  • Truly what you call a legend ...great musicians project boom their sound .....heres a perfect example

  • yes gr8

  • I dunno this ain't that special. Not that impressive or innovative.

  • Hi. What is the song´s name?

  • @BlackAlbaWolf It's "Southbound Train" and it's on the first Leslie West solo album CALLED "Mountain."

  • The Lord has to Play A Les Paul Jr! Talk about God Tone!

  • That echo work is tough..

  • If you didn't have Mountain growing up, you should have eaten your Wheaties.

  • great song !!! check my channel for a true heavy metal blues from mountain

  • Leslie looks like Andre the giant here.....amazing guitar tone..love it!!!!!

  • Seth Rogen could play Leslie West if they ever plan some hard rock movie or something

  • I watched a Woodstock movie and they dident mention mountain one time? That's BS! Them and Santana were the shit at Woodstock

  • Leslie West: Stage presence for days, talent for days, tone for days, sustain for days.......a legend forever. He and Corky Laing were at Orange Blossom Junction in Exeter just about a year ago. They STILL got it!!!!

  • He would tie with Hendrix for greatest Rock Guitarist of all time!

  • Mountain Rules! Leslie West is a rock god!

  • at the same time the 99% of the audience were having sex :)

  • wow, good stuff!

  • Today the fucking narcicism is killing the media art. i don;t care if Leslie West is fat or not. He has always gotten a high sense of rocker personality. Mountain caught attention because of high quality into the history of hard rock not because its performers were cute. Janis Joplin was not cute, but her harsh feeling was what really made her big, she was authentic. Leslie west is authentic and that's what it is necessary to rescue to come back to get quality and not cartoon rock stars.

  • Leslie West has forgotten more about "stage presence:" than most people will ever know. Just because he doesn't jump around like a flea on a hot brick does not mean he doesn't OWN THE STAGE!!! THE MAN IS A GUITAR GOD!!! "nuff said.

  • Listen to that sustain!

  • This man truly WAS a Mountain. Huge guy, huge tone, huge voice.

  • i got on my channel a great song from album mystic fire 2002

'' better off with the blues ''

  • thanks for showing this, didn't know they were there

  • How could you not think this is totally awesome ?

  • Very Ugly

  • He looks like he's trying to pinch out a huge shit log. That P90 really cuts through the bullshit.

  • My friends gave me shit about Mountain and Grand Funk. They were and still are wrong. If you don't get it go troll elsewhere. Leslie recently said they found the footage of Mountain at woodstock and are hoping to release it.

  • i was at woodstock, but i'd never had heard of mountain, stoned to the bone and these guys knocked my dick in the dirt. just sayn.

  • Great tone. I loved Mountain but I could never get over the fact that Leslie looked so much like my Italian grandmother ;)

  • Rock n' Roll is not pretty... Leslie is certainly mesmerizing with his guitar playing, the fringe and the jew-fro. : )

Anyone notice how much fringe was worn at Woodstock???

  • WTF, Mountain played in Woodstock 69? They should have put this in the documentary movie.

  • @santanaincubus And along with Johnny Winter they should've but instead CS&N, John Sebastian and Shananah made the cut.

  • You tell'em, Depper. It gets no fuckin' better than this, at Woodstock or anywhere else!

  • One of the great guitar heros of all time!!!!

  • Leslie West didnt know the meaning of mellow!...both him & Jesse"The Body"!...what a Great looking les paul jr that he's playin'!

  • Leslie West is still rockin at age 65

    watch?v=TMtKYB_7AAM

  • saw them in Murfreesboro, TN in 1974 Awesome concert!

  • Without a doubt the definitive band on thatweekend bill!

  • I saw them in 1970 at Stonybrook on LI. The backup band was the Allman Brothers, who blew them off the stage. No one knew, I still enjoy Mountain a lot but that was a famous concert mismatch. LEslie West just put out a fine album a couple of years ago.

  • hay i say him in 2003 and he was running all over he is the best hands down .. dont hate on the best

  • Great band--somewhat overlooked I think not only as a woodstock band but in general. Great sound.

  • West, one of my favorite all time blues players and rockers.Very recognizable sound.

  • Very cool song.. killer tone and feel ... at around 47 sec it looks like Leslie is bitchin at the bass player who I assume is Felix Pappilardi (R.I.P.).. Leslie prods him to "come on" but to me it sounds like Felix is keeping up just fine

  • mamma cass with a sex change....maybe ??/great playing regardless

  • Yes Alex, he was missing a tooth. He got dental implants in later years for a "purty" mouth. dgmd2280, Hendrix was indeed quoted as saying he wished he could play as well as Leslie. They jammed together often. Leslie was in awe of Jimmi. Jimmi was in awe of Leslie, simply put.

  • he is good but Hendrix and Johnny Winter are still better IMHO

  • @StarfireEKS Hendrix gave God his pass to Rock n Roll Heaven, but to be honest, johnny winter sounded ORDINARY on guitar compared to Leslie West. Leslie BLED tone & vibrato, JW was no comparison.

  • No room in the film for these monsters? Gimme a freakin' freak!

  • @obbor4 I saw an interview of Leslie and he said..There part in the film was destroyed..And it wasn't until just recently that Eddie Kramer found some more footage...They had the soundtrack and added it...

  • This *is* stage presence. This is how it was done back then. He's one of the guys who came up with this particular guitar tone. It's didn't exist before this era. Basically they were mostly concerned with music and it was *all* about music. The groups were about a small handful of guys making music, period. You went to the show or bought the record just to feel the groove. They would wear certain groovy clothing; that was about it for the spectacle. Most of the lazers and fireworks came later.

  • Rumor has it that Hendrix was heard talking back stage saying he wished he was as good a player as Leslie West. Man listen to that tone!!! I just picked my up a 1954

LPJ . Needs a lot of work but gonna get that P - 90 screamin!

  • Rumor has it thatHendrix was heard talking back stage saying he wished he was as good a player as Leslie West. Man listen to that tone!!! I just picked my up a 1954

LPJ . Needs a lot of work but gonna get that P - 90 screamin!

  • @ 1:48 is he missing a tooth?

  • 5 stars.

  • sick guitar, just awesome.

  • Wow!! Leslie boy hi is best!

  • please, what's the title track ?

  • I knew a guy who worked at a guitar store and said he saw him at a club in the early seventies and called him a fat ass! haha he said Leslie looked over and yelled at them hahaha!

  • So Cool Baby > I own 1956 Lesp Paul Jr, too ! - Amen

Its Plays Like metled Butter ... I Personally saw Mountain @ Summer 1981

Beaumont Texas > Fair Grounds >> The Drummer was Giving Leslie some SHIT >> So Leslie Cussed Him out Real Goood On stage on the P/A

Love Scott A Harrison - Guitar Player,

  • One of my top favorite bands of the late '60's early '70's. I had the distinct pleasure of hearing Mountain at the Fillmore East. It was the Nantucket Sleighride album tour. They burned the house down! Stacks of Sunn amps and a small venue made for a great sound. they were awesome. Youtube is great for these older videos.

  • can you believe how long he holds that effin note @ 1:40, and he pulls it off

  • @yaymzzz Nice sustain from that Gibson Junior(?). I'm guessing through a stack or two of Marshall's.

  • Leslie used to play through a Sunn PA head, of all the things. He liked it because it was the first amp he'd played through that had seperate Gain & Volume controls.

  • These guys were one of the bands that didn't go for the movie or record deal so this stuff was never released for a few decades. Thank God for the internet & YT so we can now see the rest of these awesome bands perform at W.S.!

  • woah. Would give an arm and a leg to have been there. And my ears afterwards.

  • @Kejnao You'd need new ears afterwards: Things were freakin loud back then. I sat in the rear at t a J Giles show in Denver 'bout 1972. I looked over my shoulder to see who was shredding newspaper behind my head. Of course nobody was there- it was an eardrum coming loose.

  • !!! five stars! ...

  • Friggen great man......... Felixes EB1 sounds great too! RIP

  • How great would that be to have been there? 40 Years later aers still ringing!!!!!!

  • AWESOME BAND ......

  • BEST F'N TONE!!!

  • God Leslie can really pull the sound out of a guitar. Music today just blows! 1965 -1975 the golden years of rock.

  • Woodstock was only their 2nd or 3rd live appearance....

  • AWESOME!

  • Somebody can tell me the title of this song? Tanks....

  • this was not in woodstock.

this was in bethel, ON woodstock

  • How did this performance get left on the cutting room floor in the editing of the Woodstock film? This some of the best footage of guitar playing during the entire festival! Oh well, I'm glad somebody found it and cleaned it up for all of us to see!

  • saying Les has no stage presence is ridiculous, he's the funniest guitar player/frontman in rock history

  • FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELIX!

  • What kind of a stupid statement is that? Maybe he wasn't "pretty" enough for you huh!

Most of his reviews used the term "electrifing stage presence" and they wern't kidding. He is a f***** legend among guitar players and is considered one of the most underrated players ever.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA... HAHAHAHAHA

Paul???... Leslie West, no stage presence!?!?!?

If Leslie West presented any more "stage presence" he would of fallen right of the stage!! Thats 300+lbs of Rock n Fucken Roll dude WAKE UP!

  • @depper i think Paul is deaf and sadly half to 3/4 of his brain is missing its cells.

  • @depper Stage Presence...He filled up the whole stage.

  • @depper I just found your ass stupid comment, are you as famous as Leslie I don't think so with those idiots comments I think you are just a jealous stupid fool thats all.HAHA SHIT .

You better pray for him, cause he's very sick right now that if you have a soul..hudent

  • @hudent Ok. Maybe you need to read what I wrote, and the comment I was replying to. At least 29 others understood what I was saying.

As for Leslie's health right now, thank God he is recovering nicely. It was extremely sad and I was deeply affected, since my father went through the same exact thing Leslie is going thru now. All the love and prayers I have have been going to Leslie West and the Weinstein (West) family.

  • @depper stage presence is for prince and other shits!

  • @depper ya don't need to be a "pretty boy" when you can jam like that my friend..

  • @depper FUCK YEA damn his sound alone is enough to burn the stage down!!!!!man dont have to move he sound like that.

  • .. oh, and your other idea about Leslie going nowhere fast? Wrong again there Captain Obvious.

Leslie is STILL making millions with his own Limited Edition Signature Dean guitar, custom Budda amps, Guitar Hero III (1st $1 BILLION video game ever sold), and tours with Joe Satriani and other legends.

You gotta learn before you open your lips and look stupid.

  • I must've been very sick, or taken too much sleeping pills, you're RIGHT there,

    I stand corrected.

Damned! I shouldn't yap my fingers off,

    Oh whell...we all make mistakes.

    Sweet Peace In Time ♫

  • Leslie West the 300 lb guitar superman

  • Saw L.W. at his fattest Redondo Beach, CA '88. Concert was just unbelievably good. Leslie @ every bit of 400 lbs had a stage hand help him onto/prop a bar stool under him. His Les Paul looked like a ukulele.

Flash 2000 Houston, TX and he was about 185 lbs. Amazing, I didn't recognize him. Did recognize the tunes. Saw him last year 4 Nov and the majik is still there. He gained a tad but why I am I fixated on Leslie West's size? He jammed like we used to. Got me thru last 40. Flowers of Evil!!!

  • 0:43-0:48

The fright look to the band. The shout: C'mom!!!!

  • lmao. that was awsome.

    dont dissapoint the mountainman

or u be messin' with sasquatch.

  • Youtube, Rockband, and Guitar Hero have REALLY catapulted Leslie West and Mountain back into the music limelight. Signature Dean Guitars, Budda Amps, and Fret12 DVD chronicling Leslie's amazing life and talent.

Check the Great Fatsbies' Leslie West/Mountain Fan Site greatfatsbies~dot~com.

  • hes actually not that big only 5 10 i think and chunky.....but its just how he presents himself on stage

  • Yes. Leslie West was "born" with stage presence. Spoken about very little by fans, but fellow musicians know it very well.

Joe Satriani in fact talks about this in Mountain's new DVD.

No question when Leslie's onstage, who is Boss. And he does it without running and hopping around onstage. Or these "power stances" of today that makes the guitarist look like someone shoved a maple tree up their ass.

  • boy someone said he looks like "Andre the Giant" the wrestler of the 80's yeah here he is Andre.... he looks great nowadays lost weight & he is in better shape than ever..

  • Leslie liked the simplicity of the LP Junior. One P90 pickup with only volume and tone. He played through a Sunn Coliseum PA head in a microphone jack. You jam the mic volume up as a preamp and then control the overall volume with the master volume. He was actually ahead of his time, by accident, at Woodstock. EVH for example uses guitars with just a straight volume control. Harmonics jump out a lot better without all the crap in the circuit.

  • hey thanks man, i've always wanted to know what les's rig was back then, i knew about the Sun amps but not the PA version with what sounds alot like a pre amp section, i wondered how he got such a dirty tone, i thought he must have used some kinda booster/fuzz box to get that amound of filth...man what a tone!!!

  • He has his own axe now too....

  • @MrJonnie7 that is why I love telecasters with P 90's, like my G and L ASAT.

  • sorry but i don't saw in woodstock's dvd?can you explain me the reason?thank for post this video!!

  • Check out the LONGER SONG...

One of the top songs recorded at the ORIGINAL Woodstock in my opinion. Vital to learn just how great the Les Paul Jrs were. No one controlled a JR like Leslie did.

Foolishly left off the movie or albums. The new 40 yr anniversary Woodstock DVD takes care of this miscarriage of justice!

  • Not "one" of the top songs... THE top song in my opinion.

  • What song is this?

  • southbound train...checkout the longer version, this tune is a belter...

  • Leslie rocks Mountain of a man!

  • What's the name of this song?

  • Comment removed

  • looks like little john from robin hood

  • You sound like a fucking putz.

  • u must be a descendant of the sheriff of Nottingham to hate robin hood so much

  • valeu grande bob

    mucho loco! puta sonzera!

  • if hendrix is god

    well,west is jesus

  • Leslie was one of Jimi's favorite guitarists.

lol, see Leslie try to wake Felix up right after the first verse...

they pick it up after that and start to hit the groove... 0:47

    "Come ON!!"

  • Do you mean to say that Jimi fathered Leslie, then? Who'd be Mary then? Janis Joplin I guess?

  • I read (GP mag?) that his amps were modded, the tube circuits totally hotwired to distort...didn't use a BMP as far as I know.

But, man, the way those basslines blaze like an Inferno on Long Red live....

  • Leslie has claimed that he didn't use a fuzzpedal.. but this sounds EXACTLY like my Little Big Muff fuzz. Spot on!

  • @Renhjarta : the dude is just FLOGGING the amp. That is where that fat fuzz sound comes from .

  • Wow! Ive discovered a new old band! Awesome!

  • uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu realy awesome!!!!!!

  • Fuzz to the max.

  • Leslie West is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. His style was and still is unique to this day. It's nice to see many of their live shows surfacing thanks to the bootleg community. It's ironic that Mountain and The Band never made it onto the Woodstock album yet their sets were definately in the top 5 if not the top 2.

  • Owen - You're dead on! Leslie was one of the big boys of true guitar tone. Listen to this cut. This predates all the more famous guys excepting Townsend, Hendrix, and a few others. This is f%&*ing great stuff.

  • BoS was on the Woodstock Two album as I remember?

Saw Mountain 2008 Houston, TX. Uploaded the Mississippi Queen jam (Cleofizoid was caught BS'n with Tee Shirt girl, so 1st few seconds missed). The bassist is crazy and Corky Laing is definitely crazy. Check it out, not great musicianship that nite necessarily but great interaction/fun tho'. Watch closely and you will see what I'm talking about.

Wish someone would post the live side of Flowers of Evil. Talking about the best Live jam ever...

  • really awesome!!

  • where is " Blood of the sun" ?? The studio version is great (I think the vocals were alot louder than the music, but then again this is leslie west). I remember the killer live at woodstock . I don't see it on YOUtube.. Where can I get iT??

  • I was looking for the same thing. You're right about it as it was a great performance. I think "Blood of the Sun" was one of the best songs performed at Woodstock. It certainly topped the list of most heaviest, along with Hendrix and I guess the Who. Actually I think the Who's performance of "We're Not Gonna Take It" was better at Woodstock than on the Tommy album.

  • However thanks to Mountain's successes on youtube, and the stunning successes West has had with Guitar Hero and Rock Band, the adoption of Long Red in the hip hop community, the 40+ years of touring, i believe the NEXT Woodstock release WILL have all Mountain videos left on them. This is GREAT NEWS for Mountain fans.

I hope the Woodstock powers that be, does not fail the rock n roll world again.

  • How did this NOT make the Woodstock film? I can think of a few acts that could have been left out in place of this. Same with Janis Joplin not being included.

  • Becaue Woodstock was only Mountain's third gig, they just were not taken seriously. They got the gig because Mountain had the same management as Hendrix. I believe Hendrix manager definitely held West back, personally, regardless if they got Mountain the gig. They should have insisted. Then, Mountain clips were "burned", accidentally of course.

  • Well, one thing's for sure: Mountain lived on past Hendrix.

  • entiendo a Escorsesse, como editor de esta película dejo a muchos fuera.... pero parece que no la pensó mucho.... mother'fuck.....

  • wow what a tone!!!

  • If you think that was a good tone, you should listen to the entire song here (cut/paste this into youtube search):

"Mountain - Woodstock - Southbound Train (Longer Version)"

  • Compared to today's standards the Les Paul Jr. was an inferior instrument. Give Leslie credit for making this baby sound monstrous!

  • Actually, Leslie called his Les Paul Jr "a tree with a microphone!" :)

  • Leslie West is a phenomenon, each successive note being as perfect as the preceding one, freeflowing and going somewhere.

  • Yes, he played with some amazing clarity and the sustain, even though he used a guitar Gibson marketed it as a bottom of the line model for the young beginning players.

It only shows it's the player that counts the most.

  • I always thought it comical that West played a "junior" - he makes it look like a uklelele!

  • @robertlaberge he never overplayed, his influeneces incl. cream and albert King. You can hear it.

  • Nice! Love watching this in HIGH QUALITY. Leslie is even scarier in HQ! Tyrannosaurus Rex had NOTHING on this dinosaur of Rock.
