@alexselby97 I think Goku knew that SS3 is a lot like Kaio ken, it's a burst of power that takes an incredible toll on the body. Goku could have transformed, but he would be putting all his money up front into a short moment, instead of spreading it out. SS3's ability to retain energy is abysmal, it provides extreme power, but the body quickly becomes fatigued under that pressure. I think Goku withheld the transformation for the sake of Vegeta, but also because it wasn't tactically sound.
