  • i love Grand Funk ilove DETROIT!!!!!!!!!

  • Brings back memories of a damp basement packed with amps, drum kit, hardly any room to stand, two windows open about six feet off the ground, several hippie chicks standing in the corner getting high, and me and my two buddies rocking out tunes by GFR, Iron Butterfly, Moby Grape, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver... and MAN OH MAN do I sometimes long for those days, especially when I see the cell phone bills for my three kids, the morgage, dental bills, car payments, name brand clothes...FUCK!!

  • This is a real treasure... Great that this is preserved. AT one time Grand Funk WAS THE BAND ..... very cool

  • So you are telling me that Mel is only 17 in this video???

  • @sixstringbluesify Yep only 17, i watched an interview where mark farner confrimed this video to be from 1968

  • Farner's guitar is a Musicraft Messenger.

  • it's 1969

  • The greatest band in all the land......STILL!

  • i found this band on one of my dads reel to reel and I would play it on his Teac when he wasn't around, so, these guys got me through the 70's, and the stones too. Then when i got a little older, in my teens, I was into punk. I learned how to use a reel to reel trial and error, till I got GFR going.

  • awesome band :D

  • Jeeezus....where the hell is my black light! I don't give a rats ass if I'm pushing 50 anymore...the fucking posters are going back on the wall...I'm gonna get myself a bag of some good shit , then I'm gonna hit the street and shout "People lets stop the war!!!

  • One of my favorite songs of all time, it always makes me smile and picks me up when I'm down. I'm gettin' into the sun baby! woo!!

  • if you watched sesame street in the late eighties..... 60`s music will sound nastalgic because sesame street used alot of 60s rythems ........ this is how it for me.... lol ... i love blues now because of it..... anything with a big beat..... like SOME hip hop... as well as SOME drum and bass.....

  • I'd be surprised if the Red Hot Chili Peppers did not mention this band as a major influence. The hair , the voice, the style of the guitar play etc...I'm not saying this as a cut or a plug. Just an observation.

  • it seens ten years ago by yardbirds anyway great band

  • Check out the electic hook up on guitars!!!!! Glad thats gone!!! But thisong KICKS A..............

  • this is the coolest vid Ive ever fuckin seen,Farners guitar is just a barage of fuzzed out noise & the psych visuals r outasite!

  • Impossible to sit still listening to this great music! GFR put so much into their performances. They just went for it, gave their all. I miss those days. We had more freedom. Life was simpler without all the bull shit, people were much more real and soulful.

  • And they were 19/20 at the time this was shot?

  • @ClassicKKate Mel was 17 , Mark and Don were 19 ...Cool teenagers.

  • @En0ErUP Thanks for the info. Not your average :garage band" huh?

  • This performance alone should get em into the (bullshit) RRHof Fame. Love the Townsendesqe git slingin. I saw em at the Ludlow Garage in Jan of 70 and they kicked ass.

  • Does anyone know that they are only teenagers here ! AMAZING.

  • experience

    ELP

    for 3 man bands....

  • @stupididiot13 what about RUSH

  • @EyMeng after budgie...

  • Hey Green Day, this is how to rock. listen and learn.

  • Don't care what you label it...it still kacks ass

  • grand funk railroad the best

  • This song is how I feel everytime I have sex with my girlfriend.

  • My favorites.Since 1970.I're a young man.

  • Wow wonderful!

  • one of the coolest band around back then..love em

  • This is F#####G GREAT!!!!!

  • Now THIS is REAL MUSIC!

You kids can keep yer (c)rap and grunge.

    GFR FOREVER!!!!!!

  • The title of this vid is Get Down ..... The song is Into The Sun!

  • @zorozornes

    Right.

  • @zorozornes Not only is the song "Into the Sun", this is a 1970 performance

  • @Sbrownlee How do you know this is a 1970 show ?

  • @47tooter . Taping of this performance was January 16 1970 and done at a Grand Funk show at the 'Pirates World Amusement Park' theatre, in Dania, Florida. To answer your question, I know my Funk.

  • @Sbrownlee Also keep in mind this is an in studio a "lip synch performance" not an actual lve show as some commentors think. There are many moments throughout where what you hear isn't what you see......it's the studio recording.

  • @Sbrownlee IT may be a different version or the timing is off , but Grand Funk is really playing and singing here ,, They dont Lipsync and they are not faking..and this is not the studio recording from " ON TIME "

  • @Sbrownlee

Also keep in mind that browneye has never really listened to GFR because this is as "non-studio" as you can get!" Brownie, try listening to the studio version. Not lip synched at all, just bad video editing. Try to obtain the benefit of a clue! GFR Rules!!!!!

  • @Sbrownlee Thank you it is live. They are playing and the synch is off .

  • just where was this done someone said in florida? i dont really know guys

  • The animation is making me sick.

  • Tears of joy!!!!

  • So cool that this is here!

  • @mikedrud

Yea man, what a rare find!!

  • hello my friends love jour sound and songs

    big greeting

    atti.

    NOMINEE 2008

  • yeah mark and don were the best but no one is stating one of the best bass player Mel Schacher Hmmmm who the hell you all did the rythum and bass.....Go Mell . love them all actually..

  • ~F U C K * Y E A H~

  • Ultrakool: I think Farner is way beyond so so. Not truly great bet very, very solid. He sounds better alone than many two guitar bands. They are out there but you have to look for a better guitarist.

  • in a way, gf was the nirvana of their day. so-so guitarist, kick ass drummer and great songs that captivated the listening public, while infuriating musicians and critics everywhere. lol

  • wow.early on time!Unreal.Beautiful in every way..

  • I really wanna know, is this footage from 1968 or 1970, cuz I'm confused.

  • Nugent aint got shit on Farner!

  • selling GFR Live in Tokyo 1974 dvd. message me if interested.

  • Love this I even bought the video mondo dytona jts to get a good copy!!!

  • HOW Great is this??? Very !!

  • Cool video!Rock n Roll!!!

  • you know what would be better? the actual live performance.

  • Grandissimi !

  • However, it was done without the ridiculous 'special effects' that are, for whatever reasons, in this video.

  • I belive this was on PBS in 1969...yes?

  • I need this documentary.

  • I bought mine on EBay. VHS tape called Get Down Grand Funk.

    Should still be available.

  • This is what many people think Rock & Roll is all about. GFRxR was simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.

  • R I P The Great Buddy Holly.

Feb. 3, 1959 - The Day The Music Died.

  • @PackedFunk .....along with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper.

  • @PackedFunk Huh?

  • i have GFR live in tokyo japan 1974 dvd for sale. message me if interested.

  • Track list?

  • what do you mean "what would become grand funk" ?

  • Is this footage from 1968 or 1970? I'm confused.

  • Where can I buy the DVD (or the VHS lol)? It's not on amazon (I've checked).

  • I bought mine on EBay.

It's called Get Down Grand Funk & is copyright 1968. It is VHS tape.

  • Many Thanks.

  • fuck the rock and roll hall of fame Grand Funk is to good to be apart of them they are for the true fans only

  • Thanks for the video!!!

  • Great !

  • thanks!

I used to have this on VHS long time ago and up to now never seen on youtube. Much higher quality than my old poor VHS tape

  • Great Hard rock Heavy Psych band that acctually could cut it live

Much better than their later higher rated copy bands.

I need GFR "In Need" live photage

  • they r called "LEGENDS" ! ! ! xo|

  • Saw Grand Funk, way back in 1969 at the Fillmore East New York City. The headline band was Jethro Tull, Fat Mattress and Grand Funk Railroad, G.F.R.

first run at Fillmore and they stole the show even when the mike kept going off when atarting off on their first song. once they started that was it.

  • The Huffington Post just wrote an article about Grand Funk being blackballed by The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Go to their site & search:

How lame is The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame?

  • I want mark back in GFR, but he quit and then spent 2 years trashing Don and Mel in interviews (than admitted he was WRONG about Mel). They waited for him to return but he did not. They moved on. Still I think its time to reunite, Mark, Don and Mel!!!!!

  • I used to listen to Grand Funk Railroad a lot when I was younger. I forgot how good they were in the early days. This is incredible!

  • Farner is a rock god

  • Very few bands are in this category. Love Mels Bassplaying, Marks voice is better today than ever, and Brewer is a drummers drummer.

  • So sick!

  • Saw Grand Funk at Cobo in '71.

    what s fucking show.

    GET DOWN GRAND FUNK!

  • Turn amp up to 11 @ 6:19.

    Another GFRxR first.

  • GFR needs to fire the hacks that Don hired (The 3 guys from 38 Special/Bob Seger/Kiss...what a f'ng joke!) and apologize to the fans and MARK. Get back with Mark and go out for a final 20 date tour of the USA and then the RRHF will come calling.....

  • Amen to that Brother!

  • i completely agree with all the grand funk

fans...this early material is precious testament as to how incredibly bad ass this band was...this pre-getting closer work is simply amazing...we're an american band is what most people associate them with...it's just a dirty shame...even though that song is awesome in its own right...it's not even the tip of the iceberg compared to what they were capable of and what they had already achieved...long live the funk!

  • As an artist and creator that saw all levels of the playing field, Mark Farner's musical diversity is a matter of public record. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home" as one of the top ten classic songs of all time. Way to go Mark!!! Further proof this great American Band can not be ignored any longer!!!

  • I filled out the petition

The best damn concert I ever went to was Grand Funk Railroad

    They rule

  • fattdaddy3755, best comment ever about

GFR!!! God bless you and them!

  • How many signatures do they need to be in the hall of fame ?

(...) awsome video bro, thanks for posting it .

  • I wish I could surf upon a clip from: 1976 "Good Singin' Good Playin'" PRODUCED BY THE LATE GREAT FRANK ZAPPA. A GOOD PORTION OF ZAPPA'S MUSIC WAS A GFR SATIRE. HE LOVED MARK FARNER. this video is a treasure. thank you. 5 star

  • Hall of Fame thoughts: If GFRxR were devil worshipers, child molesters, drug addicts, Marxist Leninist Leftists, Black, Brown, gay, bi-sexual, losers, insane, or otherwise...they'd be in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame.

  • Therefore I say to you Jan Wenner.....

    WHAT THE FUCK???????????

Boycott Rolling Stone Magazine until justice is bestowed on Mark Farner, Mel and Don.

  • Boy isn't that the truth, these guys are way and I mean way overdue and the best stuff that they made, they don't even play on the radio ever, good example..........Paranoid (awesome song) never played, Are You Ready (another good tune that gets you going through the day)

  • what they play on the radio today is junk!.

  • @fattdaddy3755 if they are not in the hall of fame sumbody needs their ass kick!..u never had an ass kickin by three men till they kicked it...mark alone at his height singin and playin the way he did...not clapton, not hendrix..no 1!...agressive tight rythm and soulful singin not just moanin or talking and he worked the shit out the stage too..

  • who is the girl at 4:36 min's?

  • The Intro on this version of Into the Sun is like one of the most peaceful and moving tunes of all time. Laying down looking at the clouds!

GFR was just too cool... we played their albums in high school, and when we saw them live it was life-changing.

The GFR Tribute band or whatever they call it is sort of like Skynyrd or Thin Lizzy Tribute - thanks for keeping it going, but you won't ever touch these Legends - these Definers of the time.

Rock on, Mark Don and Mel!

    Love to you all, "Suzie"

  • Hell Yeahhhhhh!Must have been great knowing you were playing something completely new! What a band. The more i hear the more i get hooked on them/it.

    Greetings from Rockland Belgium

  • Where the hell did you get this ???? (rhetorical, I know ) This is friggin' amazing footage and nice sound, too...they were nobodys then, but this shows what they had goin' on. Next to The Beatles - best band of the 70's.

    I want this documentary !!!!

  • Wow !!! Old , simple and AMAZING

    Love GRF

    Cheers from Brazil

  • Me too☆

  • Zakk Wylde would have a hell of a time keepin up to this cat!!

  • omg! 1968!! yeah!!

  • Actually the books say this is January of 1970....just to let you know.

  • how about just commenting on this band and forget about the wannabees capice?!

you young gen are very privelidge to hear such talent and so much more from the 70s so listen up and learn!!!!!!!!!! savy?!!!

  • driffulpystoriousatorcal

  • Broet djo j'a ire mai scultacc pruemo.

    mia mal

  • google desaparece el axo despues del fin del time

  • Madonna haters love GFR

  • lol, go check out the madonna interview video with weird AL yank. Pretty funny. That's the only thing i enjoy about her. lol

  • exelente gracias por este memorable video muy pero muy bueno un gran saludo y un abrazo desde colombia a aquellos seguidores de la verdadera musica y la mejor!!!!50s 60s 70s mejores años del rock n roll!!!

  • Holly shit

  • i believe madonna should stick to what she obviously does well....licking jizz covered peep show booth floors clean with that foul mouth of hers and also doin cougar duty as needed for down on their luck pro jocks...i mean, what instrument does she play besides skin flute?

  • excelente banda compadre

  • Everyone don't forget to sign the petition listed above in this video description.

  • signed, and signed!

  • OMGosh, the memories from hearing these GFR tunes on YT. This band is long over due for induction to the RHF.

  • hof is a joke politics as usual

  • they had been fucking crazy god blessing thems , this music meaning freedom and creative, just three guys done music , woowooo

  • 1968! Every kid was learning how to play guitar, there was a band in every other garage.... man this country has lost its soul. sad.

  • FTW!!! Grand Funk are so good they deserve their own fucking hall of fame!!..YEAHHHHH!!!!

  • i think Madonna should explain to me why shes in the RRHOF and these guys aren't.

    i don't think she could.

  • I think you will never get any answer neither from Madonna nor from anybody who agreed to play the game of show-business under the rules set by a bunch of faggots who own and rule it. Grand Funk was never a band who accpted these rules completely. That is the reason they have been so to speak "forgotten" by show business... But not by the people who love them. Independently if they are in the RRHOF or not.

  • amen brother,madonna a no talent ahole

  • Britany Spears is Madonna with a 500 mile upgrade. They're both talentless skanks who produce a vile audible stench that some monosyllabics call music. I think NOT!!! On the other hand GFR rocks! I saw 'em on 12/18/70 at the Garden in NYC and that show is still with me. What energy! Whoooeeee!

  • Im guessing "On Time" wasn't released yet?

  • Wow, blew me away

  • out from nowhere the Funk-miesters appear and absolutely set a new standard of hard rock galore and with a no frills down right raw rock raw sound

  • thank you for this great clip. It took me back to the 7th grade. By the way, I believe this song is called, "Into The Sun".

    Thanks again

  • To me, three man bands define the essence of simplicity, talent(ablity), and rock(ability)...and the Funk is the essence of all three attributes. So behold this trio of Funkability!!!!

  • Rick Rubin must have been way into GF when he was a kid.

  • incredible .

  • I'm going to shoot my radio

nothing but crap comming out of it now

  • This song and a couple of others were also tied together with Iron Butterfly and billed as a Battle of the Bands that toured the Southern drive-in theater circuit back then. The backdrop behind Iron Butterfly was the same as Funk..so probably done in the same studio.

  • BELLISSIMO!!! When nowadays shit so-called "rock" will dissappeear this music will live forever and GFR are the best in this kind!

  • Music like this simply does not exist today...they worked hard, played hard, and wrote and sang from the heart. Nowadays it's all wannabe radio bullshit...no soul...no effort...no imagination. GFR WILL LIVE FOREVER!!!

  • ohh...if this performance doesnt do it..then nothing will....capice?!

  • the amps were local and positively a remarkable fluke; the messenger...mark had to make payments......and yet behold what they did on this equipment far surpasses the fluff of today!!!!

  • Mel, the man in black. TAking the bass to the highest form.

  • when i was playing bass as a teenager and playing Funk, Mel, of course would be the man, i wish he would of always wore black and with his hair and sideburns

  • packed, thnx!

  • This vid is relevant to Spring of 1969, the title of the Vhs is misleading the real history.

  • 01/01/09..This is the 40th anniversary year of the formation of Grand Funk Railroad! That's right. 40 years of getting "funked" by unequivically, the very best, the very essense, of rock & roll! No others sounded, sang, or performed like these 3 guys from Flint. We funkers already know that. It's the rest of the world that doesn't have a clue. So be it, it's their loss. Mark, Don, & Mel own the Hall of Fame by anyone who ever witnessed them live! The music never gets old! Grandfunkin' New Year!!

  • This song absolutely sets you up to ROCK OUT !! INTO THE SUN ...Yeah!

  • The only 19-year old in history that ever looked older than Mel Schacher was Geezer Butler (aptly named!)

Sometimes I wonder if he was born with facial hair? Never seen him where he didn't look younger than his age!

  • Always like them. There was a rumour they were part-financed by the US Govt. as an 'anti-drugs' band. Was this a false roumour?

  • Urban myth

  • Thanks.

  • never heard, funny enough Mel & Mark were hard pot smoking guys but all of them they hated hard drugs and surely they were against those death merchants

  • Thanks for replying :)

  • Everyone click the blue link above & sign our petition to induct Mark Farner & GFRxR into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

  • T.J.. Have a great Thanksgiving , rock yer nuts off and now...GO GET DRUNK!!! Respect from London...All the best .Mark..x

  • Many bands needed a gimmick to sell the people. Take Alice Cooper, if he didnt paint his face he probably wouldnt have been as popular, Kiss, The Who, they smashed there equipment up after a show. Marlyn Manson, hey lets look evil, that will sell. The flea from Chili Peppers who played in underpants. Mark Farner wore an Indian arm band. Im not taken away those other bands talents, just makin a point that GFR didnt need a gimmick. They simply Rocked!!!

  • I always thought this particular song MUST be influential in some way--the riffs are contagious!

I recently read a British reviewer (you ought to read them some time, they have some really interesting insights on American stuff) of the "On Time" album, who said some of Mark's guitar passages on "Into the Sun" were used on one of the Wishbone Ash albums!

Wishbone Ash, of course, a renowned guitar-driven band, somewhat like a British-version of the Allman Brothers.

  • The BADDEST, #1 ROCK BAND ON PLANET EARTH. CASE CLOSED. RIGHTEOUS! LONG LIVE OUR BOYS FROM FLINT, MICHIGAN U.S.A. - MARK DON & MEL, WE WILL NEVER FORGET THE MUSIC, THE MAGIC...

  • I am 56 years old now but i attended this concert back on July 9th 1971 at Shea Stadium in flushing Queens. It was one of the top things in my life...The West amps made the seats Vibrate......fricking unbelieveable. Humble Pie was the warm up Band...Grand Funk

will live forever!!! thanks for the post!!

Keep on Rocking Mark...we need a re -union tour!

  • ..super,,,

  • Excellant Packed, I'd listen to this song on the way to school. Getting stoned park in the back row at school and all the young dudes hoping in and get ripped before class...
