Great kata. It's a shame that it's become the specialty of 'sport karate' exemplified by Luca Valdesi. I've just started to learn this so that I can teach the rest of my club. From about twenty minutes of initial practice I made it to the kiba-dachi immediately following the roundhouse kicks from the floor (and obviously very rough thus far). Certainly a lot of work.
@Darragh62 So they say. I don't think I buy into the whole "most advanced" thing though. It's the most physically challenging, I would allow, but I am not convinced that makes it most advanced.
@MeanEyedCats elements of 15 kata in it... its not the difficulty of the kata that will make it most advanced... gojushiho sho would be one of the toughest, or maybe gankaku.... the meaning behind it i think is what makes it advanced, and how it should be performed.... tempo varies greatly in it... best unsu by far was by yahara in his prime... this one, not so great
@Darragh62 I think there are legitimate differences in interpretation. I have to admit that I haven't seen Yahara's, but I'd be greatly hesitant to say that Kanazawa's wasn't great. There are a lot of subtleties in his interpretation, and I imagine that between Yahara and him, there were merely differences in where those subtleties could be found and what purpose they were intended to serve.
@MeanEyedCats im talking about the basics... of course everybodys interpretation is different and everybody is built different so everybody will look diff... what i mean is the feeling and energy put in .... Yahara really made this kata famous... its fantastic to watch, very powerfull, a lot of the stances here dont look very solid for me . but thats just minor things id look at.... from a master like kanazawa ud expect a little more, maybe just an off-day for him wen he filmed this
Kanazawa Sensei performs this kata as all the JKA Masters. This was Nakayama's kata- basically reserved for him. After his passing other Masters began performing. Very difficult kata to perform properly, especially the jump, which body is horizontal to the ground. This is JKA however, the is a modern day kata coming after Funakoshi Sensei and attributed to Nakayama Sensei and Nishiyama Sensei period.
He's Italian and looks like he's busting on Mr. Kanazawa, big time. "Poor Funakoshi, to have a student so twisted. Such a lack of techhnique... (?)but surely (I go?) Japan to learn from the best. I don't know for sure, but the bit about "poor Funakoshi" sure looks insulting to me.
