Good vid. Very helpful. Just picked up a nice used 4566 and field stripped a couple of times to get the hang of it, cleaned and lubed, etc. You have a couple of good points that will make it much smoother for me from here on out. Much appreciated. I own quite a few pistols but this is already one of my favorites. Great look and feel, one solid piece!
@DDDaammm 4506 is discontinued. Look into the FNH FNP-45 if you want a superior DA/SA .45 that can hold 14 rounds. The 4506 wasn't that great of a firearm. I owned a 4506 and the trigger was sloppy with other problems. S&W only made the 4506 for 11 years. Miami Vice made this firearm popular.
Good guide the button to release the lever is impossible to get out on 4506. When squeezing. Is the slide supposed to be pulled slightly back when squeezing or is it supposed to be flush?
Just wanted to say Thanks for posting these videos . I have owned my 4506 since 2001 . I purchased it from a Law Enforcement Officer who was upgrading . I think that he would like to have it back . It was in very good condition when I got it , but I did not know how to dis-assemble it correctly . It was getting very dirty . I watched all 3 of your videos , and took it apart completely to clean and check for wear . I noticed nothing unusual . Re-assembled , and now it is AWESOME . Thanks again.
Thanks for the video. Death to the airsoft pukes!! You have no idea how many damn videos I had to watch before I found one of an actual firearm. Arrghh..
@west3con It should not happen and if you look at the design you will see it is highly unlikely. As you rotate the safety downward there is a transfer pin that is is integrated into the safety that also rotates upward and out of line of the hammer. Take your slide off and watch the underside as you work the safety and you will see what I mean.
i own this exact model same color and everything i absolutely love this gun!!!.. it's never jammed on me ever.. and fairly simple to clean and maintane great vid man!!
@Temptation777 No. Frame is totally different. The 5906 is made to accomodate a double stack magazine, the 4506 uses single stack magazines, as such, magazine well is totally different. The rails for the slide on the 5906 frame are made to accomodate the 9mm slide and barrel, not a .45 slide and barrel.
i noticed you cycled the single action and double action, maybe i'm just special in the head but my 4506 does not seem to do this without ammunition in it. advice?
@EL3minutero - nah no more, that was when Smith and Wesson made real weapons! It was Denzel's gun in Training Day and Martin Lawrence's gun in Bad Boys. The 4506 was the most reliable 45ACP ever made by anyone. The only problem was it was massive, built like a tank, and hard to use for concealment. It was definitely a side holster carry piece but man they were accurate and reliable. They could feed magazines of empty cartridges.
Awesome videos man. I really want a 4506 or a 1006, but even for a used one the cheapest I've seen is high $600 to low $700 range. Awesome guns though. My dad's issue weapon was a 4506 many years ago when he was LEO. Great video.
my slide refuses to go past the 3 small levers near the hammer. i'm afraid to push too hard. should i use more pressure? they are all down but seem to be bumping the rear of the slide instead of going under.
use enough pressure that you can get the slide past. You are working against a fairly hefty spring so a decent amount of pressure is needed to press them.
@razor02097 this pistol looks very sturdy yet very smooth, im thinking of purchasing a .45, but i also like the colt 1911 a lot, how would you compare the s&w to the colt ?
Impressive, I found myself fumbling with both hands trying to pull back on the slide, I cant wait to try that. Nice control of the weapon. I went shooting with some friends a few winters back and it was snowing pretty hard, my 4506 kept misfiring because of the snow, it did not jam just wouldnt shoot. I am pretty sure it was because I used a good dose of PJ's stainless lube (grease), I thought it was supposed to be the best for lubing stainless steel. Now I just use Hoppes # 9, any thoughts.
quality hand guns should only be liberally lubed when they are stored. Then cleaned once out of storage. A common mistake is to over oil or grease the gun this leads to gumming up the works so to speak. Consult the owners manual to get the lubrication points of your pistol. On the 4506 I use 1 drop per slide rail then turn the slide so the drop runs down the rail. 1 drop on the barrel at the breech end and 1 drop at the muzzle end.
Taking down all the way like I did in the video it is best to clean all the parts when just wipe them down with an oiled rag. Too much oil in the frame can lead to oil in the holster and give a chance for dirt to collect faster. After all said and done I have an oiled rag I wipe the whole outside with then a microfiber to wipe off excess.
My step-father passed this pistol down to me. I went shooting with it last summer. Accurate and reliable, but it's got a good-sized kick, so be careful and grip that baby firm!
I had a lot of fun, but the worst part is hearing that .45 ACP ammo is hard to come by. WHAT?
If you go to S&W's website you'll see they have re-issues of their classic revolvers like the Model 29 .44mag.I just hope they will bring back the 4506.
Excellent Video! I bought my very first gun, a 4506, a number of months ago and am very happy with it. Just one question, is there a small cutout in the slide where the barrel enters/leaves when you strip it? I have it on mine and assume its so the barrel can be removed however I wanted to know if thats the case or if its just cracked/broken in that area. Please let me know, thank in advance!!!
Thank you very much for your reply to my question. I am now relieved to know that its not a crack or break but an actual manufacturer cutout so the barrel can come out easily. Thanks once again for this great vid!!!
thank you for this video. this is the first pistol that i own, even though i have the 4506-1, they are basicly the same gun. before i was intimidated to even try to field strip it because all i had was written instructions, but your video made it simple. THANKS!!!

There is a "V" shap cut out between the barrel cavity and the recoil spring housing on the slide.
These are pretty heafty guns I have shot +P out of it and no cracking or damage at all.
