  • So, I'm wondering if it's necessary to have quilt binding cut on the diagonal if you're just binding a straight edge quilt like this one. I know some of the binding tools are designed so that they can be cut that way, but I don't see that it's necessary for straight edges. (I use bias tape in clothes making, so I am familiar with working with it.)

  • @MEStephKJV It is totally not necessary. I only use bias binding if I am binding on a curve.

    Hope this helps.

  • @SarahMSQC Thanks! That was what I thought.

  • I love the quack in the intro. Thanks for a great tutorial. I appreciate the suggestions for the spray and the steam and the needle threader- oh and the great stitch! So much info!

  • @killer99ish hahaha, that quack makes us laugh!! Glad you like it too! Hope you have a great week.

  • thank you for the tip and will always be looking for more great tips and tricks in the future.

  • I love ALL your videos!! Thank you, you are so helpful ^_^ xo

  • And I just finished my very first proper binding :D Thank you ^_^

  • Great! Very Helpful!

  • Great tutorial. Now I'm off to bind my quilt.

  • That iron sounds like Darth Vader... :D LOvely video, thank You!!

  • Awesome video!! Exactly what I needed when I was ready to do my very first binding!! Thank you sooooo much!!!

  • @hillegass3 Yay! Great to hear!! Thanks for the comment!

  • I am new to quilting (the right way) and your videos make everything so clear and easy to understand. Thank you for all your time and effort.

  • thanks so much i have always have trouble with the corners so this helped alot!

  • You are so gracious and so talented and skilled. Thank you for sharing your creative abilities here.

  • Wow can't believe you use John James needles - i use them for leatherwork hand stitching. I love your videos and really want to make a quilt now - though i have no sewing machine which is a big problem - could any one suggest a strong sterdy one that does not cost a fortune? i live in the UK so brand may be an issue as we might not get certian brands here that you would get in US.

  • @datsgrlz4u Hi... I don't know if they sell Brother sewing machines in the UK however my friend that has been teaching 4H sewing etc for over 25 years loves the Brother SQ9050 Computerized Sewing & Quilting machine. It has all the different feet, walking foot, quilting foot, zipper .... too many to name along with a quilting guide. Double stitching & more too. Good luck.

  • Aprecio sinceramente su gentileza al permitirnos mediante sus videos, aprender de forma sencilla y practica, esta bella y milenaria tecnica. mil y mil gracias sra. Jenny

  • I'm a beginner quilter but have been sewing and doing many other crafts for over 20 years....I LOVE you're videos for the quilting tricks!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hi Love Love Love these mini lessons/videos ! This one Jenny you show us to fold over the beginning of our binding but not when we come back around to it. Do we just leave the end straight edge ? Guess I'm visual and needed to see it. Is there too much bulk ? Thank you soooooo much , going to try this very soon for myself , this would be fantastic and not have to keep the diagonal combining as I've been doing and coming up wrong sometimes !!! Yikes. thanks again.

  • Love the tutorial ... really made binding so much less of a mystery . I am so grateful that you have added closed captioning. On suggestion -- could the words show up nearer your head but not across your mouth so that as I am watching I would also be able to see what you are doing -- with the writing at the bottom it makes it difficult to see the demonstration -- Thanks for all the great lessons!!

  • that really helps, thanks!

  • You all do such a great job, thank you so much

  • Does this work the same way with a wider strip of material?

  • @cheer11leader I would think that it would.

  • so helpful!

  • @konnichihamary at our site. wwwdotmissouriquiltcodotcom

  • Thank you for your email reply. I will certainly look up the courses tou suggest. PS I have just finished a runner binding, thanks to you. It has given me the confidence to start another!

  • very informative , please can I have more videos?

  • @eileenb2 I have 2 courses out called Quilting Quickly 1 and Quilting Quickly 2. go to Sympoz dot com to find them.

  • I had the same question - PLEASE show what to do with the corners - when you turn the binding fabric to the back. You hand sew it , but how do you turn the corners and sew????

  • This tutorial was very helpful, however, could you please show how the corners appear and should lay on the back side? thanks.

  • love all of the tutoritals. wonderful. Please keep it up

  • brilliant tutorial. give me more please.

  • what is the quilt behind you? i want to make it in pink and brown

  • I started a baby quilt 2 years ago for my great niece and never finished it because I didn't know how to do the mitered corners. Now I understand! Thank you so much!

  • Got it now, brilliant thank you so much.

  • I love their tutorials. just wish I was closer to thr store

  • Hi Jenny, I love your tutorials. My biggest issue is binding. What do you do with the corners on the back when you hand stitch it...you didnt show that part...?

  • I have seen so many of your videos. They are extremely helpful for me as a new quilter. Thank you so much.

  • Thank you soooo much!! Heehee, I have almost made two quilts so far, but my first one for my third child turned out very novice! Ha! Now that I have seen this, I can finish the second quilt properly! :):)

  • THANKS YOU...I am in Germany now away for my favorite craft and fabric stores with an infant quilt to finish. As I am a somewhat middle level quilter, I had really no idea how I was going to bind this quilt without those pre made binding packs. LOL. Thanks a bunch.

  • I definitely learned a lot from this tutorial but question how you ended the machined part.

  • I have learned so much from your demos. The lady who teaches is extremely good. I feel like a quilter now.

  • Thanks very much for a wonderfully helpful demo. I'm new to quilting and this is exactly what I needed. :-)

  • Nice!

  • It seemed very simple but I still have questions maybe I am just stupid. Did you fold over the edge when you hand sewed the binding. I couldn't tell. If you did, did you just fold it or press it then sew it. I am terrified of binding but it would be nice to not have to pay someone to do it for me.

  • I was wondering which fabric line it is that is on the quilt behind you on this tutorial, i love the fabric

  • Wonderful easy clear instructions. Amazing - I want to get started straight away!!

  • this was fabulous, clear, precise and so helpful in reminding me how to put my binding on my quilt. Thanks so much Missouri Quilt Company.

  • I'm never buying pre-made binding again. This is so much easier, I get the colors (or patterns!) that I want, and it always turns out spectacular! Note: The corner trick works for corners that aren't 90 degrees, too. I just did a hex shaped wallhanging, and pulling the corner back so the strip met the edge of the quilt, then stitching over the fold, worked perfect there too! Thank you Thank you Thank you! I was going crazy trying to figure out how to do corners on my own.

  • As a new quilter, I'm absolutely loving all of your tutorials - they're so easy to follow, yet not too slow to loose my attention. :) I've watched 5 different videos on how to attach a binding and this one was hands down the best! You've got a new subscriber! :)

  • I was so excited after watching this video, I started binding and forgot to quilt, luckily it was just a mug rug. This binding technique is great - I am better at hand stitching than machine stitching so this was perfect. The binding looks great. Now I need to find a tutorial on machine quilting.

  • I'm sorry you didn't show what to do when you reach the corners.

  • @Britgirl58 you can see how to do the corners in Make a Baby Quilt - Part 4 -

  • Love these tutorials! I don't have time to go for classes with my busy work schedule. This is SO helpful!! Thank you!

  • You did not show us the corners :(

  • I love all the videos from the Missouri Quilt Co. I've been watching them over and over and have learned so much. But now it's time to put what I've learned into action and make a quilt. Thanks for the great videos. Keep them coming!

  • The best tutorial on binding that I have seen. Even better than my sister-in-law explaining in person!

  • looking for info on hand dying fabric. What type of fabric do u use?

  • It is almost as if you are right here in my sewing room. Your the best! thank you so much!

  • This is the easiest way I have seen anywhere. It has really helped me a lot.

    Thank you.

  • I have been wanting to learn how make binding easier for years. Thank you so much for a very easy to understand video. Now, for all those quilts that have been sitting in the closet for years with no binding !

  • I have seen this before and still Love it! It is so easy to do thisand it looks sooo good!!!! Thanks Jenny

  • The easiest tutorial yet! Thank you!

  • Great tutorial!! But what I really want to know is who designed that quilt behind you, and who is the fabric designer?? I love it!

  • @quiltycanuck ,

The quilt is designed by us using yardage. It is a nine -patch block paired with an hour glass block. The yardage is mostly Deb Strain. She has a new line out called Cherish Nature where she uses a lot of those same teals and browns! I am glad you like it. Thanks for your comments. Jenny

  • @jennydoan57 Thanks Jenny for the response! Could this quilt be made with precuts?

  • @quiltycanuck

The quilt can be made with precuts. We made a pattern called altered squares, using 2 layer cakes and cutting 1 layer cake into a four patch and 1 layer cake into an hour glass. It gives the same look and when you cut layer cakes, if you use the same number of seams they will come out the same size. You can see it on the blog...I think! You can also make a nine patch using a layer cake but you will end up trimming one block to be the same size as the other. Jenny

  • @jennydoan57 Thanks so much again Jenny, one last question..the yardage that you used for that top, what is the name of the line? I think I will buy some cherish Nature but I also like some of the prints in the quilt behind you as well.

Thanks so much again for your help!!

  • @quiltycanuck I think it is called daydreams.

  • Hi Nancat, I show the binding ends meeting on the tutorial using the binding tool and also the tutorial for the beginning quilting series! Check them out! and enjoy! Thanks for your comments, Jenny

  • I agree that you should have shown the corners folded out and why on earth didn't you show us how to join the binding ends where they meet?!

  • I really love your tutorials! I do have a question/comment though...it would have been really great to see how the corners came out and how you did them! That's what I think I'm going to have trouble with....any information would be greatly appreciated...keep those tutorials coming!!!

  • Oh my goodness, this was the best tutorial on binding ever! My first and only quilt was a doll quilt for my daughter that I made almost two years ago. It was sooo easy...til I got to the binding. Other tutorials were so confusing, I just never finished it, nor started another. This makes it look simple! Thanks so much for this video. Your others are great, too. I'm finishing that quilt this weekend!

  • me encantan estos videos pues me estimulan mucho, la verdad s que no entiendo el ingles, me gustaría como a muchos que los tradujeran para el deleite de muchos, gracias.

  • this was the BEST! Thank you for posting!

  • thank you thank you thank you! binding freaks me out and this looked so easy! I will def try it out on the three quilts I have to make within 2 months! my first quilts and I have bitten off a lot!

    thanks for your easy tutorials!!!

  • Hi Kat...

The only time you really have to cut your binding on the bias is when you are doing curves like scallops. I generally just straight cut my binding. I hope this helps!

  • Thank you Jenny, it sure helped.

    That's good news!

    Ü

  • Thank you for this tips. I am about to start the binding of my second quilting project. Your tutorial is great. Why does it have to be cut in the bias?

    God bless you!

  • Very well put together video, thanks! I did find one area in the tutorial, though, that was lacking instructions. I believe that the instructor should have mentioned that the strip of fabric for the binding should be cut on the bias (45 degree angle). Other than that, a truly wonderful video!

  • Really helpful - thanks so much!

  • Thanks for a very clearly explained tutorial. I am completing my first quilt for a new grandbaby and I am so insecure. Your video has made it doable. Thanks Mona C

  • Thank you for the excellent tutorial on bindings. I am a beginner and finally finished binding my first quilt block. Fine video!

  • awesome!
