have Anne Boleyn confused with Jane Seymour (it was Jane that was considered plain never Anne)

  • Anne didn't fit the standard idea of what constituted beauty, and Jane Seymour did. Anne was nicknamed "the goggle-eyed whore." She did have loads of charm, which caused people to consider her attractive.

  • yes thankyou, you are indeed right there

she had an alluring sense of beauty, not common in the sixteenth century, jane seymour was admired for her purity, and chaste, as she was a virgin, with ample breasts and plump figure. Anne had a pretty face but was very thin and displayed that infamous "little neck" alas, this movie is based on a fictional novel of what really happnened anyway. Read starkeys six wives book and watch his documentary, its fascinating and all true ^_^

  • ur an idiot. When Anne was in france and returned to England by that time Mary (the slut)was already the king of englands mistress.

(sorry for calling u an idiot-but i get stressed out when ppl get history wrong)

  • i don't think jodhi may is great as anne! i hate to say it but she is merely atractive. Anne was Alluring, bewitching, captivating -but like henry the 8 said himself she was 'competant belle' quite beautiful.

  • Your very rude. If you can't have a friendly discussion then perhaps your better off doing this with someone else. I don't see hpw anything I said thus far could be construed as idotic.

  • me rude?????? i think not-more honest! (by the way what i met was that Jodhi May (anne boleyn) did not seem as atractive as she was described as in the book) is that not honest???

oh and not here for friendly discusions unless ppl make an intresting point

  • Interesting. What I like about this clip is it gives an idea of what it must have been like to reason with an all-powerful king who is also spoilt and immature. Anne stikes me here as having a bad case of PMS. I wonder if her jealous streaks came once a month for 5-7 days?

  • Very non-fictional. Anne was in love with another who she wanted to marry. Henry, being a perve, intervened and cast him away. Knowing he wanted her, Anne was torn between being his mistress (and being in his protection) or being abandoned. Only EVENTUALLY did she 'fall in love' with him. Possibly she was always using him for power. She was sharp and would put him down as much as flirt. Henry grew tired of her sharp remarks after they were married, assuming that a queen needed to obey her lord.

  • This whole things just looks so cheap... Also, it's quite funny how in this Anne Boleyn is taller than Henry!

  • Whaaaat the... it is an art in its own to make a film this poorly. How does Jodhi end up in this garbage? She indefinitely more talented and beautiful than this film allows her to be. I need to be a director so I can put her back in a film in which she belongs.

  • Do you have any more clips from this drama? Jodhi may is riveting.

  • I wonder at the costume team in this production! Anne was reputed to be the model of fashion and trends in the English court, yet she seems to be wearing the same dress throughout the scenes we see her in save the coronation dress.

  • They really didn't try in this; the only costume I thought was decent was Henry's. But they all appear to wear the same costume throughout and certainly they are not gaudy enough for Tudor nobility. Overall this drama lacks so much.

  • @mocachic03

Though no doubt well paid, the costume designers, should be horse whipped as the costumes are an abomination. The only production to get them correct is the 1970 "Six Wives of Henry Viii".

  • @molarmama5 Anne wore the same dress for 5 years in that production too

  • @rees276

I guess the bean counters, were worried about their precious budget.

I was referring to the style.

  • no. dont say that. shes beautiful. check out some of her more recent work. maybe youll change your mind.

  • this movie makes me cry every time i see it

  • Both versions of The Other Boleyn Girl stink, but I prefer British actors/actresses over the American ones ANY DAY!

  • i dont really like this version over all, but Jodhi did the part she was told to do very well.

  • Thank you for posting this video. Actually someone used to post this drama on youtube. Unfortunately, she lost some of the part due to her computer problem and I could not see whole story...I really liked this drama.(maybe better than HBO Tudors) I hope someday I can see the entire drama!

  • Hate to say it. But I'm not impressed. I thought the acting was unimpressive and the production values, while not crap, was extremely mediocre. This series probably covered more stuff than the movie, but at least we had some stellar acting in the recent movie.

  • And thanks for showing me that it wasn't a problem with my TV lol--the film really is that weirdly overlit in some scenes!

As for the shirt thing, I always thought Anne was overreacting a bit....but I guess she thought no nicety could be granted or allowed to Catherine while the process was going on....

  • Thnx for posting--I've been wanting to watch this again since someone told me they thought it was great and better than the recent movie, but now I see that it's as god-awful as I remembered, and certainly not anywhere near as good as the film! Nor is it any closer to the book than the recent film...IMO May makes an awful Anne anyway, even if she's usually a good actress....I actually think Portman was better as far as portraying the Anne we see in the novel! 1 of the worst indeed...

  • I never thought Id say this but I liked this version even with its shoestring budget & annoying talking directly to the camera like a reality show better than the Hollywood version It seems neither film maker bothered to read the book They had so much to work with & this weak soapy rubbish was the best either party could do

  • oh man this drama seems really pants, i agree with u misssunnydale its not very good is it?

there dont seem to be any atmosphere or chemistry it reminds me of something someone has put together in someone's garage lmao

  • Interesting... I was curious to see how this movie went, in contrast to the newest film (which was also something of a disaster.) I love the novel, but it's purely entertainment, certainly not historically accurate. Thank you for posting all of these Tudor videos, I'm really enjoying it. :)
