I guess it's rather like the 'chicken or the egg' question.Did those who used the 'video nasty' as a defense for their crimes have a propensity for violent acts prior to watching such films,or where they 'spurred' into committing such acts AFTER watching them?! Is it an exact science?! personally,I've watched no end of what might be classed as 'graphic' horror films, and have never felt the urge to go out & attack someone having watched a 'video nasty'! Maybe I'm not 'wired' correctly, lol!
@IceCreamSuit If I remember right she basically doesn't like them and can't understand why anyone would want to watch them. I thought I'd be obliging and respond though she never responded back.
@lampyman101 You did an excellent job in trying to explain the appeal of horror movies or violent movies and when at their best, how deeply they resonate in the psyche. Also liked the parallel with fairy tales; I'd much rather horror movies were labelled something like "adult fairy tales".
Anyway, great video. In the end, it's all a matter of personal taste I suppose.
@lampyman101 - I never purposely wind people up. Thats never my intention. Its hard to convey emotion over the net, and from everything ive read on this, the psychological and emotional feeling both lads felt that day, earlier than this dreadful day, and the aftermath,....i personally felt justified in saying what i did. If people feed me info on websites, i have to take it with a pinch of salt until i discover otherwise. Thanks.
@splatterngore Nowhere on the MurderUK site do I see any mention of Childs Play being connected to the Bulger killing. Where are you getting this nonsense from?
"where also do i mention CP 3?" ...first comment on this thread..
" The bulger case: That bared all the hallmarks of childs play, the film."
Since Childs Play 3 was specifically the film that was related by some to the case then It's reasonable to think you meant that film. I've posted a video response to your comments citing quite a few sites and articles including in the description one where the government specifically deny the films (or any films) involvement.
@splatterngore based on what you have said about this, I would say I have read considerably more about this case than you.
In the meantime i would suggest you read the news link I sent you in a PM, then afterwards I will expect you to be issuing a retraction over your ill founded comments.
@splatterngore I would ask you read the link I sent you first, then read my reply I PM'd back.
Incidentally, not trying to start a fight, its just that I care very passionately about the truth, especially when my favourite genre is being unfairly charged with something that isn't true.
@splatterngore Dude, have you actually SEEN Childs Play 3? If you had, then youd know there was NOTHING in that film that bore ANY resembelence to that case.
The FALSE link between the Bulger killing and Childs Play 3 was a story concocted by the press in order to sell newspapers. Indeed, any suggestion that they got their ideas from violent films, following an off the cuff remark by the judge, was fiercely denied by the police and there was NO evidence either ofthem had even seen the film!
I'ld like someone to articulate their liking of 'a serbian movie' or 'penance', to name two. There is no story, no message, no humor, what is there? I know that a frustrated boy who wasn't liked at school and compensated by being a bully likes it. I know a boy who can' get a woman interested likes rape movies where they can imagine themselves being dominat or revenging themselves. But why a man could like them? And no, I'm no prude and yes, I've seen them and yes, reality can allso be disgusting
@JAJ1GreenberryHill I did do a defense of A Serbian Film if that helps. And I was never a bully and have never entertained child sex or rape fantasies. Though saying I liked it is less accurate than saying I appreciated it to some extent. Personally I appreciated in much the same way as I did Salo
A good parallel, at about the same time as the Video Nasty scare, come to think of it, was the tarring and feathering of heavy metal acts for encouraging satanic worship (remember backward masking?) and suicide...seems so banal and silly now...
If you think about it, The Bible has inspired more violence on a massive scale than any of the Clockwork Oranges, Natural Born Killers, or Grand Theft Autos of the world, combined. Easily. It's not even close.
What i love about you man, is that you are a horror lover who dosnt go DUDE CHEcK OUt thiZ FILM IZ SICK AND SHIT, youd say something, Watch this film, it is quite a refreshing and interesting gives me a serious new perspective on the world of these issues. Its quite something, my boy.
I feel like violence in movies is just losing its effect. Maybe I've just become desensitized to horror and violence, but it seems a lot of it has just lost it's shock by now.
@AyeAyes I guess that's why the more extreme films are so popular. I'd say try to see 'A Serbian Film' and see what it does for you. It's quite an experience
Possibly but I think in the same way as nightmares do rather than in a psychological way. Devil Dolls seem to resonate in young minds and indeed in the childish part of the adult mind. I would not be inclined to relate that kind of scare or fear with the kind of damage that goes to a deeper level, the kind that manifests itself in behaviour, I think they are very different things and the latter is more likely caused by real elements in a persons life.
Are violent movies harmful?! I guess it differs from people to people. I'm 27 years old, and had the luck to start watching them intensely at 5 years old... And i'm okay.
What I don't get it is why people labled certain films as video nasties. I mean they're basically displaying what are the most violent movies to watch for anyone to see. Now people will know what they're called and what they're about.
the other thing I wanted to say about this was that we do watch those over the top films as perhaps a way of running the gauntlet - can we stomach it, or we bold enough - curiousity as you stated, what's all the hype about? I believe the media always inflates interest with its flapping arms approach and its obsession with being the social guardian and spokesperson for everyone's tastes. Which is why I don't buy newspapers. They can 'bog off'! I like Horror also for many reasons...so be it!
Great opinion, Glenn! I reckon to some people that horror films are harmful. Like look at that kid who bashed that kid and referenced A Clockwork Orange in the court case.
I think it's safe to say(excuse the pun) that more violence has been committed in the name of religion than anything else! I wonder how many deaths have been attributed to the koran for instance?. Am i allowed to say that? Oh shit i feel a fatwa coming on!!!
Good point about books, 'Mein Kampf' springs to mind........or perhaps 'Moa's' little red book or the works of Markes and Engles........more deaths can be attributed to these than any film will/could ever be blamed for.
Unless 'La Fin Absolue du Monde' gets general release!!! ;-)
I've often had trouble putting words to my personal fascination with horror and grim aspects we face in movies. Thanks Glenn for connecting the dots for me a bit more. :)
No problem. It was a very quick response so it's a bit shallow as the argument goes.
I just pulled up a guy who decided that horror fans were just 'weird' for liking these films.
It's not a simple thing to articulate why we like horror without some prude suddenly accusing you of being some kind of nut case simply because of the subject matter. I guess that's to be expected
Well thankfully you get your space to ARTICULATE your point rather than it being a two person audio deabte. On this subject matter, it can just turn out to be a shouting match without any constructive side to it. And you're right, there is indeed something more deep, socially relevant in some of these films but stating THAT in the constantly heated debate about violence in films, TV, games... that would just be shot down. A bit of sad truth but truth nonetheless.
I had to do a school project on violent media and its effects on the populous. Violent films are always used as a scapegoat, and from my research, there is no actual evidence that it taints people. Rather outdated thought process. I have to justify my love for horror films a lot too - I personally like horror because they are so diverse. They can be incredible restrained and subtle or over the top and crazed. Plus, I just love them, indescribably. Great rant video man.
Its an age old argument put forward by those who don't know what these films are about. The girl I did this for isn't a fan of these movies but she is a very smart cookie so hopefully this will be useful for her video as a response.
As far as I am aware, there has been no direct correlation between screen violence and real life violence...it just seems that screen violence has become an easy answer and an unjust scapegoat...I watched many nasties back in the day and not once wanted to run after someone with a chainsaw or shamble after someone and eat them!!!
to comicspaul: likewise, I became very interested in Horror as an overall genre after my Dad allowed me to watch Halloween aged 10. In regards to the content, the violence is in almost all cases fictionalised and therefore suspension of disbelief is often a pre-requisite....you either accept that in all mediums - not just Horror, but dramas like Casualty in the UK, or even the Bill, shows that attempt to mirror real life events - but are NEVER real. I think it aso depends on the psychology of ..
...the person initially - are they, as would be in most cases, mentally unstable when they committed their crimes in the first place, irregardless if they watched violent movies Horror or otherwise...I suppose Scorsese is never violent yet his movies are revered the world over...the whole arguement over what is acceptable in Media still bangs on today, despite how many obviously articuate and law-abiding citizens - like us - regular 'folk' seem to enjoy them. Good artical and fantastic channel!
You make some good comments, Rapt4...I recently heard something but I cant place where I heard it...just mentioned that there were plenty of violent crimes before the advent of video or even before movies and TV...violence is part of the human experience...no use trying to deny it
@comicspaul but why tempt the devil? its waving a red flag at some ppl perhaps? if, if if if, we know less about the human mind than we know, so if someone commits a stupid serial spree murder we have to look for understanding and when we run out we are left with............
My favourite scene in Serial Mom is when Chip, the family son and seasoned gorehound, discovers a dead body in real life. One might think that he would be stoked to see carnage up close and personal, but when he sees the body he screams and cries like a baby. Real life sitautions are different from the movies.
Hm yes , I think personally you can't have a solid answer to what makes us provoked to watch horror or gruesome movies. Although a very good answer is curiosity. I remember in the '70 when a movie like The Excorsist appeared whole the freakin' country was shocked. (Here In Belgium tho) Never before have we seen such a repulsive movie. As well as Cannibal Holocaust. Much people are tempted by all the tags the film wears. Same counts in games GTA was almost banned for it's violence. Nice video 5/5
My argument has always been that if you saw a cat food advert, you wouldn;t go out and buy a can if you didn;t own one would you? So we are obviously not that influenced by what we see. Otherwise our houses would be full of useless stuff we didn't want, which we'd bought just because there was an advert for it.
The pro-censorship lot repeatedly conflate correlation with causality. Violent people may be drawn to violent media, but that does not mean it was the root cause of their behavior.
Yay! Violence!
