I was wearing a Japanese Flag adidas track jacket, and a lady asked me "are you Japanese?" I replied " no ,I'm cambodian", she said "aren't they all the same?"
I feel bad for that person. That person probably didn't realize how weird/ignorant that statement sounded. Perhaps the person was just thinking about liking Chinese food, which is Asian cuisine, and how he could stick that in as a related subject--not that he thinks Japanese and Chinese food are the same thing. I'm more disturbed that some people only think about China, Japan or Korea when there are more Asian countries.
ohh it happens to me alllll the time , I am a Japanese student!!! and ppl ask Is Chinesse HArd?>??? ALL THE TIME!!!!! Is weird they think chinese language and Japanese are totally the same T_T
@RusconiDom@LordBalto Also, woks aren't traditionally Japanese. Japanese cooking isn't KNOWN for using woks. If you wanted to use one in Japan, you COULD find one at the store easily. They're called 中華鍋 or "Chinese Pots." But, even if it was true, that both cultures had used them originally, that's like saying French and Italian cooking is similar because they both use knives. Are there similarities? Yes. Would a person of that nationality be insulted if you said they were the same? You bet.
@RusconiDom@LordBalto Balto, you always leave extremely detailed, very knowledgeable, often obscure comments, and they're always appreciated. This time though, not only are you using your knowledge to give another viewer a hard time about very minor points, but you're also wrong about the food, and the cultures. China and Japan have very different cultures, and very different food. To imagine that you'd be okay eating in Japan because you like Chinese food IS a ridiculous idea.
unfortunately, thats pretty common. when i was in tokyo, everyone assumed i ate sushi every single day. honto? sushi everyday? who even wants to do that.lol
@RusconiDom Actually, Americans do make all Mexican food. America, in case you haven't noticed, is divided into North America, Central America, and South America, Mexico being mostly in North America, hence their membership in the North American Free Trade Assoc. or NAFTA. Does this make you "insane"? Probably not. You do, however, need to learn to be a little less judgmental about your fellow man.
@RusconiDom You have to realize that, genetically, the Japanese are about 70% Northern Chinese, the rest being Eastern Indian and American Indian, and Japanese culture greatly resembles that of Tang Dynasty China. The real difference between the two cultures is the language. Despite many Chinese loan words in Japanese, it is a hitherto unclassified language, perhaps related to the languages of Southern India or of Siberia.
Lol that reminds me of some chick on Top Model. They went overseas to Japan and they had to eat Japanese food and she said "The food here is so weird. Back home I never ate Japanese food... except maybe Panda Express?"
I felt kind of sorry for her. She sounded really ignorant but it was funny at the same time.
Both cultures, Chinese and Japanese, have been known to use woks, so I don't think you can draw a sharp line between the two cooking traditions. In fact, I have an Indian frying pan that looks for all the world like a miniature wok. And the Koreans have their own version of sushi. Your friend may not have understood the difference between Japan and China, but he wasn't necessarily wrong about the similarities in food traditions.
I came back from Japan after living there two years, a relative comes up to me.... Relative: Man I saw all your pics from Japan! so.... tell me.... How were the korean girls!
@ShadowlessBeing I too have heard that "....all eat rice and have slanty eyes..." comment. What's sad is that ppl just don't want to bother educating themselves enough to know that there are differences between Asian countries or anyone outside of their circle. For starters, they are different countries. That's like saying a NYC person is the same as a someone from a small town in the Georgia. Ppl think that if they look the same & speak a language that sounds "chinese" they are the same.
When most people here in America refer to Asian people, they're really speaking of (what they believe are the only Asians) Chinese people, when in fact Asia consists of Korea, Russia, India, etc.
I suppose it stems from how our media and society portrays what being Asian is.
@bobbyjudo I've had that too. A man on a train platform asked me where I was from and I said America. He goes, "Los Angeles." Not even a question. I said, no, Virginia. He says, "Oh" and walks away.
@bobbyjudo yup. It was pretty funny. And embarrassing.
I guess it's because back in the day when I was a kid (early 90s), and still, Koreans were familiar with LA because of K-town. But some people didn't know LA was abbreviation for Los Angeles. Since it's foreign language, and "LA" and "Los Angeles" looks different visually and phonetically, some of my friends as well thought they were different places.
Well that doesn't surprise me at all. Here in Portugal there is a LOT of chinese convinience stores, once I said to a friend I was in Japan and he answer me "why are you there? Even the chinese don't want to be there". -.-'
yeah you hear that a lot sometimes =P ... ahh well ..
it's also funny when that sort of people go to china they insist, when they go out to eat, to order Chinese food with out realizing it's just called food there loooool
That's hilarious!! Sometimes I really wonder what are going through people's heads and then I stop myself and realize there is not point.
A girl I knew once thought that Honking was the capitol of China and when I gave her a "you're kidding right?" look she said she hasn't been outside of Vancouver, Canada and I was like no joke, but people don't necessarily have to get outside their country to read a little you know?
Great posts as always, I have just recently subscribed to your videos :)
