Pretty stupid they didn't have triple-redundant safety shut-off. The gov't needs to focus more on safety and less on prostitutes and parties (i.e., Bureau of Mines.) Just like wall street/Madoff thing - why were people not PUT IN JAIL for gross negligence? Harry Markopolos REPEATEDLY told the SEC over a 9 year period it was a scam. They did nothing. We need to stand up to these a-holes in our gov't and get back to honesty and integrity in the things we do. No, it's not DICK CHENEY's fault.
I like the part "if not now, when?" Seriously, I can't take the excuse "oh no we can't do it becuase our economy is in the shitter." It doesn't matter. We need to do it. We've been promised a reduced dependence on oil for 30 years now. And through times of surplus and deficit, the people in power have buckled under the pressure.
hanegake, that is one of the things this young man points out. This kind of thing is what our National Guard should be doing instead of serving as a work-around draft because the armed forces can't recruit enough bodies to send overseas. I applaud the vets who are standing up and speaking out about the truth of what we as a nation are doing. People who complain about costs of developing clean energy: oil, coal, and nuclear have been subsidized from day one.

I would consider companies that behave like BP (and Monsanto, Wal*Mart, DIck Cheney, Plum Creek, or any other that puts profits before people's safety and the environment) to be an enemy of America.
BP should hire all the unemployed people in America pay them a lot of money to help clean up and turn the country around!!!! Betcha a lot of people would take the job!!!!!!
SOUNDS good. So if cutting our energy dependence on earl er, oil, is such a boffo idea, how come no one has done it yet, especially on a commercial scale??? BTW, are those windmills direct drive to their generators? If not, you should go listen to the noise polution a whole hill side of them make.
Take this to the bank: If you can figure out a solution (not a whine- a solution) as workable as oil, the world will beat a path, with checkbooks open, to your door.
Fantastic ad - I think it really hits home and it makes an excellent point. Energy is a root problem and we need to hit at it instead of fighting all the symptomatic problems.
@gregkauf1987 please google nikola teslas wireless energy system! this would solve most of the problems we face right now and in the future!it allows america to become energy independent and spread the freedoms world wide allowing the freedom of energy in america along with our values.please i even put up information to show how a wireless energy system work,it is not radio! please we need to learn now and start tommorow!its up to us as free americans to know about wireless power for the future
Approximately 100 years ago, virtually NONE of the US had electricity. We used things like candles and whale oil for lighting which was, "good enough." And then came the debate about whether we should build a nationwide electrical grid. "Candles and whale oil have been good enough for centuries. Why would we want to look to the future and move toward this new-fangled electricity?" Hey smart folks: Let's look forward, not backward! Renewable Energy IS the future! Duh!

A private company using private equipment and private company employees (NOT the government), and making BILLIONS of dollars in the process, screws up and puts thousands of people who are NOT in the oil business out of work, AND wrecks an entire ecosystem for many years to come, and what is the public's reaction? They turn around and look at the government to swoop in and "bail out" yet another wreckless private company (like the banks). Hey BP: YOU broke it...YOU fix it!
What an awful ad. First, the national guard should not be used for fighting wars overseas, and you're against that anyway, so why say that using them here reduces our security? Second, the guard has always been used for this kind of work; if you joined thinking you wouldn't be doing it, you're a fool.
Most importantly, the more oil we get from domestic sources, the less we are dependent on foreign oil, which INCREASES our national security.
terrific ad we need more people speaking out against this horrible disaster, how coukd anyone not understand the gravity of our situation, it doesn't matter wher you live we need to all help in any way we can.
Great ad! Saw it on TV yesterday. I admire this young man's composure, because I myself want to scream and cry every time I hear about or see images of this terrible destruction that was 100% caused by human recklessness, greed, and stupidity.
@hanegake what do you mean? why do you think we went into Iraq? WMD's? You are a fool if you believe that! It was b/c Iraq was about trade their oil in euros and this would have hurt the US economy, so we went in......its always about money, power and resources. Wake up !
apeople questioning the status of the person in the ad -- either JUST DON'T GET IT .. refuse to get it or are just too stupid to get it. If you want us to continue to be dependent on oil, then send your ass over to the middle east and fight for it.
The soldier in the video (me) was active duty in the Navy for over two years and joined the National Guard in 2008. National Guard are not prohibited from political activity when not on orders. There are Congressmen, a very political job, who are still officers in the Guard.
And the issue is not whether the Guard should be in the Gulf or Afghanistan- the point is that our addiction to oil- domestic and foreign- is costly and should be reduced.
It's too bad that the actor is a fraud. Does anyone really think that someone in the military would be allowed to release this very political commercial? Besides the fact that the main actor is a blatant liar, the commercial is not too bad. My only question is... would Obama send another 11,000 troops overseas to fight? My guess is no. So these Guardsmen and Women don't really have another mission. Do they?
@rgeier2 well to become a member of votevets you have to prove your military service so he's not a fraud. and as long as he is not in uniform he can attend and speak on behalf of any political view he wants to. signing up for the military doesn't take away your rights.
People settle down Mr Obama is doing all he can to help, please have patience it's not that bad. Once he finishes up with Barbara Boxer in Calif and plays a few rounds horse then he'll take care of this silly oil spill.
interesting video

If there were an alternate fuel to use or method, shit, wouldn't we be using it? Lets face it, without oil our world would come to a screeching halt!

A national clean energy intitaive wouldn't just levy an outright tax to accomplish, it would also tax everyone with:
* Higher engergy bills
* Businesses moving production overseas in large numbers, meaning lost revenue and lost jobs
* Replacing more private sector jobs with government sector ones
* Strengthening an environmental lobby which is de facto anti-progress
Also, more production overseas would mean a net less clean world, probably much less cleaner = not really green at all.

America was built on ingenuity, not greed.
The few wealthy have robbed us of our dignity .. stand up, speak out, bring America back to a place of honor.
We are 'One Nation, Under God' .. not one nation under the oil companies and banking industry.
This tragic oil spill has BP, Haliburton spending a very small fraction of their earnings on the problem.
The earth deserves our respect, the children of God deserve our respect.
Make that call ...
