just ordered a 9800 and 3 sticks of 512 ram for my old computer because the last card finally died. got it for $45 off ebay and there is a year warranty. feels good to go back to 2004. its going to be better than ever
The radeon 9800 pro was way ahead of its time, as shown by the fact that it can still handle Crysis. My computer may have been from 2003, but the ancient 9800 and the 3 ghz p4 have never failed me, and I always laugh when my friend's newer computers start lagging or breaking. I wonder if It's time to do some overclocking soon...
The fact that this card actually does play the game (albeit bad FPS) does say something about how great this card was when it came out.. I used to have one. Gotta love 256-bit mem interface
Which one is better? The 512 MB Nvidia® GeForce G310 or this ATI radeon 9800 pro. I know the 512 MB Nvidia® GeForce G310 is quite standard, but ati radeon is much older if im right.
how much Vram do you have? I have a Radeon 9800pro 128MB card. the minimum spec is 9800pro 256MB. can I run this with 2gig's of Ram and an Athalon XP 2500?
God is ANGRY with the wicked EVERYDAY - Psalm 7:11 FEAR GOD AND DEPART FROM EVIL- Proverbs 3:7 REPENT OR PERISH- Luke 13:5 HELL FIRE BURNS FOREVER! REPENT NOW! hohoh.. well.. old agp card can play crysis.. that was good long time ago 2004 my friend have this one price rm1000 about $294 and play farcry at high quality and also doom 3 max graphic... but now.. 1st/3rd person shooter games require high specs..
I can't believe the game even runs let alone being able to play it. The 9800 Pro was way ahead of its time with 8 pixel pipes and a 256-bit memory interface. Especially if you had a 256MB card I'm not surprised if you can play a lot of new games.
@geeknproud2110 I can play up to L4D2 and the water render's like crap. MW1 and Assassin's Creed won't launch, they need's an Athalon 64 or a dual core, I'm limited to Athalon XP. and games that require SM2.0b(Fallout 3 mainly) and 3.0 and up won't run for me. so mainly Source games run. I just hope I can play Portal 2 on this card, or I will have to get a new machine, or get a HD4670 agp card. but then it will bottleneck my CPU.
this just gets to show you How good those ATI 9800 series was then, i remember my friend paid 450 pounds for the ATI 9800XT series fantasic card back in 2003 and yes it's still plays Games
What a waiste haha why even bother playing on shit gfx ,defeats the whole purpose of the game play like doom 3 or something old poor crysis being played like shit =(
It make no difference anyway, the 9800pro is too old and weak to fully use the agp bus bandwidth (2gb/s for agp x8). You won't get more performance with the pci-e version. Only time the bus will be a factor is if you use a recent card on the agp bus, like the agp version of the HD 3850.

if you like the framerate then you could rase by going to c:Program Files/Electronic Arts/Crytek/Crysis/Game/Config/lowspec.cfg (open it with word pad) and there where it says sys_spec_full=1 change the "1" to 2,3 or 4,depend on the spec you want
LOL fanboys will be fanboys... Anyway, for such an old videocard and considering that any recording app causes a considerable framerate hit, that little Radeon 9800 Pro is actually pushing that game along nicely.
I had one too. It was a really fast card for a long time. I didn't replace mine for 2 generations till the GeForce 7 series came out. Then I had a 7600GT.
Try turning down the resolution, and maybe some details. If you notice in this video, Shading is obviously not set high at all... If it were set to high, the game would be completely unplayable.
nice vid 9800s from ati were built with tech well ahead of there time and this is a test to that. If you want to hang on more id get an after market cooler and overclock it you've already gotten more out of it than it was intended why stop im sticking with my 3870 until the HD6xxx come out. Cheers
@BurningTruth YEah only problem with the 9800pro is that I'm limited to SM2.0 games. ME and Fallout3 need 2.0b and 3.0. but I'm glad I can play Crysis.

booo fucking hooo , and no they havnt , some games runs fcuking awful on the 4870x2 , evenm quake 4 dosnt like it too much , my 8800gt runs quake 4 better
You just fail. ATI just released the most powerfull graphics card in the planet right now. Beating the 9800 GX2+. 380 FPS on Devil May Cry 4 and 59 on Crysis everything on max so shut up.
Yes i'll always stick with Nvidia but this time... ATI just made something sick.
I have an old 2001 gateway and i got a new video card in 2004 was the Radeon 9800 128MB Pro and i got 1GB of RAM, 2.8GHz CPU and i have Crysis Demo graphics all low, wont let me go higher but have resolution at 1280x1024 and i have 0 lag runs smooth! the graphics to this game are amazing i cant wait for my new computer to come so i can play on high everything! !:)
Damn performance is pretty good on your card, If I still had mine I would try it out again... But I can somewhat do medium (for the beginning) and it drops...evga 8600GT... was sort of a mistake to get... although it overclocks very well, Well I'll wait until the prices of the 9600 drop soon or the 9800, It won't take long (look at the drops on the 8800GT, even the evga superclocked 8800GT, near the prices of what the 8600 was when I got it... lol
Ah the old Radeon 9800 Pro. Great card in its time. Like some others I had experienced overheating issues, but I fixed that with an aftermarket heat sink. Way better than the "competing" Geforce FX.
I'm not gonna bother looking it up but I'm pretty sure the 9800 Pro didn't come out until mid to late 2003. I remember quite specifically getting an original Radeon 8500 64MB in November 2001, the day they came out, so your memory's a bit off. The 9700 came out in 2002 and then then 9800 in 2003. God I'm such a nerd.
I used to have the 9800.. but it overheated some and it never lasted me. Now I have an EVGA 8600GT 256MB which I oc some, and I can run this on all high except for shadows at about 22FPS average. Very high about 15 FPS. But I loved my ATI, because Nvidia looks like crap with out anti-aliasing, ATI doesn't have that aliasing issue.
man the 9800 is a tough card. all the cards that has come out after it, all this time that has passed and you can STILL play games on it! Even if the settings ARE on low the fact that this card still works even now is pretty impressive. I have my old 9800xt put away cuz I dont wana throw it away since I thought it was a great card a few years ago. i should try overclocking it until it blows up! lol
that was my favorit card but now my favorit card is Geforce 8600gt =) but still the Radeon 9800 pro was good for playing crysis but you can't higher the Grafic on that card =/
I used to have that card, then it started fucking up, then I got a EVGA e-Geforce 8600GT 256MB, and soon I'm planning to either go to 9600GT or 9800...
Can you believe how much an ATI 9800 Pro 256MB costs anymore? mine was 128 mb and was given to me by a friend but... they cost like 200 bucks, you should just save up a little extra and get a nice 8800.
will crysis work on my pc then? 3ghz+ amd 64, 1gig ram, 9800 pro 128meg all on winxp. like is this really for real? cant believe it man. on hardware requirements it says u need a 256meg graphics card minimum???
I didnt even think this was possible, good one man.

this is an agp card, correct? because i know there is an pce-e version of the card and you neglected to mention wich this is
motosportjunkie 3 years ago
It make no difference anyway, the 9800pro is too old and weak to fully use the agp bus bandwidth (2gb/s for agp x8). You won't get more performance with the pci-e version. Only time the bus will be a factor is if you use a recent card on the agp bus, like the agp version of the HD 3850.

Ah the old Radeon 9800 Pro. Great card in its time. Like some others I had experienced overheating issues, but I fixed that with an aftermarket heat sink. Way better than the "competing" Geforce FX.

dude it does stand 9800pro i don't thin Geforces grafic cards are named Pro
mackan4764 3 years ago
in the first i though that this is geforce 9800gx 2 not an ati radeon 9800 .lol

I still have my 9800 pro since 2001 , running strong...
naboba 3 years ago

LoL That's amazing!
My 9800 lasted me 4 years :)
I'm not surprised the 9800 can render the graphics, it's just surprising that the fps are acceptably smooth!
I might consider trading in my nvidia 8800 xD

mackan4764 4 years ago
man the 9800 is a tough card. all the cards that has come out after it, all this time that has passed and you can STILL play games on it! Even if the settings ARE on low the fact that this card still works even now is pretty impressive. I have my old 9800xt put away cuz I dont wana throw it away since I thought it was a great card a few years ago. i should try overclocking it until it blows up! lol

Can you believe how much an ATI 9800 Pro 256MB costs anymore? mine was 128 mb and was given to me by a friend but... they cost like 200 bucks, you should just save up a little extra and get a nice 8800.
