  • 2 people are dumb enough to tell Gene Krupa not to go boom boom bap bap bap boom boom bap bap bap ba-boom ba-boom bap bap boom...

  • That matchbox solo was...wait for it...HOT!!! Yea thats right i made a pun. Gene Krupa u never cease to amaze me!

  • Imagine if you could have lessons with Gene Krupa...

  • Great until that prick saxophonist starts playing BeBop, but did you see Gene's effortless switch from tympany grip to match? superb.

  • Huuuge! infuence on me.

  • he was my cousin!

  • The guy is a fuckin' drummin' masta!

  • The best drummer ever....fab video....

  • who do you dislike this?

  • The Match Box thing is incredible - so simple yet sooooooooooooo swinging - no one swung more then Gene - nobody

  • HOT STUFF ~ Krupa still swings PLENTY! :)

  • Hello. Nice video and I've always been impressed by the talent of Krupa. But, and no offense meant, the music I hear in your video is from "Sing Sing Sing" from Louis Prima and not "Swing Swing Swing" from John Williams. Maybe it's called like that in the DVD you're speaking about? Anyway thanks for the clip.

  • The best part of this song is 0:10 - 0:39 :D

  • Amazing!!

  • 0:10 - 0:36 is my favorite part, no matter how simple it sounds, it's difficult to master

  • He's great , take a look at Fred Young ( no middle name.)

  • OMG that's a drummer Wow :O

  • It reminded me, the drum solos of Peter Criss

  • @denf13 Well said...... I couldn't agree with you more.

Gene was one of Peter Criss's hero's. Both Gene K and Peter C have inspired an unbelievable amount of people to play the drums because they not only sounded amazing, looked extremely cool but made drumming look fun.

  • great the man who made drums an important instrument in the publics. view.

  • wore out a record album of krupa playing sing sing sing when i was 17 years old back in '81. his live drum boogie solo was, to me, the greatest drum solo i ever heard. even buddy rich couldn't touch this one.

  • My god, the thing with the matchstick was awesome!

  • how can that one person not like this?

  • @thisisformusiconly: I agree with what you're saying, but it does seem that a lot of so drummers these days think that if you have more drums you'll instantly be a better drummer, I myself have an 8piece kit with 7 cymbals, but i'm just as comfortable behind a small kit as i am behind a big kit, I can do just as much with a basic set up as i can with my full kit, it's more about knowing when it's appropriate to use a particular drum or cymbal than hitting something cos it's in front of you

  • n stupid Lady Gaga and Wiz get 100 times the views as this video. Ive watched all of those stupid pop artists videos and none make me wana go bang out on my drum set rite now than this man

  • Love him! RIP!

  • tenes razon

  • John Bonham once called Gene Krupa,'the greatest drummer of all time."

  • my new hero is awesome!!!!! cs 15/05/2011.....

  • my new hero this awesome cs,13/05/2011 now is god

  • Gene was the guy who who I aspired to when I started playing in 1947 I bought every 78 and watched all the films he was in. I last saw him NY in 1963 playing with a

quartet in the NY Long Bar(?) Always regret not getting to speak to him! Still playing

aged 77 I keep asking myself would Gene have approved of that? Stops me from

getting sloppy in my old age !!

  • there was a time when drumming used to be cool thank to him. but if i tell someone today that i'm drummer they just fuckin don't care... i think musicians should get more respect in general.

  • I'm assuming the one person who disliked this wishes they could be Gene Krupa.

  • QUALITY!!!!

  • @billybobs309 It was you wasn't it? We should be able to vote down and eventually remove dislikes for videos like this, which don't deserve to be tainted.

On a much lighter note, fuck me was that amazing.

  • @Wonderlanification what? what the hell are you on about here?

  • @billybobs309 hmmmm...guessing it wasn't you. Trying to smoke out the perp. responsible for that single dislike up there, just throwing spaghetti at the wall I guess. Go on, you're free to go now

  • @Wonderlanification haha no, still 292 to 1 isn't bad

  • It was Louis Prima actually wrote the song "Sing, Sing Sing" and there ARE lyrics too. Benny Goodman was billed as "The King Of Swing" and recorded it. Gene was the drummer with Benny's band. Gene, Ben Pollack, Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, Chick Webb were Big Band leaders too!

  • I learned the matchbox solo, and now I can't stop playing it on my snare! (with the snares off, of course) :D

  • @smitty54017 thanks I will definitely check him out :)

  • @MrISatai Joe Morello died a few weeks ago. Another legend gone.

  • alot of drummers these days seem to think that the more drums you have the better you're going to be, but guys like gene krupa, rufus jones, buddy rich, sam woodyard etc disprove that theory. nobody even comes close to acheiving what these guys did. and i mean NOBODY

  • @bastidador Check out Bernie Dresel with the Brian Setzer Orchestra. He's done some awesome work with Brian, as well as his own band. He is definitely keep their spirit alive and well.

  • @bastidador Does that mean the less drums you have the better drummer you are? Let see how well the drummer drums before actually judging. Remember its the drummer behind the kit, not the drum kit itself.

  • Well, that just gave me an inferiority complex. I'm gonna watch it again!

  • Gene Krupa made drums not only rhythmic, bul also melodic. He is great.

  • I love all those "My favorite drummers of all time" vids on utube - what a bunch of morons accomplishing the broadcasting of their ignorance...

  • 1:26 .. that base is friggin huge

  • Holy shit, Gene could do music with JUST a couple of matchsticks, and I can´t even do a decent drumroll...as Cinedon07 says, "I feel so inadequate"...

  • @MrISatai Yeah, he's 82 years old though, so I doubt he will be much longer. :(

But I totally agree with you, there's a world of difference between the jazz drumming and rock drumming. Where the latter is all about powerful expression the former is sort of just playing around.

  • @MrISatai Joe Morello still is, you could talk to him.

  • WAY better than blast beating...

  • Gene Krupa. Jesus.

  • ....I... feel.. so....inadequate.....

  • He can beat any drummer, especially rock n roll drummers, any day of the week.

  • Gene was the Best!!!!!

  • Magic!!

  • Sing sing sing*

  • The drumming at the beginning was on fire.

  • haha gene is too awesome :D

  • This is why I took drum lessons when I was a young kid.....sadly I had no talent but big dreams.....oh well

  • wow. he killed on the drums. jesus my eyes cant follow this! haha

  • I bet women fell at his feet.

  • Yesterday was my Pop's 82nd birthday. I gave him the 4 CD remastered set of Benny Goodman's historical 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert, featuring the talent of this great drummer. Pop, who has always been a great fan of Mr. Krupa, told me that Krupa had a habit of smoking a little reefer before his concerts. Whatever he did, it worked!! What talent!! I even listen to this music and enjoy it heartily. Thank you for posting this!!

  • Interesting to see Krupa using a China cymbal.

  • He was so high

  • awesome!!!

  • There are a couple of clips taken from a very good extended solo interspersed with clips of various other things. I would LOVE to see the entire extended solo.

  • To back that up: January 16, 1938 concert at Carnegie Hall, first time any jazz band had ever played there. Benny Goodman Orchestra, Benny on the clarinet, Gene Krupa on the drums.

That concert started the swing era.

  • Bad ass.

Buddy Rich fans need to remember that Krupa was 8 years older than him, and many (if not most) of the technical and sylistic aspects of playing swing drums were invented by him, not Buddy.

Like the idea of the drumkit didn't exist until Krupa invented it, likewise the idea of playing a stand-up bass drum with a foot pedal. Never been done before, and Buddy just picked it up years later along with everybody else.

Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa invented swing.

  • He was a genius...

  • @XinoZ16 HE IS A GENIUS.

  • @XinoZ16 still is

  • @XinoZ16 He still is...

  • huge bassdrum lol

  • The rhythm was in his soul. It is not always what you play but how you play it. He kind of made the drums sing, musical and interesting playing.

  • ive seen a lot of drum stick tricks, but the match sticks were just bananas

  • @alee6406 noooo, they were matches :)

bananas would ben cool too though

  • Comment removed

  • I'd never really seen much Krupa outside poor quality old movies. It's nice to know he could actually play. Obviously a big influence on Bonham.

  • @Asymmatrix

Mmmm I don't think so, Krupa was a Jazz drummer and Bonham kind of replaced all the jazz rythms and patterns for drums.

I think he's and Buddy Rich are a big influence of many outstanding drummers , like Keith Moon, Neil Peart , and Daniel Glass, Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta.

  • @Manoplero I'll assume you're not a drummer, since that is completely wrong. Take a look, for example, at the solo@ 1:38.

Keith Moon was unique, he basically flailed around but it worked because he had tremendous talent. Peart clearly shows influence of Buddy and Krupa. Most of what Bozzio does is not all that related to either Buddy or Krupa, ie: ostinatos and syncopated fourishes. Colaiuta is the most traditional player of the bunch so the comparisons to Buddy are obvious.

  • @Manoplero Oh, btw, the one guy you should have mentioned, in relation to Buddy Rich, would have been Carl Palmer. You know, the guy they called the 'New Buddy Rich.' Guess you didn't know that either, huh, or why they called him that. 'The end.'

  • @Asymmatrix

First of all , I must say that although your coment was quite haughty I'm going to answer. I mentioned a bunch of the finest drummers I have ever listened to. Not particulary assigning, the influence of this two great drummers (Buddy and Gene).

Carl Palmer is called "the new buddy rich" But in my opinion that nickname suits a little big for him.

  • @Asymmatrix Your conclusion is a little rude also, considering the fact that in your opinion the only drummer without influence of buddy or gene is Terry Bozzio,

Syncopated fourishes? aren't Syncopated and Ragged rythms the "roots" of jazz ?

    Saludos =)

  • @Manoplero Your original comments were rude and unnecessary. Cry me a river. If you don't understand what I mean by Bozzio's playing syncopated, then we know that you haven't really listened to him either. Not jazz-related at all.

  • o_O lol.
