Brian Dunning definitely does make some assumptions in a lot of his podcasts. I also agree that just because there was no listed program for female cosmonauts at the time doesn't mean that there were no women launched into space. This is based on my study of the Soviet Union. Brian Dunning's strength is teaching critical thinking, not necessarily getting all the facts. Which sounds bad, but listen to his podcasts - he's got a great radio voice. His podcasts are entertaining.
@Greenwickpress Absolutely. To put this subject to sleep, critical thinking is important, but the lack of soviet documents during the cold war does not mean the lack of soviet documents. The open Russia is still very very closed off.
@chestnui It definitely isn't a whole lot different. In Moscow things like bright and cheery, but the many provincial towns still seem to be moldering. And of course Putin and the like are holding power the way it has always been held. I hope one day they are truly open, but for now any word from the Russian government has to be fact checked thoroughly.
Though I don't assume that the Lost Cosmonaut tales are true, I found this presentation to be shoddy, sophomoric, ill informed and lacking in substance. To claim that the Ludmilla tape cannot be that of a female cosmonaut because there was no female cosmonaut program at the time is wildly speculative. The speaker's aw shucks "am I pronouncing this correctly" demeanor seems intended to excuse his surprising lack of knowledge about the best known LC cases, which he ignores.
