I don't know what it is, but I think one of the most powerful scenes in the movie was when Buffalo Bill starts yelling "Hey, don't you hurt my dog!", you can tell she's taken the one thing from him that he really cares for, and I may be nuts for thinking it, but I almost feel a bit sympathetic for him there.

It shows that there is a last piece of what makes us all human in him (which doesn't make up for any of his terrible crimes, but shows that he was probably once a victim, too, which has turned him into this monster).
