they're representative of what the damage would have been to american cities had the bombs dropped on Japan been on them. You never think of devastation on your own cities. 9/11 is just a peek at what we do to other people all the time!

The story that the A-bombs "saved lives" is by now well-documented propaganda with no founding whatsoever in truth. In fact, the Japanese were on the brink of surrender, with the only sticking point being that they wanted assurance that the Emperor would be spared. In any case, there is absolutely no justification for bombing civilians, and certainly no need for a 2nd bomb. These were sick experiments, picking pristine targets, not strategic (industrial/military) targets.

When people think of US bombs on Japan at the end of WW II, they think A-Bombs, but in fact, many cities in Japan as well as Germany were horribly damaged by firebombs. The percentages show how much of a German or Japanese city was destroyed by such bombing, then switches to the name of an equivalently sized US city, to give a sense of scale, and hopefully, shame.
