If he decides to play the ball near an opponent striker and it is taken cleanly by the striker then it should count. It should be the goalkeeper's fault.
this is nonsense. completely unsporting conduct which should have been carded. what was to happen against ireland shouldn't have suprised anyone after this.
Amazes me that a man being payed to commentate on a football match is unaware of the basic laws of the game. Henry knows its an offense too but then again so is hand ball.
@shintness yea its CALLED FOOTBALL , go look up history dumb americans create the worthless name of soccer. and you clearly know nothing about football. look up the rule its clearly a goal if the ball leaves the keeper's hand. so look who's the cunt now. come back with a better argument while you're at it
@Gooner14henry I doubt you'll see this but just to let you know that soccer stands for association football, the word was actually first used by an Englishman so before you judge the so called 'dumb Americans' try and realize that you're a dumb person as well, I'm English by the way I just don't want you being correct.
Not a goal. If they legalise such things, you'll see the strikers stalking the keeper everytime he wants to kick it. And pounce on the ball when the ball is in the air
@CharlieBorrows No-one is allowed in the box for a goal kick once the balls gone out of play but if it's in the keepers hands you are allowed in the box. Once the ball leaves the goalkeepers hands the ball is in play Henry also did this against Blackburn both goals should have counted.
How can say this is a goal? It didnt touch the ground nor did he give the keeper space! Might as well let them steal the ball and stand half a meter away as someone takes a corner!!
@Sloth55Chunk It's not necessary that the ball touches the ground for it to be active. It is similar to the keeper throwing the ball to a player and henry intercepting it before it bounces.
Also, the keeper has full right to wait for all player to leave the D, before he can start play.

I think the ref didn't allow it for sportsmanship.
If you think that should be a goal, you obviously don't know the laws of the game. "A goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball while in the act of bouncing it on the ground or tossing it in the air." This is within Law 12 of the FIFA laws of the game. The referee was correct to disallow the goal.
@Alrich93 You seem to be misinterpreting the law. It is saying that the goalkeeper IS considered to be in control of the ball throughout the entire process of bouncing the ball on the ground or tossing the ball in the air to punt it. Therefore, despite the fact that the goalkeeper is not physically touching the ball, he is still, by rule, in control of the ball and thus, he cannot be challenged in the manner that Henry challenged this goalkeeper. The referee absolutely got the call right.
@blingdog9 That is the law. NOW. At the time however, it wasn't. The rule was only introduced after this incident. But also, the ref doesn't know what he's doing, because, if you continue reading that law, Henry should receive a yellow card for unsportsmanly behaviour. But he didn't, because at the time of the game, it was legal. How do I know this? because I am a (newly) qualified referee, and this was one example we were given on the course of how to apply the law, despite it being wrong!
@proevomen90 Can you provide proof that the law has changed? Surely if what you are saying is true, it would be documented. I do not believe what Henry did was legal and I think the referee got the call right. Prove me wrong.
@RawrRawrRawr58 nah could you imagine how the game would be played man if you could do somethin like that evryone would try to do it and it would be just as dumb as when that dude did it it would fuck up the game
@RawrRawrRawr58 Not really. The rules actually state that "it is an offence for a player to prevent a goalkeeper from releasing the ball from his hands" and also that "a player must be penalised for playing in a dangerous manner if he kicks or
attempts to kick the ball when the goalkeeper is in the process of releasing

You guys are all dumb ......
It was a foul because
1. A goalkeeper kicking the ball from his hands is considered 1-movement and as we know when the ball is in the keepers hand he cannot be challenged.
2.Henry was inside the box, If the goalie has his hands on the ball inside the box, the player should be retreating.
However if henry had been outside the box it might have been ok, as the
1-movement rule isn't going to apply as a keeper can't handle outside the box..
