  • I would rather die with the animals in this world, than live with the ones in heaven.

  • Truly inspiring!! Wonderful!! =)

Can someone tell me what biochemical mechanism we see at about 0:32 ? Thank you in advance.

  • @spinolex pretty sure it's Transcription (producing DNA strand copies)

  • @beresford00 I just found out that its Replication. But thanks anyway. I found the original video: watch?v=bee6PWUgPo8&feature=relmfu

  • @spinolex DNA replication - the long and short chains are being generated in a different fashion because our 2 strands run anti-parallel to one another

  • @spinolex it's Translation. RNA polymerase translates the RNA strand into sequences of amino acids the building blocks of proteins and Life. Don't worry high school biology does not go extremely in depth to actually to show how Translation functions.

  • Thats the reason why i live without worries!

  • This is the greatest 480p I have ever seen

  • This words are so touching, they can easily make you cry and feel privileged and unique at the same time. It seems prof. Dawkins has found the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. Prof. Dawkins, I bow to thee!

  • Beautiful.

  • I'm an atheist but I do have my mind open to the concept of re-inception of my consciousness (less religious sounding way of putting it). I mean think of all the events that occurred before my life and how if just one of the countless things went different I wouldn't be alive. The odds of me being here seems too unlikely to be a coincidence. Simply cause we don't see reason for life after death doesn't mean its not possible.

What if time is looped? bt either way a life without god is beautiful!

  • And why can i comment 500 characters here and in the new crappy videos only 200?

Is youtube really that backwards about the possibility of knowledge that youtube has to offer.

I know they make more money with the idiots that watch dumb "funny" videos and the idiots who spam music videos.

But seriously, this place could be as much for knowledge as wikipedia is, and instead they shove crap down our throats.

  • @Jamsessionroom1337 I disagree, youtube is a breeding ground for subjective commentating, the word cap might deter the trolls. The only objective information we can rarely trust is the sort of thing you'd find using google scholar (i'd definitely recommend it!)

  • The purpose of life in 4 minutes.Amazing.

  • @lk3hjduio How so?

  • @lk3hjduio You sir are the fool.

  • "Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara." GREAT QUOTE !! Cheers to everyone that was born and lived !! Earth for life, I love this little spherical rock. !!

  • This planet is amazing & I feel so lucky to get to enjoy it. I make my home in the country in the shadow of the mountians & often am blown away by the beauty of the nature that surrounds me. I know that there are even more stunning natural wonders in the world. I only hope I get the chance to see them in life & not through a computer.

  • mind = blown

  • some people do not try to accumulate knowledge, if fact they deny it and this is the source of thier ignorance, i know i am going to die, but i dont wont to die with ignorance.

i want to embrace the world and all the great things that it has, i want TO LIVE.

  • I dont think that picture is newton

  • Who said that science lacks spirituality? This is rational and yet spiritual. Our connection with other organisms through this amazing path of evolution, our luckiness to be alive and conscious., with no fear of punishment by a highly improbable God. This little single life deserves to be enjoyed and make others to enjoy it too. Thanks Professor Dawkins. Your words are a candle in the dark.

  • We are lucky to be alive, and even more lucky to have a computer to watch and understand the deep meaning of this. Because honestly, everyday you get to open your eyes, is a good day.

  • a feel this gave me

  • "For, we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written; "As I live says the Lord, Every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God". So then each of us shall give account of himself to God. Therefore, let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this"

    Romans 14: 10-13

  • @allcreditdue You can do that if you want, but you would be a fool of an atheist.

I would rather find the author, meet him if possible or at least identify him and then give him credit. But what I would never do is stand there like a blimp and say the painting was not painted by anyone, it evolved itself.

    What a chop.

  • "A young man who wishes to remain a sound Atheist cannot be too careful of his reading." C S. Lewis

  • @Zwemer100 naaah, that's the case for creationists.

  • Look at all those stars, planets, a rounded earth, an endless sky, and an earth full of depth and meaning, evil and good, complexity, beauty, love, compassion, words, voices and 7 billion people who are not every one of them identical.

That's pretty amazing to have come from nothing. Maybe next time I go to an art gallery, I might invent a theory to claim that the painter didn't paint it and the clay made its own pottery? I might even get followers and call them evolutionists of art.

  • @Zwemer100 Is the image of zebras being strangled to death by lions, slowly and agonisingly "pretty amazing to have come from nothing" ? Is the image of a disformed child being born and dying minutes after birth "pretty amazing" ? Is the fact that every place in the Universe except certain places on Earth would kill us instantly if we could be there "pretty amazing"?Don't ruin this wonderful video with your nonsense please.

  • @Zwemer100 If you can identify a process by which paintings can arise from nothing, feel free to do so. The reality that underpins all that we can see is so much more beautiful than the mythologies invented thousands of years ago by understandably ignorant men. It breaks my heart that billions of people alive today will never be able to feel the honest wonder of being part of this vast, beautiful system because they cannot detatch themselves from ancient dogma.

  • @Sostratos On the contrary, it breaks my heart that many people cannot detach themselves from a modern and very inconsistent, intellectually dishonest and surprisingly shallow atheist dogma.

  • @Zwemer100 At least now I know you're a troll. Either that, or you don't know what intellectual dishonesty, shallowness, or dogma are.

  • @Sostratos In 2005 a survey was published in the Prospect magazine on the God Delusion. "Its reviewer was shocked at this 'incurious, dogmatic, rambling, and self-contradictory book. The title of the review? 'Dawkins the dogmatist".

Alister McGrath. The Dawkins Delusion. Introduction. Page xi.

I assure you, I know all too well what intellectual dishonesty is and Richard Dawkins is a prime example of it.

"The God delusion makes me embarrassed to be an atheist" Michael Ruse. FSU

  • @Zwemer100 You're not doing much to make me rethink my earlier assessment. If you aren't just a troll, I am sorry that your faith is so fragile that it cannot survive an encounter with reality.

  • @Zwemer100 A painting is not a living biological organism that reproduces little baby paintings, passing on it's image, but with just a few details or colors changed.

  • @FreeeeS Cantique de Jean Racine - Faure -

  • @FreeeeS The piece is Cantique de Jean Racine by Gabriel Fauré. Ironically, a very religious, albeit beautiful, piece of music.

  • @FreeeeS the classical piece playing is called Cantique de Jean Racine (Canticle of Jean Racine) composed by Gabriel Faure.

  • @FreeeeS Cantique de Jean Racine - ironically a strongly Christian piece

  • Scientists are cold, calculating and cynical? According to fanatic funded mass media, yes.

  • I think this video will make you reflect on life, make you reflect on all the minor details we consider different like sexual oritentation, religion, race, body structures, ideologies or whatever it is that will cause bigitory. What are the odds that life will ever come up like this again? what are the odds that it will be a success? We are lucky to be able to get a ticket to the circus either box seats or bleachers.

  • @Antdog5 it makes me refelct on nature and want to exsplore it as for my life the streets of canada make me reflect on my life. cold, night, streets in canda truly will have you thinking about your life, just imagine trying to survive in the cold without having any warm tmeperater around to comfort you, it can't be done there fore you think about your life.

  • then whats the point, we may as well just watch tv , smoke , drink and wait for death

  • @dan11009 The point is to pass your genes down so as a part of yourself lives on. It's not all about reproduction. A part of your character is also mimicked by your closest relatives. Some bio cultural characteristics of you will live on

  • @TemplarX2 Yea but if im dead i wont care if my great great grandson acts abit like me!!!

  • @dan11009 And living your full life span is not good enough? Believing in a fairies and the afterlife s a better option than living this life? Do you know how many versions of the afterlife there are? What make you think yours is true?

  • @TemplarX2 i never mentioned an afterlife :S

  • @TemplarX2 Reproduction is meaningless as far a atheism goes. And in this horrible existence demonstrates that even further.

  • @Tetzukai Atheism has nothing to do with the importance of reproduction but a lack of belief in a deity and superstition.

  • @TemplarX2 But philosophically, why not? There's no reason to replicate a DNA molecule or a cosmic mechine. The only reasons are based on theism and metaphysics. Atheism, philosophically should be more than just denouncing a deity, even though it's going to relate to things like nihilism.

  • @Tetzukai I understand the importance of reproduction and I'm an agnostic. So your point is really moot. DNA reproduction is a form of immortality.

  • @TemplarX2 A theistic agnostic, it seems. No, it isn't moot especially on Earth, but hey you're an agnostic. Is God telling you to reproduce? No, generally a DNA molecule is for no apparent reason even in a messy enviroment like this and for you to use a theistic word like immortality, yeah right.

  • There can be a catatraphic circumstance and everyone will be dead so that's relative and a pretty useless term, most humans live in places not even worth to exist in, you as an individual will simply die, and there is no evidence of an intelligent creator. Reproduction leads to no where. We're not immortals if you're implying it - we're nothing but a complex form of a single cell and matter.

  • @Tetzukai You really don't understand the power of DNA. It is a formed of selective intelligence by itself. Through billions of recombination over millions of years, consciousness, intelligence arises. Mother nature truly exists and is the closest you'll get to a God. DNA has one purpose and one purpose only to spread itself beyond even planetary boundaries. We all have the potential to become gods. With tech, one day we'll relocate planets. The nature of DNA?RNA give it a purpose.

  • @TemplarX2 Power - another theistic word. "It has power and therefore we must do it," nope, not an intelligent explanation for why we need to. DNA isn't just a form of intelligence. Philosophically, DNA it isn't sentient but intelligence made humans better in their circumstancial enviroment because of evolution.

  • That's why some species who seem to haven't developed an intellect like our, even some mammals because they didn't need it generally in their type of enviroment. Intelligence is relative to evolution.

It's just a tool and most humans haven't been using it much since we acquired it.

  • The merit is has between reproduction because it is intellect that can stop it reasons why anti-natalism, the condom or and other types of birth control exists and other thing that moots it's reason to exist - through lour intellect. Demonstrating more that life is unintelligently designed and therefore it's unreasonable to continue the mechine. You going to think that it's a way to control the enviroment?

  • Somewhat, but intelligence could just end reproduction completely if humans were not such idiotic animals making that a dangerous selection for reproduction. Even if we have intellect, we're still stuck in the game. Power is a relative word, especially when an organism is biologically stuck in it's selected enviroment for billions of years.

  • "Mother nature truly exists and is the closest you'll get to a God."

Which proves, if one exists that he's a sadist and evil. And Earth's theism and sense of purpose means nothing to that in that context.

"DNA has one purpose and one purpose only to spread itself beyond even planetary boundaries."

And you don't have metaphysical evidence we we need to, since you're in doubt of a God.

  • "With tech, one day we'll relocate planets."

Maybe not seeing how retarded must humans are. Maybe we'll be all dead and even so, most likely the rich can afford it.

"We all have the potential to become gods."

More theism, I am doubting you're an agnostic. We're not gods, we're complexed forms of DNA and ultimately energy that has no apparent ultimate purpose because it's ignorasnt and has no conscious or sentience. It means nothing.

  • For an agnostic, you sure are quick to bounce to theism in porder to give purpose to your existence, which is just the same dribble. An agonostic would stop and question and use science to explain existence because agnostiism isn't a conclusion. Atheism and theism and such are. And I think you reached a conclusion to theism. As an agnostic, you don't know a God exist or not and you should talk about things like this and not to a conclusion.

  • @Tetzukai It is intelligent if you take the time parameter and every single living organism all together into the equation. DNA and the mechanisms behind its replication is basically a super computer. It can express itself into a conscious form. I'm not being religious! I'm agnostic ffs! You know there are mind boggling theories out there such as chaos theory. What seems chaotic actually has a pattern to it. I'm not saying God created it! It's mathematical. Worm, human, same thing.

  • @TemplarX2 If you're an agnostic, in the least bit, you shouldn't conclude that to be reasonable and not use such words that you're not sure of as an agnostic. Whether a God is involved or not that isn't an intelligent reason to do it and be controlled by a stupid DNA molecule, especially obvious factors I mentioned.

  • It's a meaningless equation that doesn't have to exist and there's nothing intellectually apparent to pursue it. The "mathamatics" is already there - we know what we are and where life isn't in terms of theism and the only thing that matters are sentience and intellect in general.

  • Where's your proof that a DNA molecule has a sentient conscious and it's intelligent, where's your proof that the DNA molecule has a reasonable purpose, pove that intelligent design exists if you're going to refer to it as a super computer and show how intelligence isn't capable of breaking that reproductive cycle completely. Intelligence can do more than just break that cycle.

  • You seem to be claiming or implying there's more to life than consumption, reproduction, sadism, and addiction and that their something of merit in it which is an hypocrisy. You'll only find that in theism. It's a mechine that doesn't know right or wrong, dumb or intelligent, not a conscious. You as a sentient organism that is intelligent enough to be aware and to feel isn't a mechine.

  • @dan11009 if you truly think that is the best way to spend your life, certainly, but something tells me if you examine this you won't agree with that yourself. :)

  • beautifull :)

  • What about abortion, those little babies killed in the womb? Why does he not mention them?

  • @Zwemer100 I know thats a double standard lol good point lol hahaha, your smart man you caught him, nice work.

  • @Zwemer100 Because they're not sentient during that time?

  • This is not depressing at all :P

  • Does anyone know where the animation of a DNA replication fork at 0:30 comes from? It's pretty cool.

  • Most people are never going to die , because they are never going to be born ! :D

Mixing science and philosophical questions is retarded for starters if someone wants to make a point about something pointless

  • @xaxoxaxi The "point" of this video is to raise much-needed awareness as to our almost hopeless insignificance, and yet the awesome, eloquent, beautiful machinery of a product forged through conditions met through absolutely absurd, astronomical odds -- complex life as we know it.

Humanity is so laughably arrogant and self-important, and so saddeningly concerned with such petty, trivial affairs. Many, many more people ought to recognize this, and that's what this video is for.

  • @xaxoxaxi

Please acquire some intelligence and only then try to make a valid point on this video.

  • @JDvzs so you think you are very clever when you watch stupid shit like that ?!

this is video is for people who are with IQ no more than 100 who will watch it and say

"DUH ! ME SO SMART ME GETZ IT! OH SM1 SAYN SMTH ME DONT LIKE HE STUPID"

    :D hahaha pathetic

  • @xaxoxaxi

I feel really, REALLY sorry for you man.

  • @JDvzs I dont know why I even try the hard way with you scumbags ... I hope your parents die in front of you ... also I want to dig up your father after that and fuck him then clone your little sister so I can hang her on her guts 1 more time while I am recording it so I can watch it an masturbate to it later .

Respond to me now , mother fucker , please !

  • @xaxoxaxi

You truly be a sad specimen. You have my feelings bro

  • we will never die.

  • Does it make me a pussy if I cried?

  • @sc077tube no it makes you a scientist

  • Science is indeed the poetry of reality, and much more so with people like Richard Dawkins writing books. <3

  • @Voltarenizer Why's that?

  • @Voltarenizer FUCK U DEANLEYSEN IS A GOD

  • @DeanLeysen ye true

  • Does anyone know the title of the background music?

  • @skittlesvsmnms Cantique de Jean Racine

  • Just beautiful.

  • I watched this video to be cheered up... then I heard about Hitchens... :(

  • RD - We are going to need you more than ever now

  • This is the perfect sentiment upon hearing of the news of the death of Christopher Hitchens.

  • R.I.P. Hitch :(

  • Christopher Hitchens, 1949-2011

  • A beautiful sentiment indeed.

  • Richard is very smart, and the story he told is true. However, the defining part of the "moral" of the story can be taken two ways. One, that we arrived here only with luck. Two, that we were "put" here either divines or aliens. (I can't believe history channel made aliens mainstream)

I wish we could put a number on luck. The chances for a useable amino acid to form (given all the needed particles are present in a single spot) is 1/(10^72), or 1 with 72 zeros after it. A Trillion has 9 zeros.

  • The name of the song please?

  • @KKCvids It's Gabriel Fauré's "Cantique de Jean Racine".

  • What's the music in the background?

  • Comment removed

  • What's the music?

  • I've got a terrible feeling the background music is religious lyric.

  • The truth about HELL in the bible- ECCLESIASTES 9:5-6"For the living know they will die,but the dead know nothing;they have no further reward, and even the memory is forgotten. Their love, hate and jealously have vanished;never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun." Verse 10 "Whatever your hand finds to do,do it with all your might for in the grave there's no working, planning, knowledge, nor wisdom." LOOK IT UP!

  • Beautiful. This book just moved to the top of my reading list.

  • WE ARE GOING TO DIE... so make your of life a wonderful experience... dont waste time in stupid things that you may regret in the near future... earn the highest form of happines posible for you IN THE SHORT TIME BEFORE YOUR EYES CLOSE FOREVER

  • This is such an inspirational video. Only when we give some serious thoughts about death, can we really grasp the meaning of life, the inner-felt gratitude for being created in such a way that we are able to perceive, think and experience. It's a shame that in modern society we have been literally locked up in our own steal and concrete prison, out of touch with the beauty of nature.

  • It's funny how someone like me, who has a huge fear of death can simply watch a video like this to remind themselves how special life is and how worrying about death is so pointless. Thank you.

  • What's the song playing in the background?

  • I almost cried when I read the first chapter of "Unweaving the Rainbow" nothing like it :)

  • Let facts be facts and theories be theories. Stop mixing them together

  • Where can I get this on dvd?

  • Ironic that his followers are ok with abortion. And there were some of his same sort that murdered so many in the 20th Century. I guess they were clearing the way for some more of their own. They got tired of the ones who were here already. Dawkins likes to hear his own words rattle between his ears.

  • @staffsgt7 yes and i quess all the people that were murdered in the dark ages were just clearing the way for more christians good job thats why they call it the dark ages.

  • 15 people are dead -_-

  • This is poetry... the poetry of life !

  • One of my favorite videos. I agree with Xinfinitude.

  • I watch this video whenever I'm feeling down.

  • Is this guy really camp or just english?

  • @jamesbensonphillips Just English. He does have a very distinctive voice.

  • Some people could interpret this as divine blessing. But we are simply the inhabitants of a planet of which 1/3 will kill us.

  • Yes this is by Dawkins, now can we appreciate his words rather than talk about stupid youtube debates?

  • a church choral underlying dawkins, classy

  • The Magic of Reality. True.

  • someone needs to put music to this like the sagan series

  • @sinedeocodex

I'm guessing your hand didn't stop moving.

  • Reddit sent me

  • Reddit brought me here! derp!

  • @GodisTruthseekTruth which GOD?

  • @GodisTruthseekTruth You sorta missed the point there at the end, huh?

Let me paraphrase: The reason we're here, on a planet well-suited to us is because we evolved to be well suited to it. By the same token, nine-tenths of the earth or more are utterly uninhabitable by humanity, and yet in almost every corner we find something living there.

Hot springs. Glaciers. The deep sea. Even upon the very clouds. Other creatures live there because they evolved to; simple natural selection at work.

  • It just needs the Dead Island theme playing in the background, then... onions.

  • I love life. Kiss me.

  • Every single person in the world needs to hear this

  • Hey, whats this animation of travel from far universe to solar system? I once saw it full on yt, but I cannot find it anymore. Anyone??

  • @GuyWithKohones It's from the movie "Contact" from 1997.This is the starting scene but ran backwards. In the movie you start off from Earth and move away from it but here whoever made the video ran it backwards so that it seem you are traveeling towards our planet. You can notice that when you see the blue galaxy spinning in the wrong direction.

  • There is no such thing as never actualized potential.

  • How beautiful and how true. Prof Dawkins' understanding of the reality of life and existence, based on what we humans have so far discovered through empirical observation and scientific endeavour for knowing the truth, will always move those who have the capacity to think and feel.

  • @Forthright1 So true. Waken up to this no matter how hold in life makes you feel born again.

  • It's heaven on earth

  • My fiancee was going to kill himself until i showed him this video, this video made him reconsider the gift of life...

  • My uncle had a massive heart attack this morning, and his lungs are filling with fluid. He probably won't survive through the night. These words, which I've heard so many times before, have brought me immense comfort during a time when I am losing one of the greatest men I have ever known. Thank you saganesq for posting this, and thank you Richard Dawkins for your inspiring words.

  • @QuantumMadcow :Feeling sorry for you! :(
