April, I agree with you about wearing a head scarf when working out. There's no way I'm sweating my hair out at the gym. What's the difference between wearing a baseball cap and a head scarf? It sounds like someone complained and the young men felt he had to say something. But don't let this keep you from staying focused with your fitness goals.

What you experienced is an example of un fair privledge, Im sure that the guy didn't even realize how offensive his actions as well as their so called "rule" is. I have only seen one group of people wear ball caps to the gym (the majority), and I have only seen people that are outside of that ball cap group wear scarfs, bandanas, and wraps on their heads (minorities). Ball caps are allowed whereas the latter is not allowed. Its unfortunate but rules like these are everywhere in American culture.
Certain rules/guidelines like that are in most in public places and they are written in a way to keep certain people out. When an administration starts a business they already have in mind what "types" of people they want to cater to and those that they dont want or care for their business they make it known by making up such discriminatory rules/guidelines. They dont deserve your money, no body should have to feel the way you did while working out. You should write to their corporate office!!

I called a few Planet Fitness gyms to see what was up with their rules pertaining to head gear and ur right they do not allow head scarfs durags or bandanas. I asked the gentleman I was speaking to what type of people wear durags? He did not know how to answer but told me the rules came from the corperate end. I asked him if I was Muslim it would be allowed? he replied yes it would b Girl I live in Montreal Canada and yes racism exists here too, but I rock my bandana in the gym daily.
I don't think I would have signed up there due to the "skull cap, bandana, doo rag" rules. I think that black people predominantly wear those, so those rules are directed at us. I think it is unfair to tell people what they can and can not wear on their heads when they come to the gym.
I think it was stereotype since they never said anything before. Does your husband may have a xbox360 or nintendo wii. They have lots of dance and exercise games to do. I do sometimes with my kids. That exact thing happened to me the other day also. When I go to Planet Fitness, I usually wear a bandana or scarf with my hoodie over it. However, on that particular day I simply had a sweatshirt on and like you April, nothing was said to me at the front desk. About an hour later I was told it was the gym's policy that only baseball caps and sweatbands can be worn. I definitely kept it on but there were signs that enforced the policy around the gym. What can I say, You get what you pay for.

I feel you. I had the same issue @ the PF in Rochester,Ny. I was with my daughter as well and checked in I had on my bonnet and my daughter had on her headscarf like yours.Chic at the desk said the same thing to us. I advised her that I did not care and at the other locations they never say anything and all the chics wear the scarfs. My daughter and I completed our workout and now I am withdrawing my membership with them. I dont see how its offensive its NOT GANG related its just a Headscarf.

In clinicals they tried to play that with me but told them I cover my head for religious reasons and if they have a problem with that we can get a legal case started. And if I cover my head on Mondays and wear it out on Tuesdays that's between my and whoever I worship (assuming I covered my hear for religious reasons) Just like everyone picks and chooses which sins they are going to do for the day I pick and choose when I want to cover. April, I think ur overeacting...if its company ploicy then you must comply or go somewhere else. I work in a similar setting and although it is unfair to single someone out as managers, floor attendents or whomever it is our jobs to enforce the rules. He may have seen you before with the scarf and let it go but on that particular day someone could have complained to the managers, not about you personally but about some members not following the rules and decided to start with you. Let it go.

April, I agree with you about wearing a head scarf when working out. There's no way I'm sweating my hair out at the gym. What's the difference between wearing a baseball cap and a head scarf? It sounds like someone complained and the young men felt he had to say something. But don't let this keep you from staying focused with your fitness goals.

What you experienced is an example of un fair privledge, Im sure that the guy didn't even realize how offensive his actions as well as their so called "rule" is. I have only seen one group of people wear ball caps to the gym (the majority), and I have only seen people that are outside of that ball cap group wear scarfs, bandanas, and wraps on their heads (minorities). Ball caps are allowed whereas the latter is not allowed. Its unfortunate but rules like these are everywhere in American culture.

Certain rules/guidelines like that are in most in public places and they are written in a way to keep certain people out. When an administration starts a business they already have in mind what "types" of people they want to cater to and those that they dont want or care for their business they make it known by making up such discriminatory rules/guidelines. They dont deserve your money, no body should have to feel the way you did while working out. You should write to their corporate office!!

I called a few Planet Fitness gyms to see what was up with their rules pertaining to head gear and ur right they do not allow head scarfs durags or bandanas. I asked the gentleman I was speaking to what type of people wear durags? He did not know how to answer but told me the rules came from the corperate end. I asked him if I was Muslim it would be allowed? he replied yes it would b Girl I live in Montreal Canada and yes racism exists here too, but I rock my bandana in the gym daily.

I don't think I would have signed up there due to the "skull cap, bandana, doo rag" rules. I think that black people predominantly wear those, so those rules are directed at us. I think it is unfair to tell people what they can and can not wear on their heads when they come to the gym.

I think it was stereotype since they never said anything before. Does your husband may have a xbox360 or nintendo wii. They have lots of dance and exercise games to do. I do sometimes with my kids. And yes it does work you out. Plus it saves you money to work out at home. Anyway keep doing what you do and dont worry about those stupid ass ppl. Dont get stressed or worked out over them. That exact thing happened to me the other day also. When I go to Planet Fitness, I usually wear a bandana or scarf with my hoodie over it. However, on that particular day I simply had a sweatshirt on and like you April, nothing was said to me at the front desk. About an hour later I was told it was the gym's policy that only baseball caps and sweatbands can be worn. I definitely kept it on but there were signs that enforced the policy around the gym. What can I say, You get what you pay for.

I feel you. I had the same issue @ the PF in Rochester,Ny. I was with my daughter as well and checked in I had on my bonnet and my daughter had on her headscarf like yours.Chic at the desk said the same thing to us. I advised her that I did not care and at the other locations they never say anything and all the chics wear the scarfs. My daughter and I completed our workout and now I am withdrawing my membership with them. I dont see how its offensive its NOT GANG related its just a Headscarf.

In clinicals they tried to play that with me but told them I cover my head for religious reasons and if they have a problem with that we can get a legal case started. And if I cover my head on Mondays and wear it out on Tuesdays that's between my and whoever I worship (assuming I covered my hear for religious reasons) Just like everyone picks and chooses which sins they are going to do for the day I pick and choose when I want to cover. April, I think ur overeacting...if its company ploicy then you must comply or go somewhere else. I work in a similar setting and although it is unfair to single someone out as managers, floor attendents or whomever it is our jobs to enforce the rules. He may have seen you before with the scarf and let it go but on that particular day someone could have complained to the managers, not about you personally but about some members not following the rules and decided to start with you. Let it go.

We live in a white supremist, patriarchal culture that continues to mess with folks even if we somehow managed to elect a black man to be POTUS. Too many of us folks of color walk around with a barely suppressed rage, due to the almost daily indignities we have to deal with

i know. Im 15 and live in a very closed minded town. the white people who live here are rich and the black people who live here aren't. they live low class. but all the white people seem to think its pretty equeal and racism doesnt exist anymore. they are ignorant and nieve. I was just having this conversation earlier today with two friends, one is indian and the other is cuban. its sad. & i tell u what, ever since obama became president, black people have been hated more than b4.

I you ever get the chance to see Ethnic Notions a creative documentary by Marlon Riggs, you will see how racist stereotypes come out of a social historical context over the centuries in the USA and are re-inscribed in cultural production like TV and Film. I ask my students to think about just who profits from its continuation.

"she's probably gang related", the world is starting to expose their racist tendecies. I'm seeing it more and more lately. Such a damn shame! Girl you pay your gym membership, probably before they do, so you should be able to rock your scarf unless they would like to pay for you to get your hair done!
