@nills99 Cool. Just one more thing, most OSes see a thread as a logical core because they can't distinguish between a core and a device which has Hyper Threading - like a Pentium Extreme Ed. looks like a quad-core CPU.
@nills99 This comes from me, who is now an experienced NET programmer. What Hyper Threading does is runs two threads at the one time in each core. It does this by doubling the ALUs in each core.
@nills99 No, they're "logical cores" - not physical cores. 2 of them are physical, two of them are logical. Hyper Threading works by adding a second ALU to the CPU core.
@nills99 As does mine. As you may have noticed this video is almost two years old. The i5 and i7 have changed since then. We are now even in a second era of Core processors. This video relates solely to the original specification s of the processors.
@drjblf Very difficult question. I have an i7 at 2.8GHz and it runs smoothly with no problems and I recon to be honest the i7 is faster than the i5 with a higher clock rate. It does depend on what you will be doing with it as well though.
i just bought a acer 5742 i5 (460) mid range i5 4g 500gb for £500 in comet i tryed the intel.com test drive program and it reccomended an i5 for me listening to music, watchin vids, and sufing the net.
@riccccccardo celeron isn't even the same prodcuct line so they are not comparable. celeron is still being made and they are really low performance processors... i3 is x10 better. I have a core 2 duo computer in my house and it runs all those tasks without a problem :) and that's an older processor than the i3
i got £500 max to spend on a new laptop i could not choose between i3 or i5 at the moment i stupidly bought 3 years ago a intel celeron aspire 3682 im wondering is the i3 the celron of today at the moment on my computer i have i tunes, norton, msn, spy bot and because of this it takes my laptop 10 minutes before i can use it will it be the same with the i3?
@riccccccardo Thanks for the question. The i3 will not be the same as the Celeron because it is a new architecture but the i3 is designed to replace the Celeron in terms of market placement. I would say a Core i3 should run smoothly but, if you can afford the i5, I would opt for the i5 due to the fact that it features Hyper Threading.
@jamiebalfour04 im taking advantage of the january sales lol intel r so confusing i found out theres loads of diff i 3s 370 350 etc so annoying for a guy that wants a fast laptop thats not gonna slow down with msn etc and does not want to spend more then £500 like ill go pc world and see old dual core intels with better hz or bigga hard drive then an i3 they make it so complicated i thought maybe the the i3 was new celeron :(
@The6Enlightened6One6 A solid state drive, RAM, a Blu Ray ROM for my laptop and docking station for my laptop which I have already been given now, Starcraft II, Wii Music, James Bond Blood Diamond, £370 and some other stuff which I do not know of yet. The total is about £700 for me this year lol. Still I dunno what else is coming. I'll have to wait until tomorrow morning...
What is better to get a MacBook with core 2 duo or MacBook pro with i7 coz there is like no difference between 13" MacBook pro and MacBook ? Is there? So which one coz MacBook is cheaper but pro is better? Or is it?
@TFC118 Oh yea the Pro is better. The Pro has a better graphics card, larger hard drives and can take more RAM. The Pro also features (other than the 13" version) the new line of Intel processors. And yes, the new Core i7 is a much better performer than the Core 2 Duo. Hope that helps and I would appreciate it if you subscribed. Thanks.
I am having some trouble to choose between Intel® Core™ i7 740QM (1.73 Ghz, 6MB, 4C and Intel® Core™ i5 Processor 540M(2.53GHz,3MB cache) for my notebook. I will be using this for gaming. Some people told me that its better off to get the Core i5 instead of i7 as there aren't much program capable of running 4 core at once. So I would like to ask, in terms of running only one program, which one of them would provide a better performance? Thank You.
I ordered a i7 processor and I think i should of put i5 unstead because it is faster, but the i7 allows me to put 8 RAM sticks, and i5 only 4 simply because of hyper threading, that frustrates me because I never modified a computer, never added parts to a computer.Am kinda ify on things,i5 is more performant maybe i gotta wait for i7 prices go down
The i7 is superior to the i5. End of story. Speaking laptop wise, the i7 is commonly quad or six core, with 8+ way mutitasking (hyperthreading) and turbo boost. The i5 is commonly a dual or quad core with 4+ way mutitasking (hyperthreading) and turbo boost. The i3 is a dual core and not all have hyperthreading. The i3 also does not have the turbo boost feature. The i5 should be plenty of power for most people. I've even seen fairly graphic intesive games played on the i3.
I see. So you recommend the i5? In the video u said even though the i7 is more expensive, you'd recommend the i7 over the i5. So why are you recommending the i5 now?
@renewer Ok, well I mean for your purposes, I would go with an i5. If you are doing basic video editing, an i5 should be fine. Hyper Threading is a massive advantage in most cases, but an i5 should be fine for you.
@jamiebalfour04 Thanks for your help. I'm delighted to learn that you may use my question as a topic for your next video! I look forward to more of your posts.
i5 all the way.... i7 is just for those over enthusiastic ppl. performance wise i5 should be way more than enof, regradless of what u do, make sure in i5, u buy i5-750
@chrismackie1979 That's because its a mobile processor. This video actually only affects the desktop processor range and not the mobile processor range as they were released after the video was created. So sorry for that.

look man for real the RAM, as well as the hyperthreading on the chip, the front speed bus on the chip I mean right now you can get a Core 2 Duo that is better than the i5 or i7
Core 2 Duo doesn't have Hyper Threading. But yea, a high end Core 2 Duo/Quad can still outperform an i5 or i7. Don't forget also the Core 2 Duo is cheaper which allows the construction of a cheaper high end machine.
No. I just feel that for the price i7 is still overly priced. I don't play any games on my computer, so a Core 2 Quad is fine for my own requirements. Performance wise I don't actually feel that a Core 2 Duo/Quad is anywhere near close (sorry about that in the previous post) but for its price the average user I've built computers for the Duo/Quad has been a much better choice for price to performance for what tasks they will be carrying out.
@xxsekoxx Funny that eh? So I just make all these videos and speak a load of crap? Ahh well. That's not what the majority of people who have subscribed and/or watched my videos think, so you obviously shouldn't critisise me about something that you don't actually have any arguement for either.
@jamiebalfour04 No i didnt say you speak a load of crap. @xxsekoxx@xxsekoxx I'm not saying its better in performance, I just feel that the i7 is overpriced for now. Core 2 Duo is fine for most applications of today. Especially for me as I really only do programming on my computer.
@mbbsdoctor Let's not turn this into a heated debate, but what I'm saying is that I'd rather stick with my Quad and Duo PCs until the i7 comes down a bit more. I don't do much but programming and graphics editing and light gaming so it makes no real difference to me.

@jamiebalfour04 That is true. The Core 2 Duo is plenty for most home users. I bought a Toshiba 5 months ago with that processor and loved it. I recently purchased another Toshiba with the i7 " which i need for HD editing" and of course it is a great computer.

Yea if you have a look at the info for the video you'll find that it was just that I had missed that out and had to make it only a comment. Sorry about that.
Core i5 or i7 is NOT the real question at all. The real question is whether you go for a LGA 1156 socket or a LGA 1336 socket.
Important point: THE CORE i7 860 and 870 ARE EFFECTIVELY NOT GENUINE CORE i7s!! They are on a Core i5 motherboard...they just have hyperthreading enabled.
Also, the most processor intensive task most people will wanna do is gaming...and will this benefit from hyperthreading? No. Your best off with an i5 and a kickass Graphics card.
I actually get asked these questions, so I just answer them as I'm asked. Fair point about the socket. Thanks for that. And yea I agree, the Intel branding system has made it to a point where its become confusing for most, the i7 860 and 870 are just i5 processors with HT technology. And yea, with gamers the i5 will do fine, but if your doing programming or video editing/encoding, HT does seriously benefit you. I still believe if you want to save as much as you can that a Core 2 Quad is fine.
Though just for the record, the Core i5 does have one major advantage over the Core 2 Quad and that is that it is natively quad core which means that there is no shared front side bus. Thanks for the comment by the way.
Yeah...but if you are running other softwares's too while gaming (like fraps or doing a virus scan etc.) then that could seriously lower your fps without HT
Think of it this way, because i5 is natively quad core, its has four cores on one die, not four cores on two die. This means that the front side bus is not used to share data between the two dies. Essentially this will improve performance. However, Core 2 Quad has been out there for longer and is far cheaper and if your interested in saving, go for Core 2 Quad. I actually kind of regret not waiting a few weeks later for an i7 as I have a Core 2 Quad Q9550.

so core i5 is better than core 2 qued?

Think of it this way, because i5 is natively quad core, its has four cores on one die, not four cores on two die. This means that the front side bus is not used to share data between the two dies. Essentially this will improve performance. However, Core 2 Quad has been out there for longer and is far cheaper and if your interested in saving, go for Core 2 Quad. I actually kind of regret not waiting a few weeks later for an i7 as I have a Core 2 Quad Q9550.
