  • Waaaaa, :-( I want a dulcimer. And to know how to play it.

  • Wow he made that look incredibly easy.

  • Wow! And I'm fortunate enough to live close to be able to start seeing Stephen play and looking to start taking lessons.

He is an amazing player and an exceptional person.

  • Thank you. So many variations. Lots to learn.

  • @apiarygirl---- Thoughts between the " Dulcimer " and " Woodrow " ?

Thinkin about gettin one or the other!

  • I have made my own dulcimer and a friend has just fitted planetary gears instead of the plain pegs that kept coming lose. Just need to learn how to play it. Love this.

  • @LILYRULEZZ POST IT!!!

  • I JUST GOT A DULCIMER I CANT WAIT TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY IT

  • How many strings does a dulcimer have, is it hard to play (I play other instruments), where can I find a dulcimer and lessons for it, how much noise can it make and what's it's notation length? Lots of questions but I just saw one on T.V. a minute ago so I know nothing about it.

  • Amazing! I play a little bit but it sounds nothing near this! I loved it:D

  • What a wonderful American instrument...on ya US of A!!!

  • Beautiful......

  • Pretty.

Always thought of buying a mountain dulcimer and leaving it near the front door until my lazy butt finally picked it up and started playing - playing anything! (same actually goes for the harmonica.)

Almost age 51 and I'm still procrastinating. If I don't want to play, why do I never stop thinking about it?!

    Ugh.

  • @emeraldandsapphire Try going to a dulcimer camp, like the Swannanoa Gathering near Asheville, or Augusta, Common Ground on the Hill, Clifftop...even a weekend workshop can really inspire you! I didn't pick up mine for most of my adult life, now I'm really playing it!

  • Well played, Stephen! Thank you.

  • AWWW pick it... mighty fine!

  • its either D - A - D or D - A - A. appalachian dulcimers have three strings generally

  • great job on the dulcimer!! love that one!!!

  • awesome job buddy!

  • Thank you for posting this. Youre playing is exceptional. I am considering building or buying a dulcimer myself. Can you please tell me what tunings are common with this instrument? I remember the one time I played a dulcimer I tuned it C-G-C-G. Is this a good tuning? What are the best tunings?

  • Encore! Encore! Exceptional skill and extremely entertaining. Thanks for sharing it. Now I got to check out more of your vids :)

  • three people don't like music

i'd be honored if you checked out some of my music and more honored if you subscribed me back :) thanks for the amazing vid i watch it daily

  • The only reason I know this instrument is because of the TV show the weekenders. It's pretty sad lol. Sounds great though.

  • i can play this on mando.... like it :)

  • very nice!!!

  • makes it look easy

  • Whiskey before breakfast has never been nearly as happy or light-hearted for me as this song sounds lol

  • What an awesome instrument :D

  • Man, I really like this. I have a dulcimer almost identical to yours with the 4 hearts. My Mom had it made by Orthey Dulcimers in Newport, Pa. and she gave it to me a few weeks ago when I was in Pennsylvania. I shipped it UPS to my home in New Mexico and despite getting extra insurance and spending hours carefully packing, they still managed to break it. :( Then they backed out on the insurance. :( I'm in the process of fixing it as I speak... Hope to play it soon. ;)

  • how do you tune your dulcimer?

  • How could this have 3 dislikes??

  • super great!!!!

  • Wonderful =)

    I like it ..

  • How does a dulcimer work? The frets aren't uniformly spaced like a guitar.

  • @acuity67 The fretting is diatonic rather than chromatic - in other words, you don't get all the "white" and "black" notes, so you have to retune and/or use a capo to play in different keys and scales. It's rather like a tin whistle only plays in one key, though the dulcimer is a bit more flexible.

Takes a bit of getting used to if you're coming from guitar, mandolin, etc., but for me, it's part of the dulcimer's charm.

  • Great fun to watch! My mom bought a mountain dulcimer years ago and, well, almost immediately lost interest :( I played her your performance of Blackberry Winter and I think she was amazed that a MD could even sound like that! Great work :)

  • Mighty Fine!

  • SO good played... love it.

  • @upyr1

It was NOT developed in the Appalachian Mountains but brought from Irish immigrants. Yet, it was a common instruments played by people in the Appalachian mountains, which can be contrasted to the hammar dulcimer.

  • @pleuto514 Gotta disagree with that, while many immigrants had similar instruments, these particular types of dulcimers were first created in the area around SW Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

  • ha..... I just realised that every time I see this video I write "father?"....

That comment is funny!!! ha but also awesome song!!! I really do like it....

why else would I be back.... :)

  • Very well done!! 73,Bill

  • I could listen to this all day.

  • father?

  • wow, this is so legit. great work! keepin it alive :)

  • ace

  • Hey, this is great. I just bought one of these at a Goodwill for less than $20. I was wondering what the tuning is on these. The instructions that it came with only say that there is no wrong way to play it, but I'm sure there's a wrong way to tune it.

  • Most common tuning is D-A-D

  • @ricwade77 Thank you!

  • SOOO goooood :o)

  • Wow, just WOW!!!!!!!!!

  • клёво

  • Damn amacing :o)

  • hehe,, yeah,,, it makes me wanna have some whiskey at early in the morning,

  • such steady hands

my gradfather used to build dulcimers with a floating fret board to allow the sound board increased volume

but I never heard one played this well, not overstated just right!

  • this is one of the best things on youtube

  • This was fun to listen to. :)

  • these things sound killer, its amazing how such a simple instrument can have such a awesome sound. peace

  • go ahead stephen!

  • Great!~

  • very cool stuff. i like this sound

  • Amazing playing! You offering lessons? ha

  • Oh wow, I didn't know you could use a capo on a dulcimer. Do you use a special kind of capo? thanks :D

  • @brittanyrosewatson BTW, the playing is awesome! :)

  • @bajones18 what?

  • @stephenseifert Sorry. Lame joke on the above "DAD" tuning comment. but anyway, you're playing is phenomenal, its a pleasure to watch your videos on my down time, thanks for posting em!

  • @stephenseifert

he means "I wish i'd be your son!"

Trust me, Eric the Racoon knows the truth!

  • XD I say two of these in my local music shop and I couldn't figure out how to hold them. Great playing.

  • Damn, you're good! There are so many beginner musicians, on every instrument, posting videos, it's always a pleasant surprise to find the good ones. :-)

  • Pure. Real. Right.

    Artful beauty.

  • I find dulcimer players in a sense that we are different from all the others. Thus not becoming an instrument of the stereotype. *coughs loudly* (BANJO! AHEM!)

    Stereotypical "Hillbilly"

9-11 God Beer Jesus and God Bless America!

Is that what people really think of people who play these instruments? Hell! I'm agnostic and my mom's from the Dominican Republic!

  • What a great instrument! I´ve never seen it so far. I´m gonna get one!

It was pleasure to listen to.

  • Love this! Okay, I'm taking my dulcimer off the wall and learning to play it like you!!

  • Want. Want want want.

  • I think this is officially my fav mountain dulcimer tune :D

  • Nice, Cheers

  • Most inspiring! When I get home my insteument's coming off the wall n onto my lap. Time to start practicing. If only it were as easy as it looks!! You are so good.

Stephen, I alway enjoy seeing you play. You are a great teacher as well.

I took a class under you and have some of your teaching materials. I recommend your book Join the Jam to every dulcimer player, that book and the finger picking book are by dulcimer bibles.

  • This totally made me happy to listen to this morning! I want to learn how to play one so bad!

  • that thing is awsome. cool. great. i love it and i want one.

  • whats the reason for the variation in the fret lengths? its all weird...

  • @askaninjafan

It's the whole point of the instrument. Its solfège

  • @EnsoBlues ahh, why thank you.

  • awesome!!!

  • thanks for all the info!-very well played!

  • Geez......I thought I was fairly decent on my mountain dulcimer until I saw this guy. I guess I better head back to the closet. :(

  • bravo!!!!!!!!

  • That's awesome, good job

  • This song is so great when you play it at this instrument. i mean its not the same as listen to a guitar, this sounds so beautiful :D. really want to get 1 of these but there a re hard to find in denmark :(. But still 5/5 stars from here :D

  • You can get them from Thomann, also in Denmark. THough, the quality is kinda crap. BUt what would you expect for 59€ ? :)

  • I got the big model (for 99 eur back then) and it's ok after you visit a guitar maker. Sorry for my switch now, neuen Steg anfertigen, Bünde abschleifen, klingt wie eine eins!

  • It still costs 99€ but with the repairs it was probably even more expensive than a normal good mountain dulcimer :)

  • Repairs were about 50 euro total. Not too bad. Where would you buy a normal good Dulcimer instead? I haven't found any offered in germany except some odd selfmade on ebay. I was thinking to import myself a mcspadden but that'll be around 300 eur probably more.

  • celtic minus star sells a good looking one in Germany for not too much money and so does folkfriends.

  • thx alot!

  • Never mind. I can send you the links if you want me to :)

  • Buy from thomann, they have cheap instruments from hungary, hora dulcimer. Quality is ok but you should visit a guitar maker for finetuning.

  • A-MA-ZING

  • GRAAAAACE

  • Great version of this old fiddle tune. What is the tuning? I noticed the capo, and have one, too, might like to see if I could get anywhere near what you, magically, do. Thanks for providing the video. I'll continue to watch for more in the futue.

  • nicly done you are very good i just got a 4 string mountin dulcimer stranges tuning C C C G...any advice for a beginer

  • If you want to teach it to you at your own I would recommend "You can teach yourself Dulcimer" from the Mel Bay Company.
