@aval1998 -- The early TV video was black and white because video cameras were really bulky and heavy in the 1960's -- especially the color cameras.

But most of the film footage and still shots were taken in color. And on the later Apollo landings they even had a color video camera.

Us kids who wanted instant grarification and to see it live on TV saw it in Black & White. But if you could wait till later when the film footage and pictures came out, you saw the real high-quality pictures.

@nesokretep good explanation about the cameras in the 1960's versus today's tiny CCD stuff. Think of all the bulky cameras in the spy satellites that Kodak helped design to withstand the rigors (thermodynamic changes, etc.) of extra-atmosphere space. Hardly anyone knows what technical challenges needed to be overcome. It was magnificent. The conspiracy theorists are really just a gaggle of Luddite freak-a-zoids.

The biggest "oh my gawd" moments are when some of them think things like computers and lasers must have come from alien technology because to them I guess it looks like all this stuff just appeared all of a sudden.

@BrucknerMotet -- When I was a kid in the 1960's I was reading Scientific American articles about how lasers work and plans on how to make one of the damned things with glass tubes, helium gas, & electrodes and a high voltage power supply.

(I was disappointed that my parents wouldn't spend the estimated $100 to get the materials. I recently read an article about that particular laser by people who built the thing. I guess they got the thing to work but it was a lot harder than it looked.)
