to all people talking nonsense about the naginata being a woman's weapon.... its BS.
The Senkoku period battlefield were dominated by naginata and yari troops. before that samurai warfare consisted mostly of mounted archery. The katana or tachi only became the samurai's weapon of choose after the senkoku period in time of relative peace. its kinda sad history is so distorted
The naginata seems like such an elegant weapon. In old Japan wasn't it only used by women to defend their village while the men were out? I heard that from my sensei. Anyone else heart his?
It's not true. Naginata were used by women, when men were out, cause the men didn't usually carry the big naginata, when he go out he just took his daisho and left Naginata for battles, so his wife could use it.
Yeah, the Naginata were also an easier weapon to weild because it has such a long reach. It made it easier for a woman with little experience in weapons to defend herself from a man on horseback or one who was really experienced with a shorter weapon.
Yes it's true but it aint the whole truth. In the begining the naginata, togheter with the bow, was the markings of a Bushi. First Bow, then naginata, then sword. Later on, in the big civil war, the ritual battlefield more or less disapered and the naginata was left home withthe wife - except for the Shosei (Warior munks) that favored the weapon.
Don't forget the yari- First bow, then naginata, then yari, then katana. The katana didn't become the samurai's main weapon of choice until after the age of warfare, when armor was rarely worn. The katana was generally a poor choice for use against a fully armored opponent.
@kenjutsukata1o1 indeed and wy? katana cuts or slashes against armer you need spabbing clubbing or hacking the naginata however has alot more power and can thus be afective i would prefer a club or a yari though
Actually the naginata was a favored weapon of the warrior monks of the Hei temple during the heian era, Many samurai during the muramochi and genyoku and sengoku era also favored this weapon it wasnt until mid sengoku and early tokugawa era japan that the naginata shifte into being favored by japanese women.
there is a big difference between kendo and katori shinto ryu, kendo is just a sport and the katori shinto ryu is a fighting style, meant for killing and prevent being killed. kendo came from kenjutsu and, unlike kenjutsu, it is ineffective as a martial art.
you might want to take into account that the weapons used in Katori Shinto Ryu are based on heavy weapons, Kendo looks faster because they use shinai which is much lighter than a katana or boken.

Sohei (monks) favoured the naginata also from what I could tell in my laymen studies on the subject.

cant help my self, but... I have never done neither katori shintó ryu nor kendo, but kendo seems to me much faster than katori.

I love it! I did Kendo a while, and I see your point, even though I never really thought about it as a martial art. The moves are so graceful, too.

lighter weapon.
The kendo-shinai is made of bamboo sometimes even carbon fiber.
The boken used in KSTSR is made of oak.

Katori shinto ryu also has its own form of Bo-shuriken, not a heavy weapon at all.
