Classic! Detroit vs. New York! Kenny vs. Smitty! It was an equal match. Both doing their thing. Honestly, it was a bad call. If Steve had hit the 1 and 1, then game over. He left it in the refs hand and they blew it. But give props to Kenny for scoring the last six points in regulation. He was tremendous! State still had OT to prove they were the better team. Guess they weren't!
Jud Heathcote had it right. The buzzer was not loud enough. The Superdome is one of the worst basketball arenas on the planet. It is too cavernous and the buzzer never goes off loud enough. Had this game been played in a traditional basketball arena, the officials probably hear the buzzer and wave off the shot. Then again, the red light around the backboard and replay has removed any chances for fucking up.
One of the worst calls in tournament history. Steve Smith and these Spartans deserved to go to the Final Four and got screwed. Oh well, Michigan State has been to six final fours since this time and won a National Championship. The Spartans have two national championships, and georgia tech, a big goose egg.
This was one of the best tourney games ever....man Scott was ruthless , then you had anderson breakin montgermery's ankle the whole game lol, then Steve Smith just being steve!!!
No, he didn't get the last shot off in time, but still a hell of a sequence by Kenny Anderson. MSU could have made the last shot irrelevent and didn't do it.
Lethal Weapon 3. And 1990 was a GREAT tournament overall.
I agree that he hit the shot after the horn sounded but think about it. If Steve Smith hit his free throws it never would have happened and if Michigan State had won and ended up beating Minnesota they would have suffered the same fate as anyone in the Final Four. Getting beat by UNLV.
Guess who one of the refs was? JOHN CLOUGHERTY, who was a notrious ACC cheat. He lives in Charlotte and is now the ACC supervisor of officials. He was constantly giving gifts to ACC teams.
yea its crazy, a shot like this these days would not have even come CLOSE to counting...and the commentators don't even mention it back then...i wonder how many game's outcomes and much history would be altered if the clock was taken into account back then...
Since I WAS AT the game and sitting in the lower level near the 3-point line, I can fill y'all in on what happened. The question at the time was whether it was a 3-pointer or a 2 at the buzzer--NOT if the clock ran out. It was ONLY those WATCHING on TV who questioned the time--that wasn't done at the Superdome when the shot went in. Also, I question the clock on the screen being synched with the clocks at the dome. The scoreboards there had fat yellow numbers, not thin numbers like TV showed.
This is advertised as a Kenny Anderson shot at the buzzer. In reality, it was a Kenny Anderson shot after the buzzer. This is easily the all-time NCAA Tournament screwing. I am a Kansas fan who had no rooting interest in the game, but this was a bad joke.
You cannot use touche'. Touche' is a term from fencing in which a person acknowledges they have been hit. It is akin to calling your own foul in pickup basketball. So only I could use touche', which I certainly don't because the clock stoppage indirectly led to a technical foul on Larry Brown that gave M-State two more points, thus sending the game into OT in the first place. The irony here is that now you CAN say touche'. :-)
@cherokeejoshua Yes. Not only is this shot after "00", which GTME83 says was not official until the red lights were used on the backboard, but this shot is after the buzzer as well. I agree, the Spartans got screwed. But karma reconciled that at least Georgia Tech did not go on and win the title that season. No one was going to stop UNLV that year. They were the beasts of college basketball in 1990.
Before the red lights were in use around the backboards, the rules stated that periods ended at the sounding of the horn, not "00" displayed on the scoreboard.
Everyone was so concerned with where his foot was on the shot that they forgot to check if old Kenny actually shot the ball during the game. Terrible officiating that still sucks today. Too bad they couldn't look at the monitor like they can today. MSU would have been in the Final Four.
This game made me sick to my stomach as a Spartan fan. Still does, even though our success the last 10 years or so has lessened the pain somewhat, it would have been nice to have seen MSU make it to the Final Four that year... although there's no way we would have beaten that year's UNLV squad.
What was funny how asst coaches Kevin Cantwell and Sherman Dilliard both ran the 100 yards or so the the locker room in celebration, only to be told by a security guard to get back out there...OT.

I love how the announcers keep calling it the "correct call" on the two-pointer, but never even think to see if he even got the shot off in time.

SFFOOL76 2 years ago
Yea,him and Mark Price were 2 veryyy good ones.
Wayneman117 2 years ago
Two things to note in the debate of Kenny's last second heroics...
1- GT never would have been in that position if Steve Smith hits a free throw, and
2- check the 2:40 mark in this video. MSU player steps on the inbound line before throwing the ball in. Clearly missed by the ref.
I was there as well and lost my voice (and possibly other items) on the missed inbound violation.

I think the all time ncaa tournament screwing was when there was a clock malfunction in 1986 in a sweet 16 matchup between michigan state/kansas.
