It has been a while, I came back to hear you again. I don't know if nonmax was being sarcastic, but I was not raggin on you at all, I think you are great. It was good to hear this again.
And to answer a humble critism from paulandlesson it's the way you hold the pick that gives it that bright or tinny sound. Try curling your pointer finger and sitting the pick on the first joint not with the tip of your finger. I promise your tone will improve instantly. That aside, nice work.
Hi - really appreciate the advice - I've been flatpickin for about 18 months now and have recently realised what you've said about action is true. I'm playing the Martin less now and have switched to the lower action of a cheaper but good guitar. Now i'm saving up for a new Martin with low action. Will try the pick grip thing too. Geez I love this youtube thing - all the best nonmax - Josh.
Hi, Latchy77- at 52 seconds to about 56 can you tell me what the picking pattern with you right hand is. It doesn't say on the Tony DVD. It's the run that starts on the open g then goes up to the a then b on the same string then decends to the b on the second string. Like which ones and which direction are they picked and whic ones are hammer ons and pull offs?
Not sure buddy - I kinda just made up my own pattern. I've also been revising my technique fairly heavily to get a stronger picking action and it's changed the way I play a bit too. Keep pickin mate - sorry i wasn't more help.

Hey man, nice playing. I do however disagree with your suggestion that sound rules over action my friend. I have incredibly low action on my guitar, almost as low as Tony's and it sounds amazing and the fact that it's easier to play makes my playing smoother and cleaner. And I can play for six to eight hours at a time with little or no fatigue. So in short, action and playability doesn't mean you have to sacrifice tone
Fantastic!!! I'm studying this version from the Tony Rice DVD as well. Question: Is the action on your guitar pretty low? It sounds that way but I'm afraid to mess around with the setup on my custom made LoPrinzi because it might affect the sound quality.
Hi - thanks for the comments - honest truth is my Martin has very high action - It's got the highest action of just about any acoustic I've ever played. I have a low action Cort featured in Moonee Ponds Creek (on You Tube) for easier playing - sound rules over action everytime my friend. Just practice 'til yer fingers bleed!!
Outstanding!! I learned this piece many years ago, and you have inspired me to go back to it. Just a humble suggestion; play over the sound hole a bit more, maybe it is just the audio on the vid, but it sounds too bright. Again, no critism at all you are awesome!!
Hillbilly fingers!!!

For a couple hundred bucks (or less) a good luthier can lower the action for you. I had it done recently and it was like getting a brand new guitar.
