adamfawcett, macs aren't for people that don't know how to use a "standard customizable system", they are for people that don't want to wait 2 minutes for the computer to turn on, shut down, or for it to open an application :)
Funny thing is, BSD is built with the Unix kernal, and Mac OS X also uses the Unix kernal, so essentially with a mac you are buying overpriced hardware and expensive software that you can get distro's of for free.
and only one last thing there are virus for macs, or atleast I've seen one and it was DAAAAAAAAMN easy to code, but yet who would it'dbe passed to, but neverminding that macs can get sick too
@magichristo Beautiful? You can customize PCs. And Apple's beauty has some issues associated with it... Like overheating, because there isn't enough space for vents in that beauty. Faster? I'd argue with that. My Win XP runs like a charm, consumes little resource, has awesome compatibility and never crashes. Greener? Maybe, but i'd like to see some proof first.
What do you mean outdated? What can't it do besides play some of the newer games, if even that? As to speed, i'd like to see some comparisons showing OS X is faster than XP. Same goes to environmental care. Apple may be green, but Microsoft might be no less greener. Quote from Microsoft site: "At Microsoft, we are committed to software and technology innovation that helps people and organizations around the world improve the environment."
@XenOtai 1.- XP is outdated in terms of features and design/look. And yes, that matters.
2.- Microsoft, green? All microsoft does is code the software and help companies make Windows compatible hardware. THOSE companies are in charge of making the batteries greener.
And how can you deny that Apple batteries are greener? Less of them go to waste, they last more.
XP has all the necessary feautures. What useful feautures does it not have? Also, you can customize it's look to make it like win7 interface.
I didn't make up that Miscrosoft is green. They say it on their own site. I merely quoted them. Also, I am not saying that Apple batteries are not greener. I just don't have proof for or against that. If you have, i'd like to have a glance at it.
Not much slower, those are just cosmetic changes. XP is fast and can handle that and still be faster than other OSs on the market. And you haven't answered what are those feautures that one needs and that are not present in XP or can't be added by third-party applications.
Yes, but effect of less hungry OS is the same as the effect of more capacious battery - it saves energy.
@XenOtai There are many hardware - software features that XP can't handle, and for some people that's very important. Do I really need to name them?Nope.
Okay, these people are the minority. Most of users don't need those things. That's what i meant by "necessary features". Win7 is slower than xp and doesn't add any new features that the majority of the consumers ever utilizes. And often you can still have workaround. For example, i have a PPC made more than 5 years ago. Windows Mobile 5 didn't have native support for SDHC cards with big capacity, so i installed third-party drivers and it worked. Same with XP. No need to upgrade to Win7.
You can look up some videos on youtube that show considerably slower work with folders containing a lot of files in Win7 than in XP. There are also some other examples like that. It's not much, but it is. Personally, i think that after a couple of service packs Win7 will become better than XP. If i was buying a new computer i'd probably go for Win7. But for older machines there is no need to upgrade, as XP is noticeably faster on them. And there are still some compatibility issues with Win7.
@kornholioa Which is why you can change from Aero to Basic, which still looks damn good. Linux is the lightest OS, looking at it from just a kernel, but when you install all the shit you'd actually NEED on just about any computer it's easily close to Windows 7 without most of the features (Aero, touchscreen support, Windows Media Center, etc.)
Virus on my Windows PC? Never had one in my life. And I don't run a (virtual) firewall or anti-virus software. My NIC does enough to prevent them, unless I overwrite it which would be pretty retarded.
My PC doesn't crash either, the last time I crashed it it's because I messed up with a timer in VB.
Macs are for people who don't have the common sense to use a standard customizable system.
Trust me, me and some people do some work with erm, auditing the potential of malicious code. You'd be -really- surprised at a) just how sneaky they can be, and b) just how hard they truly are to remove, and c) just how easily they can skate past a virus scanner with FUD scantime and runtime encrypting.
@adamfawcett intellegence anytime you hear someone say u get alot of viruses on a pc, they are looking at things no one should see, also, once macs are more of the market, they will get ALOT of viruses
You know what an NIC is, so you know more about computers than most users do
The problem is that (just like not all drivers are mechanics) not everyone using a computer really knows what they're doing... and they shouldn't have to.
Its 8% and its good that way there in the minority, windows is the majority. Just use safari, firefox not IE and keep internet security up to date and youre be ok, i like not having to worry about it on mac os x
true, but i recently formatted my hard drive and i was browsing on internet explorer for like 1 hour and i got adware. Firefox + Windows + AVG = no virus.
It's not hard to make a virus for a Mac, it's just no one wants to because they don't really benefit on the majority. The only benefit they'd get is that they made a MAC user cry because they don't know what to do with the attack.
they dont get virus's because theres no profit in making a virus for macs. you can freak out a mac user who has no idea WTF is going on, but macs are 3% of the market. everyone uses Windows so they make viruses for windows, but everything else is designed for windows(games, programs, all that fun shit)
I have COD4 on my macbook, and it runs fine, theres enough mac games out there for me to play, i have a 360 for games anyway, and i'm probably gonna sell it because i'm over videogames, waste of time and $, i will always keep my N64 though, also "every program is designed for windows"? Adobe photoshop was origianly for mac, then it was later mad for windows, most pc programs are made by another company other than WINDOWS, so they don't run together with the pc as well as apple made apps on a mac
You proved your point. Not many linux distros require knowledge of terminal prompting any more. But I did come up with one thing which took some thought. Manually set up and connect a wireless card in Ubuntu/Kubuntu.
Heh, though it may be common for a CLI to be used, it certainly isn't required XD. AFAIK the same applies to manual setup of wireless cards (though automatic detection of networks should occur, you should still be able to manually specify networks through NetworkManager with a GUI). There are a few cases where a CLI may be needed by the end user but these usually aren't required for normal operation.
Ubuntu by default wouldn't use my wireless card. I installed Ndiswrapper to get a connection. That didn't work. So I tried to set a Static IP using ifconfig. still didn't work. Both together didn't work either. I'm now using Macpup Opera linux which does support my wireless card. If you do know how to fix wireless in ubuntu I will be so greatfull.
Well I'd need to know the wireless card you use before giving useful advice. Did you try posting on Ubuntu forums? If you managed to get it to work with one distro, I see no reason why it shouldn't work on another distro.
hahaha macs get viruses, accept a lot of them are designed for windows so macs just get loaded up with a bunch of viruses, which over time slows the pc down causing it to crash, PCs on the other hand can detect a lot of these and if ur smart u'd get Nod32 & Avast so your shits tighter than a babys asshole
BSD isn't based off of Linux.... The original BSD is based on Unix and predates Linux by 14 years. The FOSS BSDs may not be directly part of the Unix family but that doesn't mean they are Linux-based.

Did you know Gnu's Not Unix? It's true!
Also OS/2 was developed by IBM. MS "helped", in other words they killed it from within. Nice to see it referenced at all though.
Nobody even mentioned the Linuxes' security. I guess it goes without saying (:
Also unlike the mac, hackers put a lot of effort into breaking Linux security, since the most important servers tend to run it.
