What kind of power supply did you use for this? I'm having problems with excessive ripple with the power supplies I have tried in a similar 16x tlc5941 project
Very cool project, but I have some questions, why control each LED individually instead of multiplexing them? BTW, did you daisy-chained all the TLC5940? If so, how's the frame rate? I got 4 of those chips from TI and was wondering if I could drive them in parallel.
@ketse89 in the first table version (this video) I'm using cheep LEDs with the result of those differences. now I take a couple of SMD-LEDs in each segment - no variation any more.
my suggestion is that next time you should try to multiplex the outputs of the TLCs, you could have done exactly the same with only 1 or maybe 2 TLCs!
I may just be too impressed with how well the slow fade works as a non-obtrusive animation, but it's unclear to me why you would put 12 TLCs in this table.
Why not sink 8 RGB columns (x3 for R, G and B leds) through 24 PWM outputs of 2 chained TLCs and multiplex or shift the anode rows?
Have you ever tried with more TLCs? I'd like to make such a table, with 100 RGB LEDs so I'd need 19 TLCs. Do you think it's possible? TI says that it is possible to daisy-chain 40 chips, but I'd like to know if someone has already done this before soldering all this stuff :)
@glimpsefb It sure is possible. I'm working on a TLC5940 project myself at the moment and I'm posting videos of my prototypes. The next one I post (Prototype #3) will include 3 TLC's and a clean circuit layout. I was running into some issue with power when adding on TLC's. You'll need a dedicated 5V power source for the TLC ICs, and you'll need to make sure the power source has adequate current. I'm currently using a 12V 2Amp power source... the circuit is nice and happy now.
@TVTransform It is cool. I just picked up an Arduino Mega to complement my Arduino. NG and as soon as I get an updated atmel chip for the latter I'm going to be doing an RGB wall with some glass block.
Thinking of a VERY slow fade, I would imagine it to be the most boring display ever. After watching this, I have to admit I was wrong. It is one of the nicest and most relaxing "patterns" that I have seen yet. I just bought a microcontroller kit recently; I'm going to be utilizing this slooow fade soon.

@undrwatrgypsy I, being a nerd, wasn't even thinking of that. Now that you mention it, I think it would be a disgrace to use it for ANYTHING BUT stripping & smoking. Thumbs Up!!
Haha to be quite frank i was being somewhat sarcastic about the quality of the quality of art I see in the video, perhaps I'm ignorant but i prefer to praise the skill and dedication it takes to make a painting with an easel. However I do consider the Mona Lisa to be quite, for a lack of a better term "over rated". It just seems far too simple to me, same goes for the graphics displayed. On a side note I'm willing to argue as I am a ludicrously bored 17 year old. Any comments?
