I dont know where you visit in Ankara city.I have been to europe many times but i can definitely say that Ankara is not different than other european cities,especially the cities of Italy,France and Greece..Also people of Ankara are quite modern and open minded beautiful people,there is nothing for tourists to visit in ankara,true ,but for living I would prefer Ankara over Milan and Paris.

They didn't try to invade any city, especially Izmir and they didn't ask permission to British Empire to invade Istanbul during WWI. there are no Ottoman monuments. The Ottomans were conquerors. They destroyed everything in their path. A few mosques (cami) in Istanbul designed by Mimar Sinan who happens to be a kidnapped Greek boy raised as a Turk to become a Janissary but became an architecht. The thing i can say is Turkey can be separated as west and east-very different people and education level-.Turks and Greeks share the same dark history,each country has been very cruel to each other but past is past,it shouldn't polute the present.
Western parts of Turkey are as advanced as Europe, people are highly educated, modern and have high income levels.
The problem is, I've been living in different countries in Europe for a while, and unfortunately %95 of the Turks I see here are illiterate, primitive and have very little income. That's why Europe is against Turkey. Because they see Turks who in fact do not represent Turkey at all.
Briefly, I love Greece, culture of Greece and especially Izmir are very similar.
I am proud of the Ottoman roots of Turkey, however trust me, after 1923, when the modern Turkey Republic was established, Turkey has become the most peace-oriented country in the world, contrary to Ottoman's conquering policy. Because we are the country which suffered most from WW1.
Currently, Turkey's only aim is to protect itself, not to conquer other countries. If we want we can do it because we have Europe's 2nd most powerful army, but as I said our only aim is to keep peace.
Well in both countries there are some aggressive people who think their country is sinless whereas the other country is pure evil.
About the past, in Greece of course the story is told as "Turks were cruel against Greek". In Turkey, as you can expect, the story is exactly the opposite.
Turkey is not the only nation who did mistakes in the past. Look at what France did in Algeria, look at what Armenians did in Azerbaijan, or for a recent example look at what US did in Iraq. It goes on like that
Instead of discussing, if you come to Izmir just once you will see that we are no different dear Greek friends. I'm a Turk from Izmir living abroad at the moment and some of my best friends are Greek. It was not just Turks or Greeks who slaughtered the people of the other nation.Both countries did terrible things. All we can do is to talk about now and future instead of blaming each other for the events happened in the past. I support Greek&Turkish brotherhood, because we are all Meditteraneans.

im british but i know history and i have read many historical books. Smyrna (the real name of the city you call Izmir) was a Greek city, like all the cities of Anatolia. The greeks first occupied the Anatolia and the Coast of Little Asia as they call.
In this video we can see many things (the ancient theatre, statues, and others...) which created by the Greeks and they belong to the Greek history and civilisation.
You cant say all those lies about the city and gelerally about the Greeks cities

Even though there are lots of Muslims in Izmir they are not old fashioned, reactionary people who are trying to make Turkey a country like Iran.
Muslims in Izmir are modern, open-minded, intellectual and well educated people. And the ruling party hates people who are not radical Islamists.

Izmir is the main city of opposition against the Islam oriented current government. The ruling party hates Izmir, and Izmir hates them. Because the ruling party tries to rule the country using their misinterpretations of Islam whereas people in Izmir are hardcore seculars and believe that trying to enforce religious laws and making people obey to them is unacceptable.

Was in Izmir for the past year and I absolutely loved the nightlife...scenery...history...resorts...and foreign girls :) Definately look forward in coming back in the future for a vacation. Highly recommended just dont drive use public trans.

pantso777, about 1922 and 1974, you should look at both perspectives. Greeks invaded Izmir in WW1 while it was under Ottoman control. And the debate about The Great Fire continues, it is still unknown if it was started by the Greeks or the Turks. And in 1974 Turkey intervened in the situation just because the Greeks claimed the whole island.

No I'm not crazy. According to many resources when the army of Mustafa Kemal came back to Izmir to reclaim the city Greeks burned down everything just in order to leave a destroyed city behind them. As I said, the debate still continues. There are thousands of Turkish witnesses who claim that it was Greeks that burned the city. And Greeks say it was Turks. So you cannot know which is the truth.

Remember Thessaloniki was once an Ottoman city, and now it's under control of Greece. Western parts of Turkey are as advanced as Europe, people are highly educated, modern and have high income levels.
The problem is, I've been living in different countries in Europe for a while, and unfortunately %95 of the Turks I see here are illiterate, primitive and have very little income. That's why Europe is against Turkey. Because they see Turks who in fact do not represent Turkey at all.
Briefly, I love Greece, culture of Greece and especially Izmir are very similar.

I am proud of the Ottoman roots of Turkey, however trust me, after 1923, when the modern Turkey Republic was established, Turkey has become the most peace-oriented country in the world, contrary to Ottoman's conquering policy. Because we are the country which suffered most from WW1.
Currently, Turkey's only aim is to protect itself, not to conquer other countries. If we want we can do it because we have Europe's 2nd most powerful army, but as I said our only aim is to keep peace.

About the past, in Greece of course the story is told as "Turks were cruel against Greek". In Turkey, as you can expect, the story is exactly the opposite.
Turkey is not the only nation who did mistakes in the past. Look at what France did in Algeria, look at what Armenians did in Azerbaijan, or for a recent example look at what US did in Iraq. It goes on like that

Instead of discussing, if you come to Izmir just once you will see that we are no different dear Greek friends. I'm a Turk from Izmir living abroad at the moment and some of my best friends are Greek. It was not just Turks or Greeks who slaughtered the people of the other nation.Both countries did terrible things. All we can do is to talk about now and future instead of blaming each other for the events happened in the past. I support Greek&Turkish brotherhood, because we are all Meditteraneans.
