If America would just stop funding "war" and all that killing people shit that just doesn't make sense to the rest of the world they'd be the "best" country ever. Sadly, they like killing far too much :(.
I work in a lab that experiments with countermeasures for the ISS. NASA and NSBRI fund our research and, it is true, our work has become rather political as the government has been hacking and slashing at funds toward education and science for quite some time now. Squabbling over funds makes it difficult to co-operate with others in our field - we have to play everything close to the chest lest we risk sharing too much with a stingy collaborator and lose funding to them. We need more awesome.
Science done by NASA is some of the best in the world. Although my interests lie more towards Genetics and molecular biology, the stuff done there still blows my mind away.
Now if only NASA would stop blowing rockets up, they'd be almost perfect!
As a non-US citizen (UK), I think NASA is one of the coolest things about the USA. It sounds cool too: N A S A. Say really slow and in your best American (English).
Of course, the UK has its UKSA, but say that U K S A really slow (with any accent) and it's just doesn't have the same ring to it :/
I wish my taxes went to Nasa, and I live in Norway. Nasa benefits the entire world, why should only one nation fund it? Well I guess a microscopic percent of my tax goes to ESA, but still.
After tonight's Republican debate (6/13/11) that came down hard on funding NASA (and the EPA), this video needs to go viral! Here's to "awesome"! (And that includes both agencies). I grew up in California before the Clean Air Act. Breathing smogged-filled air SUCKED! Thanks to Nixon (yes, Nixon!) for the creation of the EPA -- the one safeguard of our environment. Here's to awesome NASA, EPA, and air!
You're totally correct. NASA's budget is .06 of 1% of our nations total budget. Every dollar NASA is given, it returns 28 dollars to the taxpayers in discoveries. You can't say that about any other government agency.
no matter how many times I rewatch this video, I still get completely gobsmacked by the amount of awesome NASA does (do? grammar is hard.) I sit and star slackjawed and the screen for a full 30 seconds before I recover!
Sadly we were too careless with our pie-in-the-sky spending of tax dollars, and have to cut back all over until this is resolved. A billion here and a billion there each day adds up over a lifetime. D.C. is full of departments and programs that all say essentially the same thing, yet MATH is part of science too, right?

@kokofan50 There is a culture active of militaries and scientists who is abusing the state of security 24 hours of day of WSA, this culture is active in youtube and cnn. NASA is part of that culture. So thats the truth.
Awesome video Hank! Unfortunately a big part of the awesomeness is coming to an end with no replacement in sight for quite some time. The shuttle's last flight is currently scheduled for June 28, 2011. Thanks for a great video.
AWESOME VIDEO!! I'm showing this to my students....so when they run the country they can increase the awesomeness (unlike the current leaders who believe everything is dark....No wonder... they have the heads up their !@#).

As someone involved in NASA education programs, I couldn't agree more! And I love the Hubble 20th anniversary poster, it is currently adorning my wall as well.
@Tilekist Well, not all...They closed all those 42 telescope Allen Array until they have the funding to open it again. They are actually asking the public and the gov. for help.Hopefully they will regain the funding for it.
Imagine what Nasa could do if they had the budget allotted to the US's war machine (military). It makes me want to cry not to mention we will shortly be relying on the Soviet Union get people to the space station.
@Ionizap The Soviet Union ? Reality check... the Cold War is over for 20 years, Russia is perfectly capable of sending astronauts into space. Scientific improvements to human life should be a joint effort and not a xenophobic ideal like yours.
I wish this man could speak on some major show and get more attention drawn to suck. I know if he could get this on say the Colbert Report it would garner enough attention to at least have Congress humor a spending increase on NASA.
So true! To the people saying NASA has become too political, the reality is that politicians think they are becoming scientific. Lets leave sceince to scientists and politics to the citizens.
Brilliant speech!! Well, if d MBAs could manage d universe, stars would be turned into flash light to save energy turning d whole place into darkness. But nature playing perfection, SPENDS lots of energy to produce light... brilliant ; ) & d scientists & engineers are SPENDING money to find a way to re-use d spread 'free' light . Perhaps MBAs are already thinking about a sunlight tax, or star tax... to cut universe energy costs?? preventing energy spending?!... well, I pay CO2 tax ... rofl
NASA. Just like any other Government entity. So mis-managed and political it has lost sight of it's own goals. Was supposed to be an entity of our government that was originally devoted to the betterment of mankind. Now becoming an organization of entitlements to Russia to launch our personnel and equipment into space. So political in management
This is so great!! At last it seems like NASA is using this channel the way a normal youtuber would- by inviting Hank Green to do a guest video. I love it.
Sounds like it might've been a good message, but the carnival-barker style vocals and the jump cuts every three seconds made this totally unwatchable. I lasted about 30 seconds.
For a Federal Agency, I think NASA gets a lot of bang for the taxpayer buck and should be the last in line to suffer any cuts (but I guess I'm biased, since I work for NASA).
I can't TELL you how much I want a shirt with your slogan on it. (Well, even tho I just did.) Send me a postcard with your address and I'll make sure you get a packet o' lithos, etc.:

His wife also has a job, though I can't recall what it is.
Go to Florida and see the massive layoffs, closing schools, bankrupt businesses, the ghost town Canaveral and the Cape has become with the shuttle drawdown and lack of follow on that Constellation would prove to be. Obama will lose Florida in 2012 and America will be guaranteed a distant third place behind Europe/Russia and China. Norman Spinrad was right we have become the "best armed" fourth world country. NO VISION NO FUTURE
Cancellation of the Constellation program has totally shaken my faith in NASA and concurrently the Obama Administration's commitment to science and space exploration. After a lifetime of cancellations: Apollo Applications Project, Apollo 18, 19, and 20, Dynasoar, MOL, Skylab Mission 4, SEI, NASP, Freedom, X-20, X-33, etc etc. my hope for expansion of humanity is in Europe and China. NASA is finished and belongs in a museum like the National Air and Space Mausoleum in DC. 18 billion pittance!
YES! If all we focus our resources on is taking care of ourselves, then what's the point of it all? A great civilization must explore, and NASA is there to lead that exploration, turning things over as quickly as it can to the commercial sector and then diving into the next thing that's so difficult that it's hard to believe that it's even possible.
Thank you for this video. I've heard so many people say to me that we don't get anything out of space exploration and the best counter I can come up with is all the satellites we depend on. But let's not forget the fact that one day in the very distant future our sun will die. If we or a more evolved version of us is still around at that time they will have to pack up and leave, but only if they can. Let's not forget about predicting devestating solar flares aswell.
I'm all for doubling NASA spending, triple it! It's a tiny portion of federal discretionary spending.
However this is one of the few areas to do so. And we have many cancelled promises that never came to fruition that cost billions of NASA's precious budget.
Too much government spending also increases suck exponentially creating dependancy and unsustainble entitlements. We need to balance our budgets or there will be no way to increase NASA's budget.
If NASA can do ALL THAT with just less than half 1 percent of our budget, surely we can decrease the funds in many other areas so that it may go to increasing awesome in other areas of our lives.
Wow, government entitlement programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security account for over half of our entire federal budget each year. What is Washington's solution to the problem? They cut into NASA's 0.45% share of the budget. Hopefully everyone remembers that when they go to vote in the fall of 2012. Obama said he wants US space exploration to be commercial, yet aren't there something like 200 different companies that helped build the Space Shuttle?
Hank sometimes I think if you had been my science teacher I might not have hated it /epicly failed at it. you make science interesting and non hurty to my dyslexic brain.
As someone who grew up 5 minutes from NASA and lives in the community built for astronauts and their families, I truly appreciate this video! It is going to be so sad to see the last two shuttles launch! <3 NASA
If America would just stop funding "war" and all that killing people shit that just doesn't make sense to the rest of the world they'd be the "best" country ever. Sadly, they like killing far too much :(.

Too much government spending also increases suck exponentially creating dependancy and unsustainble entitlements. We need to balance our budgets or there will be no way to increase NASA's budget.

I LOVE THIS VIDEO! Almost as much as I love NASA!

If NASA can do ALL THAT with just less than half 1 percent of our budget, surely we can decrease the funds in many other areas so that it may go to increasing awesome in other areas of our lives.

decreasing the suck, increasing the awesome. That's gotta be the new NASA slogan

@delmarian
I would donate to NASA. Not a lot since I don't make a lot of money, but if everyone chipped in, we could help to accelerate the space program.
Delta094204 10 months ago 3
@delmarian I most certainly would! NASA is the most exciting thing there is these days! Love from Norway ;)
