@acenace24 It's not just strictly glass that breaks all the time, it's plexiglass. And what else do you expect them to use? Stainless steel? Wood...... They want the fans to be able to actually see the game when they attend the games, and don't want the players to get killed when getting checked in to the boards/glass. So plexiglass is used, it's see through, extremely strong and flexible so getting hit in to it isn't as painful.

The glass is simply tempered glass - it is made to shatter like that. Tempered glass NEVER leaves huge glass shards or tiny glass splinters - it ALWAYS breaks into a million pieces!!!!

And tempered glass is REQUIRED at all NHL rinks - they do not use plexiglass anymore - plexiglass CAN leave large glass shards - tempered glass will not!!!

Its tempered glass, which has 2 layers of plastic on the outside and inside... when it shatters it dispells the energy throughout the entire glass so that it breaks in small pieces not huge ones that could cut off limbs

The glass is much more flexible, and it has some plastic on it, if you watch some of the unsportmanslike videos, the glass is bending like 40 degrees when a guy is trying to climb it, this shows how much more durable/flexible it is then plastic, making it ideal to put in a rink for people being hit and what not
