In his autobio, Ray Davies had good things to say about Cher.

On the Kinks' 1965 tour, which was generally disastrous, Cher was one of the few pop stars they met who was actually nice to them. He was probably freaking out about the tour, and he was walking around frowning. She tried to get him to stop frowning, telling him it would give wrinkles, LOL.

Scary - it seems Chrissie Hynde may have heard this version at some point before the Pretenders did it! Of course, some of that may be because Cher and Chrissie have similar vocal ranges.

It may also be because Crissie Hynde rates Ray Davies as one of her favourite songwriters. They embarked on a relationship shortly after her arrival in UK. The Pretenders Stop Sobbing is also a Ray Davies composition.

Much as I love you Cher, this isn't as good as Marion's version. Also, the so-called "Wrecking Crew" have skipped over a couple of highly crucial chords in the arrangement of this song in the race towards lunch-break.
